The Man In Love With You
Cliff could barely breathe. Afton was gone. This was the last thing he imagined happening to him. They had been through so much together. She had been there when he needed her the most- after his mother died. He knew that he wasn’t the most romantic guy in the world but he didn’t think he deserved this. What was he going to do without her? Even he recognized that she was the best thing to ever happen to him- why couldn’t he see that before now. This was just his luck.
He couldn’t see a good thing in front of him to save his life- that’s just who he was. He always wanted what he couldn’t have, and didn’t want he had. Afton had known that about him, and had loved him anyways. But even she had had her limits. Did she stop loving him? Cliff refused to believe that. She couldn’t. What they had was real. He saw the way she took care of him, the way she nurtured him when he needed it. What did he do so bad that she couldn’t stand being with him anymore?
Was he that bad of a guy? Cliff didn’t think so. He was a simple guy. He liked to make a buck, who didn’t? He liked his routine, go to work, come home to a nice home, see his girl. Maybe he didn’t always make Afton his priority. In a way he couldn’t blame her for leaving. If she was gone, the fault was his. So he wasn’t the easiest guy to live with. Even he deserved love too, right? He’d loved before, and lost. But this was different. He’d thought he’d finally found the one he could settle down with, maybe have a couple of kids with. But he just had never gotten around to asking her.
Suddenly he felt so empty. All of the things he’d achieved were nice. He was part of a nice company, he had a nice place to live, had a few bucks. He thought that he was a catch. But maybe he didn’t know how to treat a woman. Would he wind up spending his life alone? Afton was the one he wanted, and he’d blown it. Sometimes it just didn’t pay to be practical after all.
He looked over and saw a picture of himself and Afton and walked over and turned it over. It was just a painful reminder of what he’d lost. Doing what he normally did when he felt low, he picked up the phone and ordered himself some Chinese. It didn’t help to fill the void. Neither did the two scotches he drank. After tossing the throw pillows off the couch and pacing for a few minutes, Cliff realized that he had to do something or he would go crazy. So he picked up the phone and asked his sister to come over. After hearing the desperation in his voice, she agreed.
“Cliff, what has gotten into you? You look terrible and your place is a mess,” Pam scolded.
“You won’t believe it. Afton has left.”
“Where has she gone? She’ll kill you coming back to this mess.”
“No, you don’t get it. She’s gone. She’s finished. She’s had enough. She’s not coming back,” Cliff sighed.
Pam wasn’t altogether surprised. Afton was many things, but she wasn’t a saint. Cliff wasn’t exactly the easiest person to live with. “I’m sorry. Is there anything I can do for you?”
“Can you call her up and talk some sense into her?”
“I think that’s your job. She won’t come back to you if you’re looking like this,” Pam pointed out.
“Hey, lay off. I have a right to slack off a bit. My woman just left me.”
“Well I’m not surprised. You weren’t exactly boyfriend of the year.”
“Whose side are you on?” Cliff questioned, his feelings hurt.
“I’m on your side of course. I just know that you aren’t the most attentive person in the world. She probably just got sick and tired of you not paying her any attention. And I imagine she was hoping that your relationship would lead to marriage,” Pam said.
“I did ask her.”
“How?”
“It came up.”
“How romantic.”
“You know me, I’m not the most romantic guy in the world.” Cliff told his sister.
“Well now is the time to be. Call her up. Bring her back. I’m not the one you should be talking to. Do what you have to do. You can be charming when you want to. Don’t waste any time. Call her now!”
Cliff nodded, then went over to his phone.
After a few minutes, Cliff was pleased to announce that Afton agreed to turn around and come back to talk with him. Pam walked over to hug him.
“You can do this.”
“I hope so. I sure hope so.”

Cliff had ordered three dozen roses, which surprised Afton. He’d never done such a thing during their relationship. She wasn’t surprised to see the half empty cartons of Chinese food and had to laugh.
“What do you want, Cliff.”
“I wanted to tell you that I missed you.”
“I haven’t been gone that long,” Afton laughed.
“I know. But I’ve been wrong about so many things. I know why you left me. I thought I knew you but I really don’t. I don’t know your favorite color. I don’t where you where born. I know you put up with me. I know you’ve been there for me when I needed you. And I can’t imagine my life without you. And I’m asking you for another chance,” Cliff said, looking into her eyes.
“Cliff, I don’t know. You’ve hurt me so many times. I just think you don’t get it- you don’t get me. You are so involved in your little vendettas that you miss out on what’s important in life. I have goals and dreams too. I am important in this relationship too and I don’t think you realize that. I love you but you’re a very selfish man.”
Cliff looked down. “I know I’m not the greatest man in the world. I know I’m difficult to live with, and I like a good fight. I know I like things my way and I’m set in my ways. But I know that I’m the man in love with you.”
Afton smiled. She knew how hard it was for Cliff to say that. That was as close to romantic as he could get. She wanted to be with him, but she didn’t know if he could change.
“Afton Cooper…. I want to marry you. I should have asked you this sooner. Will you be my wife? I can’t promise you that I’ll change or that life with me will always be easy. But I promise you that I will always love you, and you can take that to the bank.”
“Oh, Cliff,” Afton said with tears running down her face, “I would love to marry you.”
Cliff was right. Life with him was not easy, it was downright difficult at times. But he kept his promise. He did love her in the best way that he knew how, and they did enjoy a very nice life together. He always wanted revenge on JR Ewing, and being happy was the best revenge.
