Chapter one
“I don’t know what to do,” Scarlett muttered to herself as she made her way back from the yard. Ashley had rejected her once again, but that kiss, oh that kiss was worth the bewilderment she was feeling at the moment. He loved her, yes he did, but what good was love if he pushed her away time and time again? She was sick, maybe physically due to hunger and hard work, but emotionally she was even sicker. Once again she had come so close to having everything she ever wanted but yet once again had lost something that had never been truly hers.
Ashley loved her. She knew he did. She could tell by the way he kissed her that he felt for her exactly what she did for him. There was no way a man could kiss a woman like that and not love her. Maybe Scarlett realized that she did not know everything about love the way she once thought she did, but she knew when to hold on. And he had given her so much to hold on to.
Standing by the house with the dirt from the ground that Ashley had placed in it, she realized she had two choices- she could give him up now and admit defeat, or she could go back to him, make him realize that he had to hold on as well. If she felt like quitting, and she was ten times stronger than Ashley, then how was he supposed to feel? Of course, her eyes lit up with the realization. If she was tired, than he was too. He had to be. He was a veteran, he’d been held captive. Of course he didn’t know what he wanted; he was tired just as she was.
With the fresh bit of Tara’s ground still in her hand, Scarlett ran, not walked, back to Ashley who had apparently decided to work off his frustration by chopping some more wood. It wasn’t fair to see him working like that. As if he could read her mind, Ashley looked up to her.
“Yes, Scarlett?” he sighed as he set down the ax.
“Ashley, I know why you did that.”
“Did what?” He was almost afraid to ask.
“Why you stopped. I know why you did it Ashley.”
“I told you, it was a mistake. I have to think of Melly and Beau.”
“No,” she let the dirt fall down as she ran to him. “No my darling I know why you ..you turned me away. I know it’s because you’re tired and you’re sick and you just weren’t thinking clearly. Why, I’m not mad at you. I could never be mad at you. Don’t you know how much I love you?”
“Scarlett,” he pushed her away but she refused to let go. “I know you think you love me but don’t you see? I’m tired. You’re tired. We were both swept away by careless thoughts but you know I don’t feel for you what you feel for me…”
Scarlett stood right in front of him and took his hands. “Look at me and tell me you don’t love me. Go ahead.”
And with baited breath she waited for his answer.
