Chapter 1
“Lucy, what are you doing here?” Mickey asked as he looked over at the bubbly blonde who was wearing a long flowery dress, her hair pulled back in pig tails.
“I’m here to see you, silly. I don’t want to hear any fuss from you. I told you that I would visit you every day and here I am. I have to say….it is so good to see you. Even though I just saw you yesterday it seems like a million years. I missed you, Mickey.”
Mickey Trotter watched her from his bed. He didn’t know why she bothered to visit him, why anyone bothered. He was making progress, but he didn’t want to get anyone’s hopes up. Sometimes it hurt him more to see her than it did if she were to stay away. She was a constant reminder of the life that he was leaving behind. He knew she loved him, but what would she be giving up by being with him? She was so young, so pretty, so free. She shouldn’t be burdened with a young man trapped in an old man’s body. How could he make her see that leaving him would be the best thing for her?
“Lucy, I told you that I don’t want you coming around here no more. I mean it. These visits have got to stop. They’re not doing me no good and they’re not helping you any. I don’t want to hurt you but I don’t want you coming ‘round here no more. I’ve tried in every way possible to get you to see that but you refuse to listen to me. I guess I have to come right out and say it. I don’t want you here no more.”
Mickey couldn’t look her in the eyes as he spoke, for he knew that they would betray him. He wanted her, more than anything in the world. As much as he wanted to walk again he wanted to hold her in his arms, to feel her long beautiful hair, to have her lean in against in chest the way they did when their love was brand new. But he had to be real- those things were never going to happen again. And he loved Lucy enough to let her go and find herself some real happiness. He didn’t want her tied down to someone that couldn’t give her the kind of love she needed, the love she deserved if she were truly honest with herself.
“Michael Trotter, you stop that. I’ve told you a thousand times…I love you and I’m never going to leave you. How can I make you see that you can’t get rid of me that easy? You think you’re so slick with your bad words and tough attitudes but look at who you’re dealing with- Miss Lucy Ann Ewing, the queen of all attitude. So if that’s your best shot, I laugh. Ha ha ha. Bring it on brother because you won’t lose me.”
Tears began to fall down Mickey’s face. “Why must you make me do this?”
“You’re the one who tries to push me away, sweetheart but as you can see I’m not going anywhere so you just shut up and let me do the talking for a while….what is it…” Lucy asked, concerned.
“Lucy, I don’t know how to tell you this…but I don’t love you.”
Lucy’s mouth opened and she felt like she’d been punched in the gut. Out of everything she’d been through, this was the worst. She’d been making plans to marry Mickey- he was the love of her life…they’d shared so much together and she was there for him through all of this. It had nearly killed her to see him lying there in that hospital bed but she did it. She faced all of her fears and pulled herself together to be the kind of girlfriend she could be proud of. And now she finds out it didn’t matter in the end- Mickey never really loved her.
“How dare you!” she began to look around for something to punch but couldn’t find anything. Instead she took her bobby pin and let out all of the air from the dozens of balloons that were in his room. “I gave up everything because I loved you. You made me a better woman. You taught me what love is….I never knew how to love someone, not really, not until I met you. I would have waited for you. I wanted to marry you…I thought we had a plan….I thought you were pushing me away because you were ashamed of your condition but you were really pushing me away because you don’t love me! Well I hate you Mickey Trotter. No….I love you too much to hate you. But I just don’t ever want to see you again!”
With that, Lucy ran out of the room, not bothering to look back. If she had she would have seen all the anxiety building up in Mickey, causing his toe to tap nervously.
