Hawkeye was lost, completely lost. He didn't know how this had happened, but what had started out on an innocent mission of mercy with his best friend BJ turned into a complete disaster. They'd been driving all day, and everything was starting to blur. One abandoned hut looked like the next in his expert opinion.
"What are you doing Beej? We can't stop now. There are people who need us. There are lives to be saved!" Hawkeye exclaimed, attempting to take over the wheel.
"The only thing worse than being lost is being lost in the dark. We need to pull over now and call it a night. We're not getting any reception on our radio's. We'll turn around in the morning and see what we can get. Going any further might put our lives in jeopardy," BJ explained.
"Oh, jeez Louise Beej, how did I let you talk me into this? I was perfectly content in the rat infested nest we call home."
"As I recall, we weren't exactly volunteers, it seems to me we were drafted."
"Remind me to thank Colonel Potter with the bottom of my boot," Hawkeye said dryly as he entered the hut.
"We might as well make the best of this. Dinner?"
Hawkeye nodded and BJ grabbed the canned food and some canned peaches for dessert. It went down quickly.
"So tell me, Beej, what's a guy do to kill a day in San Francisco?"
"Oh, you know, read the paper, enjoy a cup of coffee, mow the lawn, go to work, work on the car, play with the kid, if I'm lucky enjoy a little private time with the missus," replied the fair haired surgeon.
Hawkeye didn't know why but he felt a twinge of jealousy at his friend's last comment. He shouldn't. It was only natural that a fellow spend time in the arms of his wife. That's what nature intended. But after all of these months together, why did he have such a hard time picturing BJ with anyone- anyone but him?
No, it couldn't be. He couldn't be harboring feelings for his best friend. The implications of that statement were far too great for Hawkeye to comprehend. That would mean he would have to admit to himself something that he wasn't sure he was capable of admitting. The signs were there, for sure. The glances, the touches, the laughter, the late night talks, the longing for B.J.'s company when he wasn't around. But that couldn't mean anything other than deep friendship, could it?
Sometimes he loved B.J. so much it literally hurt. He couldn't imagine what this war would be like without him. There was no way he could have survived it without him. He was for all intents and purposes his other half. That sounded…, no, Hawkeye shrugged. That just meant they were as close as two humans could possibly be without physical contact.
Did he want physical contact? Hawkeye had to admit that sometimes when B.J. brushed up against him he felt something he'd never felt with any woman. He felt… alive, like something that had been missing had been found. He couldn't explain it, and he doubted that B.J. knew that he had that effect on him. B.J. would probably freak out if he knew that he did. One day Hawkeye would tell him, but for tonight he would have to leave it alone. Sometimes some things were just better left unsaid
