Melinda, Sanda and Jessie were great friends, and they'd been looking forward to celebrating New Year's all weekend. They didn't go out much, but Melinda kept smiling and telling them this was going to be their year- they were all going to be in relationships by the end of this year.
None of them really drank much, but they were surprised when someone sent over a bottle of champagne. They looked over and saw a group of guys looking over and smiling and waving at them.
“Oh no,” Sanda laughed, her face turning red. “They saw us looking at them!”
“This could be a sign. These guys could be our future husbands,” Melinda whispered, causing Jessie and Sanda to laugh loudly.
“First, let's just find out their names and thank them for the drinks, unless you really want me to go find a wedding chapel first,, Melinda,” Jessie teased.
Before they could get up, one of the guys walked right up to them. He was checking all the girls out, and Melinda looked at Jessie and rolled her eyes.
“Hey, you sexy ladies single?” the guy smiled as he leaned over to look at Jessie, his elbow in Melinda's face. Sanda tried not to laugh, she knew Melinda would hate that.
“Yes.” “No.”
“Which is it...I can understand your hesitation, you girls could all be dating George Clooney and Brad Pitt and Keith Urban, but you'll never do better than us,” The guy just grinned, and Melinda rolled her eyes.
“Excuse me, I'm going to the ladies' room,” Melinda got up and rolled her eyes at the guy as she left.
“Your friend, she don't like me, does she?”
Jessie was trying to be polite. “It's okay. I'm sorry, she just is...she's been going through a tough time.”
“Well, I don't know about your friend, but you look like you're ready for a good time...”
Sanda and Jessie just laughed. “We're not that kind of girls. If you're looking for one night stands maybe you'd better go hit on those girls...” they pointed at some girls who'd walked in wearing very little.
The guy grinned. “Want me to let you in on a little secret? Those ladies aren't ladies. They're really dudes! I swear!”
Jessie turned red. “How would...”
“Ugh, no, I ain't like that! I mean, I'm a cop and we see those people at the station almost every week.”
“Oh,” Jessie smiled again.
“You ladies want to join us? We'd like your company. Oh, by the way, I'm Shane, that over there is one of my partners, Lem, he's a good guy.”
“What about the other guy?” Sanda asked.
Shane rolled his eyes. “He's nobody. He's kind of a party pooper. Hey, maybe your other friend would get along with him!”
Jessie turned around.
“Hey,” he touched her arm. “I wasn't trying to insult your friend. I'm sorry. I just get the feeling she doesn't like me much...”
Jessie sighed. “It's okay. Sanda, what do you think, should we join them?”
“Well we need to wait for Melinda. If she says yes then we'll be over in a few minutes. Is that okay, Shane?” Sanda smiled.
“Sure. I'll...I'll go back to my friends. We'll be over there, hope you will join us soon.”
As Shane left, Jessie wondered what they were getting into. She was scared, they didn't know anything about those guys, and she knew Melinda already didn't like Shane. But for some reason, Jessie did, and she prayed that Melinda wouldn't mind if they joined the guys. It could be the most interesting New Year's yet.
