Set during the final week
Natalie knew she had hurt him so many times but this time she vowed she would make it work. She didn’t know how or why but this time was different. They both knew it was. They’d been through so many things together and had hurt each other over and over again but this time they had vowed they would make it work. No more lies or betrayal. They had declared their love in so many words. Neither one was the kind to get mushy or wear their hearts on their sleeves, but Natalie knew how John felt about her. It was obvious in the way he had held her this time. There was nothing to forgive, he had told her. She knew that he was lying, he had had many obstacles to overcome to get to this point, but the important thing was that he was there, they were both there, and she never wanted to leave his arms again.
She knew that John would have to leave soon; that was the nature of his job. But for right now she would stay tight in the afterglow of what had just transpired and enjoy what they had just given each other. He was a man of few words, but what he had said to her meant a lot. “There’s nothing to forgive.” It had taken him forever to get there, but now that he was there, Natalie knew she was never going to let him go again. She had been wrong about many things, but the biggest thing was that she had not trusted him. She had believed that he would not forgive her and had acted on impulse, and that had led to the first of many, many misunderstandings. How much time had been wasted because she did not trust him! Looking over at him, she wished that she could undo all of her mistakes but was grateful for the present, for it was only now that she could make up for all of her wrongdoings.
“What?” John smiled as he brushed the loose red strands of hair from her left eye.
“Nothing. Aren’t I allowed to smile?” Natalie grinned as she pulled the sheet over herself.
“Most definitely. I hope to see more of that in the future.”
“After today you can count on it. With Mitch dead and after our talk I’m just really looking forward to the future for the first time in a really long time.”
“It’s been a long time coming but I have to say I agree with you. Things are definitely looking up,” John agreed.
“I just can’t believe he’s dead. It’s like coming to the end of a book you’ve been reading for ages and finding that it’s that it’s everything you wanted it to be- and more. The good guy won and the bad guy got what was coming to him and that never happens. It’s too good to be true.”
“And don ‘t forget, the boy gets the girl,” John added as he leaned in for a kiss. They kiss for a few moments, and his hands wander, tracing her cheekbones and neckline with his fingers.
“This is really happening, isn’t it?” Natalie asked as she looked at him.
He nodded. “It’s all happening. You’d better get used to it.”
And she did get used to it. It wasn’t easy at first: Natalie and John weren’t used to getting everything they wanted, but together they learned to be a family with little Liam, and they worked to put the past and the ghost of Mitch behind them. It took some time to learn to trust each other, it was difficult but they found they had something worth working at. And that was the most valuable lesson of all.
