A time for letting go
She was doing it- Lucy Ewing was getting married. She couldn’t believe she was going to become Lucy Cooper in a few short minutes. After all of these years she was finally doing something right with her life. She couldn’t believe her daddy was here to give her away. She was wearing her grandma’s dress, a privilege she did not take lightly. Everyone was making such a fuss over her. It was truly her special day. Even JR was being so kind to her.
“Well Lucy, looks like you won’t be a Ewing for too much longer. How do you feel about that?” JR asked as she headed upstairs to get ready.
“Don’t listen to him. You’ll always be a Ewing,” Val spoke up.
“I know that. I was just teasing. No need to lose your head on a day like this. Can’t an uncle tease his favorite niece?”
Lucy rolled her eyes. “I’m not sure I want to be your favorite anything.”
“You’re my favorite headache, that’s for sure.”
“Don’t go there, JR. You’re such a pain in my…”
“Lucy!” Val spoke up.
“Well he is!”she insisted.
“Look at you, all grown up. I think you’ve done well for yourself. The Cooper boy seems like a decent enough fellow. I think you’ll do well to marry him.” JR announced.
“Not that it matters, but thank you.” Secretly it pleased Lucy to hear JR say something nice about her soon to be husband. She wanted everyone to know that he was as wonderful as she thought he was.
“Lucy, I know that we’ve had our differences, but I wanted to tell you that I want you to be happy. I mean that. And you will always be a Ewing, forever. If he ever gives you a moment’s grief you let me know and I’ll take care of him.”
“Thanks, but that’s my job.” Gary announced. “And I will handle it.”
“Daddy!”
“Well I will. I won’t let any daughter of mine be hurt by anyone. If you need me you just call me and I’ll come down here and take care of him.”
“There’s a meaningful threat,” JR muttered. Lucy, Val and Gary glared at JR.
“Oh Mamma, I’ve got to go get ready. I’ll see you in a bit. Daddy, get ready for me.” Lucy kissed her mamma, daddy, and even JR on the cheek as she ran upstairs. Everyone watched upstairs and agreed she would make a beautiful bride.
Val couldn’t help but think of the little girl she was letting go of. Gone was the little girl whose hair she would spend hours braiding, playing dolls with, climbing trees with whenever she found time to visit with her. Val had long dreamt of playing in the ocean with Lucy. She’d hoped that someday Lucy would have moved to California to live with her and Gary, and now she knew that would never happen. She was no longer the innocent little girl that she’d given birth to but rather a young woman. All of the hopes of reuniting as a family, of fighting the Ewing family, of being strong enough to declare her own independence were gone forever. Valene had a lot to let go of today, and she just prayed that she had the strength to do it.
As Gary walked his daughter down the aisle, he forced a smile as he held back his tears. He knew that he was letting go of his daughter in a manner of speaking. She was no longer his little girl but a young woman about to embark on a new journey. Her mistakes were no longer his to account for, but hers to own. He could not blame himself for the mistakes that she would be making. It was easier that way, for he hated seeing her hurt. Like Valene, he too had dreamed of the day she would join them in California, and now it was final that that would never happen. So many things to let go of. The worst part of it was for him was that he had to let go of her to another man. He would no longer be the number one man in her life. Would she still love him the way she always had? Would he still be her hero? There were so many unknowns. She would be letting go, too, of her childish worship of her parents. So many transformations on this days, and change was not easy for Gary. He’d never let himself think about what would happen after this day, he only knew that he would need his wife more than ever.
There was a lot of letting go, but a lot to gain. The family was gaining a new son, a new grandson, a new nephew. New dreams of grandchildren, new dreams of the future. The start of a new generation was at hand. It was time to let go and look forward to the future. It was never easy to let go, but with the support of each other, they could move on with their life. They had no other choice. Life happens.
