prologue
Jessie was devastated. Gary had gone back to Abby for what seemed like the hundredth time, leaving her alone with their daughter Tiffany. Jessie could almost understand him walking out on her. She’d been after him to stay sober for years. But to walk away from their daughter was unforgivable. She needed her daddy. When he was there he was a wonderful daddy. There was no sign that Gary had started drinking again. It had totally caught Jessie off guard. The first thing she did when she found out he was leaving was change the locks. She cancelled their bank accounts. Maybe it was mean, but Jessie was just beating Gary to the punch. He was a powerful man and with Abby pulling the strings there was no telling what they would do. She knew Abby; if she got her way she would leave Jessie and Tiffany penniless.
Jessie went on a major shopping spree using Gary’s credit cards. She bought new outfits for herself and Tiffany, looking like a million bucks. They looked good and felt better, even though Jessie felt dead inside. But everywhere Jessie went reminded her of Gary. He was the one who had suggested moving to California for a fresh start even though she didn’t know anyone. This was his town, not hers. These were his friends. He was the one who loved this place, apparently a little too much. So she mailed him her keys and headed to the one place she and her daughter would be welcome- they went to Southfork.

“Jessie, Tiffany, always good to see you,” Miss Ellie held out her arms for her favorite daughter in law and her only grandchild. She had been thrilled when Gary had told her she was going to be a grandmother and was secretly even happier that it was her favorite son that was bringing the first grandchild into the Ewing fold. And everyone loved Jessie. Even Jock loved her when he was still with them. Tiffany was beautiful with blonde hair like her daddy and blue eyes like Jessie, and was loved by everyone. Maybe not everyone at first. Miss Ellie knew that Lucy was jealous of her and always made comments about her, especially the older she got. But Jock had spent extra time with Lucy to reassure her that she would always have a special place in the Ewing family. JR had seen that weakness and tried to goad Lucy into leaving Southfork, but Jock and Miss Ellie had put a stop to that as well.
As soon as Tiffany ran upstairs to her room, Jessie burst into tears.
“Jessie, what’s wrong? Have I said something to upset you? Is everything okay?” A concerned Miss Ellie asked.
Jessie shook her head. “No. I’m afraid not. It’s Gary…”
Miss Ellie covered her mouth. “Don’t tell me…”
“no, ma’am. I’m sorry to have worried you. He’s all right. He’s just the biggest jerk in the world. I would have rather have married JR than him that’s all.”
The Ewing matriarch looked at her with curiosity. “Now, now, Jessie, it can’t be all that bad. I know how you and JR feel about each other. What’s Gary gone and done this time?” she smiled.
“He’s left me and Tiffany.”
“What?”
“He left us. We’re no longer together.”
“Are you sure? Maybe he just went on vacation.”
Jessie tried not to smile. Miss Ellie had a kind heart and always saw the best in everyone, especially her middle son. “No Miss Ellie. He’s gone and taken up with another woman. He’s living with her now. He hasn’t seen Tiffany in almost two months.”
Miss Ellie covered her mouth and teared up. “What’s my boy done this time? Is he..”
“I don’t know if he’s drinking again. I wouldn’t be surprised if he was. That witch he’s with his a bad influence. She knew he was married and had a little girl and went after him anyways. She’s pure evil. She’s the female…”
Miss Ellie looked at her in surprise and knew exactly what she was thinking. They both laughed in spite of their dark conversation.
“Well then Jessie you did the right thing by bringing my granddaughter here. You and Tiffany will always have a place to stay. Jock would have been sorely disappointed in Gary’s behavior if he were still with us. I love my son but I don’t always understand him. But you are part of my family, you are like the daughter I never have. Please, tell me you and Tiffany will stay. I lost my husband, I lost my son Gary a long time ago, I couldn’t bear to lose you and my granddaughter.”
Jessie nodded. “Of course. Thank you for having me.”
They embraced, and Jessie was looking forward to the new chapter in her and her daughter’s lives.
