Set in The Show Where Diane shows up
"I've found myself suddenly missing my Maris," Niles wailed as he sought solace in the comfort of Daphne's arms.
"There, there, Dr. Crane. It will be all right. She will be back before you even truly realize she's gone. Are you upset about what Dr. Crane's ladyfriend said about Mrs. Crane? Being nitpicky at the party?"
"Oh, Daphne, you know me so well. I know that I should not let a woman in her condition upset me so, but I can't help it. Her neurosis, her rantings, her refusal to fit in socially- she reminds me so of my Maris."
Daphne couldn't help but feel a strange feeling, one of jealousy if she were honest with herself. "I know you do, but she'll be back before you know it. And then you two will be happier than ever."
Niles began to cry even more. "You don't understand, Daphne."
"Well you can always try me, I'd be happy to listen to you. You can talk to me anytime you'd like."
"Oh Daphne," he just loved saying her name. "Why can't Maris be more like you? You're so warm and supportive and caring. You haven't a mean bone in your body."
She laughed. "You didn't know me growing up handling me brothers. You're so kind, Dr. Crane. I dont' know why Mrs. Crane can't appreciate what she has. That has bothered me for some time now."
"It has?"
It was hard to say who was more startled by her revelation, Niles or her. "I suppose it has. Why, you're so warm and friendly and kind hearted. You would do anything for anybody. You're a sweet, dear man, and any woman who can't see that about you would be a fool."
Niles looked at her, and the tension between them only rose.
"Oh, Dr. Crane! I'm so sorry. It seems I've forgotten me place. Here I am insulting your wife when it's obvious you love her so."
If she only knew. "Sometimes I think I don't know the first thing about love," he sighed as he inhaled her shampoo.
"You and me both. I haven't really done well for meself since I've been in America. But look at you, you're married and you're..."
He looked at her expectantly.
"Well, you're married, and that counts for something. Any woman who can't appreciate you, well, pardon me frankness, but she would be a total fool."
"Would you appreciate me? If we were married I mean?" In his dreams.
"Pardon me?"
"I'm sorry, Daphne. I didn't mean to embarrass you. Maybe I should leave..."
"No, you won't be going anywhere in this condition. And you didn't embarrass me. I have me own confession which I'm afraid might embarrass you."
He looked at her. "Go ahead."
"I've always wondered what it would be like to be Mrs. Crane," Daphne declared boldly.
"You mean a wafer of a woman who doesn't know the difference between selfish and shellfish?"
They both laughed.
"No, I mean, to have a husband who loves her so, to have a husband who isn't afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve. I've always admired that about you, you know."
"You have?" No woman had ever spoken to him like this before, and he sure did not want this moment to end.
"Of course. What's not to admire? You shower her with affection and what does she do? She leaves you at every chance she gets, that shrill of a woman."
Now they both were shocked by her statement. "Oh, Daphne. You don't know how I've longed to hear you say that."
"You've wanted me to insult Mrs. Crane?"
He smiled. "No. I just...well, I'm so fond of you, and until this moment I wasn't sure that that fondness was returned."
"Why in another universe, just imagine if we were both single and looking? I might be the next Mrs. Crane for all we both know," she smiled.
Now he knew he was dreaming. Little did she know how prolific her words would wind up being. Until then, Niles knew that he had more to hold on to now. Daphne had affection for him, and while it wasn't love, it was the next best thing.
