Another Jock and JR fic
JR couldn’t believe it. He was the proud father of another boy, Austin James Ewing. He was a fine looking baby, resembling his brother John Ross, weighing in at 8 lbs 10 oz with a full head of hair. He was the envy of all the parents in the nursery. It had only been a year since John Ross was born, but a long time in coming. Austin was a fitting name, since he would be the pride of Dallas. Jock couldn’t be happier. Sue Ellen wanted a girl, but JR couldn’t have been any happier to have her had borne another boy. He knew she would come around; the important thing was he was happy and there was no drama this time around. He was a product of a happy marriage, which was more than they could have said the first time. JR was glad to say that he had made his daddy proud.
Standing there with his daddy, looking in on the nursery, JR couldn’t help but reflect on the long road that he and Sue Ellen had taken to get to where they were today. They had both made so many mistakes, most of which were his fault. He had been a lousy husband, and wasn’t a perfect father. But he swore this time he would be different. He had two children to think about. He smiled. Who would have thought he would have named a child after his brother? But his brother had been partially responsible for this child, JR laughed. Bobby James Ewing had pushed him to be a better father and husband, even though JR would never admit it. Being a good husband came naturally to the youngest Ewing; he took after their daddy that way, even though Jock had made many mistakes. JR didn’t want to be like Bobby, but he had a grudging respect for him. This was the only thank you he would ever give him for the years of hard work he had given to Ewing Oil and to the family.
“What are you thinking about son?” Jock asked.
“Oh, daddy, just wondering if I’ve finally made you proud?”
“I’ve always been proud of you. Maybe I’ve just never told you that enough. I’m proud of all of my boys.” Jock put his hand on JR’s shoulder.
“Now that I’ve given you the grandsons you’ve always wanted from me…”
“I love my granddaughter just as much as these boys, don’t you be forgetting that!”
“I know but…”
“Lucy is every much as a Ewing as you or I are. So is Gary or Bobby. I know you and she have your differences but she’s flesh and blood. And it’s high time you remember that. When you have a daughter you’ll see that,” Jock pointed out.
“Who says I’ll be having a daughter? Haven’t you noticed that I produce males?” JR laughed.
“You’ll be giving Sue Ellen a daughter. She loves her sons but she wants a daughter. And you love her. I can see it in the way you treat her. That hasn’t always been the case but I can see it in the way you come home and the way you carry yourself around her. Just the fact that you’re standing here today proves that I’m right. Don’t ever forget this day. Not every day will be this good. There will be more bad days, maybe more bad than good, but you’ve done right by her, and you’re a man now. She needs the man that you are today.”
“How did you do it daddy? How did you know that you were ready to be married to one woman?” JR asked.
“I didn’t always. But I found your mama and I knew I found a good woman. She was there in the hard times and the good. She is the mother of my children and I knew that she deserves the respect that comes with that. You need to think about how you’re feeling right now and think about your boys and what they need. Sue Ellen did right by you and you need to do the same for her.”
“I will daddy. I know she did a good thing for me and so help me God I’ll give her the best I got.”
“That ain’t good enough.”
JR looked at him in surprise. “Excuse me?”
Jock turned to stare at him. “You heard me. It’s time you grew up and became a man. A real man keeps his word. You promised you would honor her and by honor her that doesn’t mean tomcatting around with the first thing in a skirt that crosses your path. Maybe its my fault. I’ve turned a blind eyes to all your comings and goings but I won’t have anymore of that. Do you hear me boy?”
JR nodded. His daddy was right. He had responsibility, real responsibility. It was time to grow up and become a man. He didn’t know what it would take but he would prove to Sue Ellen and his daddy that he had what it took to make this marriage work. He owed it to his boys to show them what a real man was, just like his daddy did for him. For better or for worse, he was in this for life. No matter what it took.
