This is a Office/ATWT/ OLTL crossover story involving Melinda, Jessie and Sanda. It takes place in Oakdale.
It was the night before Christmas, and Melinda was feeling all alone. She was sitting at a diner in Llanview, waiting for her best friends Jessie and Sanda to show up. She wasn't looking forward to this conversation- her boyfriend had just broken up with her. She knew Jessie was happy with her boyfriend Andy and Sanda had just been proposed to by her boyfriend Reid. Reid had told Melinda and Jessie about his plans, but they had assumed that he was waiting for Christmas to seal the deal. But love won out, at least for Sanda, for Reid couldn't wait. He'd proposed to her after she'd drug him to a Christmas play. He'd complained the whole time they were watching it, but to his surprise afterward he dropped the big question on Sanda. She tearfully accepted, and now she was sporting a ginormous ring.
Melinda didn't know how this had happened to her. She loved her boyfriend, but he said that it was time for them to move on. She'd even picked out a good Christmas present for him, but he didn't want it. So now she was alone, on the worst time a person could be broken up with- the biggest holiday of them all. She hadn't wanted to ruin Jessie's or Sanda's holiday, but she knew she could count on them to cheer her up.
She started to cry, even though she had told herself that he wasn't worth it. She reached for a napkin and to her shock a stranger sat down in front of her and handed her one.
“Thanks,” she said as she tried to calm down.
“Hey, it's Christmas. What could possibly be wrong on this day?”
“I don't want to..I don't want to bother you.”
“You're not a bother. I just have been watching you and then when you started to cry..well, I never could stand to see a woman cry.”
“So you're just feeling sorry for me?”
“Yeah, kind of. But aren't you feeling sorry for yourself as well?”
Melinda was shocked. She wasn't used to being talked to that way, especially not by a stranger. “Excuse me?”
“Don't get me wrong- there's nothing like a bout of self-pity to get through the day. Trust me, I'm known for it as well. I'm not judging you. It's just that it's Christmas, almost the new years. Isn't a new year a time for a new start?”
“Is it that obvious that I need one?”
He smiled. “Yeah, kind of. But we all do. I've had more fresh starts than anyone deserves in one lifetime. And surely you haven't done the kind of things that I've done.”
He stopped so suddenly, so she looked at him in surprise. “What have you done, killed someone?” she laughed through her tears.
He bit his tongue. If she only knew. “Yeah, that's me. You figured me out. How'd you know?” he attempted to laugh.
“I'm sorry. Here you are being kind and I'm insulting you. It's just, I'm kind of having problems.”
“Guy problems.”
Now she was surprised. “Is it that obvious?”
“Sort of. But it's okay. We've all been there. It sucks but you go on. And before you know it the perfect person is sitting right in front of you.”
Melinda looked up, and their eyes met. She felt a pull to him that she hadn't felt with anyone, not even her ex-boyfriend, and it seemed as if they were about to kiss, when suddenly Melinda heard a familiar voice.
Jessie cleared her throat. “Are we interrupting something?”
“Oh... it's not what it looks like, “Melinda pulled back. “you don't understand...”
“It's okay,” Sanda reassured her. “This is Jessie, and I'm Sanda. We're Melinda's best friends.”
With a wry smile across his face, the stranger held out his hand. “I'm Todd. Todd Manning. Very nice to meet you.”
Jessie didn't know why but she had a feeling that Melinda was in big trouble. She looked at Sanda, and she hoped that her feeling was wrong.
