As Rick said goodbye to his best friend, he'd thought about who he'd become, what he'd become. This was no life. He was forced to do things that he'd never thought about doing before. He was a man of the law, a man of the people. People trusted him before, but now they depended on him for his very survival. It was almost too much to bear. But he had Lori and Carl and the unborn baby to keep him going.
The baby. He wasn't sure if it would be a blessing or a curse, knowing what he did about walkers. The poor little one didn't stand a chance in this mad world, and it wasn't fair. Normally he would be over the moon about a baby, but this was no ordinary circumstance. The walkers now took over everything, over the world. What kind of world was that to bring a baby into?
Lori and Carl, his son. They had kept him alive and they hadn't even realized it. He depended on them even more than they depended on him, and that was saying a lot. They were watching his every move. Carl especially wanted to be just like him. If he only knew what his father had just done, would he still feel the same? Would he idolize him the way he was doing at the moment? Rick knew the answer, and he hated himself for it.
What was left, anyways? What was there really left to fight for? His family, for one thing. The others. They depended on him just as much as Lori and Carl did, maybe even more. Daryl would probably be all right. But the others- they looked to him for their every move. It wasn't fair. He hadn't asked for this responsibility. It was true, he'd sometimes thought about taking Lori and Carl and running off, but he couldn't do that to the group. They'd already lost so much. Rick knew in his heart that they didn't stand a chance without him, so what was he supposed to do? Just abandon his “family”? Abandon the survival mode that had kept them alive so far?
Rick couldn't do it. He had a reason to live, several actually, and as long as he had Lori and Carl and the baby then he would go on. He had to. Who would protect the little one? Lori? She was brave, but she was only one person. She had her hands full with raising a little boy who was quickly becoming a man. Carl was growing up too fast. He never would have brought a child into this world if he had only known what it would become.
But it was what it was, so he knew he had to make the most of it. He didn't know how long they could stay on the farm, but as long as he had fight in him, he would keep them there. It was the safest place that he knew of, so he would continue to plead, beg with Hershal to let them stay. He had no other choice. That baby needed a home, and so far Hershal had provided them with one. Of course, they couldn't stay forever, not according to the old man, but if Rick had his way, the whole group would stay, forever possibly.
Rick looked as his pregnant wife slept next to him. She looked so peaceful when she slept, almost as if this were just a bad dream. But this was real, so it meant fighting, fighting for his family, fighting for the group, fighting for the baby.
He kissed her good night, and then rolled over to go to sleep. That was, if he could sleep. But as for now, he had his family, and he had the group, and this would all be over soon. How it would end, he was afraid to think about, but with a little more of the evil gone from the world, he knew he would live to see another day. Rick had to. He had no other choice. Or did he?
The end
For my friends Jessie and Sanda who have been so supportive. Thank you Sanda for creating this thread. I wanted to "introduce" you to another character. Rick is actually the main character, I like him a lot.
