Jessie loved Ray, but he didn’t know it. All he probably thought of was a ranch hand, and that frustrated her to no end. She tried everything she could to get his attention, but his head was in the clouds due to his divorce from Donna. It was Donna’s loss, Jessie thought, she didn’t know what she had until it was too late. So Jessie spent all day trying to make Ray’s day easier, but none of her efforts seemed to pay off. So she tried and tried and tried to make herself look even more feminine, and sometimes she swore she saw Ray staring at her, but she wasn’t sure of herself.
Her friends Melinda and Sanda told her to go for it. Melinda advised her to play it forward, to let him know she liked him, but Sanda said to wait, that he should make the first move. Jessie was so confused, she didn’t know what to do. The Oil Baron’s Ball was coming up, and it was her dream to attend with Ray, who got invited because of his family. (JR didn’t want Ray to go, but Miss Ellie and Clayton insisted).
“Hey Jessie, how are you? What’s up with the sad face?” Ray asked as he pushed a barrow along beside her.
“Oh nothing. Just thinking.”
“About?” He smiled and Jessie could feel herself melt with those steely blue eyes staring at her.
“Oh nothing, girl stuff.”
“Like ponies and rainbows and all that?”
Jessie laughed in spite of herself. “Oh yeah, Ray, that’s all we girls think about.”
Ray laughed. “Hey, I don’t know about these things. I’m a guy, remember?”
“Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude.”
“You weren’t rude, you were cute…”
“I think I’m a little too old to be cute,” Jessie sighed.
“You’re right. How about beautiful?”
Jessie nearly tripped over the horse she was grooming. “Beautiful? Me?”
“Doesn ‘t anyone ever tell you that?”
“Well JR does, but we all know what he wants, so that doesn’t count.”.
The two of them laughed. “So, JR is moving in on my territory?”
“I didn ‘t realize I was your territory.”
“Oh, you know what I meant. I just thought that we had something going, because we work together every day.”
“Ray Krebbs, are you messing with me? Because If you are I don’t think I could take it. “
“You haven’t noticed the way I get tongue tied around you? The way I fall over myself trying to talk to you?”
“I thought you were just clumsy.”
Ray laughed. “That’s what I like about you, Jessie. You tell it how it is and you always make me laugh. Say, I just had a thought…”
“Oh yeah? “
“Yeah. You see the Oil Baron’s Ball is coming up and I don’t have a date, would you like to go with me?”
“You mean it?”
“I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t. Come on, you’ll be the most beautiful girl in the room.”
Jessie smiled. “I can see your brother JR having a fit with you bringing the help to the dance.”
“Who cares what JR thinks?”
“I don’t,” Jessie grinned.
And so the two went to the ball and Jessie had the time of her life. The best part was when Ray kissed her at the end of the night. She knew then that her life had changed, and it was worth the wait.
The end?
