this is for my friend Jessie who I know loves JR and Sue Ellen as much as I do.
Ten times JR almost said I love you
1) JR was a judge at the Miss Texas pageant. He was used to seeing pretty women, hell he’d dated a lot of pretty women, but this lot was special. For in this lot he spotted the woman who became his wife. Even though he considered himself a brave man, it still took him a lot (and some liquid) courage to walk up to the contestant who eventually won, a Miss Sue Ellen Sheppard. She was, quite simply, the most beautiful woman that he’d ever seen, and he’d seen a lot of them. It wasn’t until he got up close to her until he realized just how gorgeous her eyes were.
“I love..”
“what was that?” Sue Ellen smiled warmly at him with her dark brown eyes glowing.
“Nothing. Congratulations!” JR quickly changed the subject, but he knew then and there that his heart was gone forever.
2) It was the day of the barbeque, and he had finally taken home a girl whom he knew that his mama would like. Not only would she like Sue Ellen, his mama would fall in love with her the way he had. They hadn’t been dating long, but JR knew that this ranch would someday be the place Sue Ellen called home.
3) JR couldn’t believe it- he had finally sealed the deal. JR had proposed to Sue Ellen, and she said yes. Even though he hadn’t said the l word, he knew that she knew that he felt that way. He felt like screaming it from the top of Ewing Oil, but he was a practical man and wouldn’t make a fool out of himself, not even for a woman. But if there was one woman he would lose his head over, it was Sue Ellen Sheppard.
4) Sue Ellen had just given birth to a healthy baby boy, and in a sense that was the important thing. Seeing her lie in the hospital bed looking so helpless, with his brother Bobby beside him, he almost slipped and said those three little words, but Bobby was there, and he couldn’t risk looking a fool in front of him. So for now, just the thought would have to do. There would be other times in their marriage, he was sure of it
.
5) The baby was crying, and no one was around to take care of him. The baby just wouldn’t shut up, so JR walked in and picked him up. It was remarkable how quickly the boy responded to JR’s touch. Maybe this kid would be all right after all. He was kind of cute, JR had to admit. This was a good feeling, and once again those little words came to his mind. But until JR knew that John Ross was his, it would just have to wait.
6) Sue Ellen was being evil. There was no doubt in his mind that she enjoyed the position she was in. Here he was, shortly after busting Sue Ellen and Peter, in his bedroom and she was throwing it in his face he would be alone that night, and from now on. But behind her confident smile was the woman JR knew and loved. He thought about saying it, but he knew that would be thrown in his face. So for now he would bide his time, after all, it was on his side.
7) Sue Ellen had been missing for twenty-four hours, so the police were quietly looking for her. He didn’t know where she was or who she was with, but JR couldn’t help but worry about her. Finally, at eight in the morning, she came strolling in, looking like she hadn’t had a care in the world. He was just too glad to see her, but if he told her anything mushy she would likely repeat this little bender of hers. For now, he would just keep her put in her place, even though he knew where his place really was-with his wife.
8) It was John Ross’s graduation, and he couldn’t have been prouder of the boy if he tried. Soon John Ross would be taking his rightful place at Ewing Oil- this was the happiest day of his life. Nothing would have made him as proud as to see his son working at his granddaddy’s company. True, Bobby and Sue Ellen were running it, but no matter- John Ross was a Ewing, through and through.
9) JR had gone through a lot recently. His health wasn’t the greatest, and he was now in an assistant living facility. Sue Ellen came to see him, and even though she seemed to gloat in his misfortune, he knew that just the fact that she was there meant everything to him. One day he would show her just how much she had meant to him over the years.
10) It was Sue Ellen and JR’s would be 40th anniversary, and even though she hadn’t spoken to him in years, JR knew that she would be there for him tonight. He didn’t know why and he didn’t know how, but she would be there. Certainly she couldn’t forget this important occasion. Naturally, when she did show up, it was to complain over the grandchildren not calling her. But as she spoke of her family he realized that he had made the right decision by marrying her, even if he had made some poor choices. She was still every bit as beautiful as she always was and nothing, not even time would change that. Tonight he was going to tell her. After all, what else did he have to lose?
