for Jessie
ch 1
Dutch and Claudette walked back to their desks, after she had treated him for lunch. He was always so nice to her, always offering to pay for dinner, coffees, snacks- he even bought her a birthday bouquet of flowers and balloons this year, which had embarrassed her to no end. But she knew he meant well, and that the guys at work always gave him a hard time, so she kind of tried to look out for him.
David approached Dutch. “I need you to talk to this lady for me, she's in my office but I'll let you two talk in private.”
“Sure. It's not another prostitute case, is it? I thought vice was handling those...”
David smiled. “Trust me, you want to take this.”
Claudette smirked at Dutch, who followed David to his office.
“Dutch- you remember Misty. She says she's a long lost friend of yours.”
Of course he remembered Misty. He'd been twenty five, she had been his first real girlfriend. He'd loved her so much. But of course, she'd broken his heart.
“Misty- how can I help you today?” Dutch cleared his throat.
“Is that any way to treat a long lost friend?”
“It has been a while...”
“Seems to me we were more than just friends, or have you forgotten?” she smiled, and after watching Dutch turn five shades of red, David shut the door and excused himself.
“You left. I wanted...more.”
“You wanted to marry me,” She smiled.
“You said no.”
“Don't tell me you're still mad about that? Come on, Dutch, we were young, out of college. Besides I didn't think you wanted to marry the first girl you ever went to bed with.”
He looked down. “I wanted to marry you,” he sighed.
She walked over and put her hand on his. “Hey...I'm sorry, okay? I was young, confused. I had a lot to deal with. You just don't know what I had to deal with...”
“I would have if you told me!” But then he calmed down. “It doesn't matter now anyways. Was there anything else you needed from me?”
“Dutch...” Misty paused, her eyes filled with tears. “I'm dying.”
He looked at her, trying to see if she was serious. “What?”
She nodded. “I have ovarian cancer. Caught it late. I don't...It's stage four.”
Dutch looked at the floor. “God, I'm sorry. I didn't know...if there's anything you need, anything I can do...”
“Actually, there is one thing I need from you.”
He'd made the offer, but was still surprised that Misty was so quick to take him up on that. “What's that?”
She reached in her purse. “This is Angela. I need you to look after her.”
He stared at the photo. “She's your...she's your daughter?”
“Dutch, she's your daughter too.”
Suddenly he felt the room spinning. A daughter? How in the world could she have kept something like this from him? This was too much.
“I don't know....what do you want from me, Misty?”
“Please, Dutch. I found out I was pregnant. You were starting your career. I didn't want to burden you with a child and a wife at your age. I was so confused. I thought I could do it by myself. Right now, I'm all she has. I don't want her to go to foster care- you know how those places are. Please, I know it's asking a lot. You're her father. I know you'd be a good daddy.”
He really didn't know what to say. Just then, David walked in, and holding his hand was a little ten year old girl. Angela. His daughter.
Angela walked over and clung to Misty. “Please, Dutch. I can barely take care of myself now. I don't want to ...I don't want to think she's all alone in a few months. Can I...will you do this for me? For Angela?”
Dutch didn't know what to say, but he knew what the right thing to do was. This was his daughter, the family he'd always wanted. He had no other choice. “All right, Misty. I'll do this.”
Misty smiled, and she walked Angela to him. “Angela...this is my good friend, Dutch. You'll be getting to know him pretty well. Remember the nice man Mommy told you about? Angela, sweetie...this is your daddy!”
David looked at Dutch with a look of surprise in his eyes, and all Dutch knew was that his life was never going to be the same.
