To sanda, thanks for the idea!
Phyllis liked her job. She showed up to work every day and she got along well with Sly. Bobby was the best boss to work for, and he never yelled at her. She did make the occasional mistake, and he was careful when he corrected her. Even JR was courteous with her, which surprised her. She knew his reputation, and she was careful to avoid him when he was in a foul mood. She didn’t envy Sly- she had to put up with a lot. Phyllis knew that she had a much more enviable job even though it wasn’t easy by any stretch of the imagination. Ewing Oil was a high pressure job and anyone who worked in the company had to be pretty tough to work there.
It was Secretaries’ Day, and was tradition flowers were delivered to both Sly and Phyllis. They definitely brightened the girls’ day. Bobby came in, a little later than usual.
“Morning Phyllis,”he smiled. “I see you received your deliveries all right.”
“Thank you Bobby. They are beautiful,” Phyllis answered.” Sly was in JR’s office.
“You deserve them. You always put in a hard day’s work. It’s always nice to see your bright smile around here. As opposed to my brother’s bright sunshiney face.”
Phyllis laughed. “I wouldn’t know about that.”
“Now’s the time to agree with me. I am your boss.”
“Yes, Bobby.”
“Say, would you like to go to lunch with me today?”
She smiled. “Sure. I’d love to.”
“Great.”
At lunch, Bobby ordered their drinks. “So, Phyllis, how is everything in your world? Besides life at Ewing Oil, which I know is just super.”
“Life is pretty good. I stay pretty busy. I have to.”
“How is your boyfriend?”
“We broke up a while ago.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t know.”
“That’s okay.”
Bobby frowned. “Do you mind me asking what happened?”
“Oh, the usual, I wanted to settle down, he didn’t,” Phyllis sighed.
“I’m sorry. Is there some way I can help?”
“Bobby, you are so sweet. I don’t know why…. Never mind.”
“No, say it.”
Phyllis blushed. “I don’t know why some lucky lady hasn’t swept you off your feet yet.”
“Phyllis, you are so sweet. And you know, I feel the same way about you. Some day some lucky man is going to just wisk you away and I would be so lost without you.”
The two looked at each other awkwardly for a few minutes, realizing the implications of his statement. Phyllis looked away nervously. She had long harbored a crush on her boss but had prayed he would never be able to tell.
“Say, Phyllis….this might sound crazy…. And I don’t want to put you on the spot…. But have you ever thought about the two of us?” Bobby asked.
“I don’t know, Bobby…” she trailed off.
“I’m sorry, maybe I shouldn’t have put you on the spot.”
“Can I be honest with you?”
“Please. I would hope we can be nothing with each other if not honest,” Bobby stated.
“Sometimes I’ve wondered… about you and me….maybe I shouldn’t have said that.”
Bobby smiled. “I’m glad you told me. I’ve wondered the same thing. Now that we’re both on the same page, why don’t we do something about it? How about I pick you up Friday night?”
Visibly relieved, Phyllis nodded. “I’d like that.”
And the two made plans to go out, which went nicely. The two dated secretly for awhile, and then JR found out. He teased Phyllis, but she didn’t mind. Bobby made her happy and vice versa. Their relationship was one built on mutual respect, understanding, laughter and fun. It was the happiest anyone had seen Bobby in a long time.
