“I believe in fairy tales. Ours is not over.”
Todd stared at her with an intensity Blair hadn’t realized that she had missed until that moment. Only Todd could look at her like he knew what she was thinking and didn’t make her feel ashamed for it. Half the time she had something up her sleeve, but not this time, not with this Todd. She wasn’t sure what she was feeling, and she knew she should resist. Every time she gave into him she got trapped into his web of lies, and she was the one who got hurt, every time. It never failed; every time she opened her heart up to this man he would do something stupid to walk all over it and she would wind up betrayed and alone, and the circle of madness would begin all over again. But looking at him at his particular moment one would never know, almost, that there was a madman behind this wounded soul.
“Well,” Todd questioned.
“Well what?”
“Aren’t you going to kiss me? This is the part where they kiss you know. The boy and the girl they share their hopes and dreams and then they look into each other’s eyes and then, you know, they kiss.”
She laughed. If he had any idea of how close she had come to doing just that. “Sorry Todd. It’s not written in the cards for us. Not tonight anyways.”
“Why not? We had a really good night… I thought so anyways.”
“We did have a wonderful night. But you’re hurt and I’m not going to get you overexcited and then nothing can come of it. It wouldn’t be fair.”
Todd chuckled. “My someone certainly thinks highly of themselves. And I thought that I was supposed to be the one with the ego.”
“Todd you know what I meant..”
As Blair stood to walk away, he grabbed her arm and pulled her close, looking at her closely. She was afraid to look but even more afraid to look away. She knew that he could read her face, knew that her feelings were written all over it, and he knew it, but in a way she didn’t care. Despite her protests she wanted this as much as he did, maybe even more. But there was no way she would make it easy for him.
“I know you want me Blair. I can see it in your eyes.”
“Oh, that, I’m just thinking about , about the housework. I have to run the sweeper and I have to do the dishes and I have to..”
Todd knew he had to get her to shut up and there was only one way when she was like that. He pressed her against him and kissed her, leaving one eye open to make sure it was okay. She definitely did not protest. Placing her hands on his face, Blair gave in easily, her hair falling lightly against his cheeks.
“Now what was that about housework,” he grinned as he pulled back.
“Oh, stop.” She playfully tapped him. “Oh, did I, did I hurt you?”
“Yeah. You hurt me. I’m in pain. I think I need a nurse. Can you hook me up with one?”
“Stop it, I mean it. You’re not behaving,” Blair gently scolded, trying not to laugh.
“Now look Blair, it’s me. Do you really want me to behave?”
“Well.. maybe a little.”
“Okay then. Point proven. Now get over here,” he rolled her on top of him.
“What are you doing? You’re hurt!”
“I’m not that hurt. Tell me you don’t want this as much as I do.”
“I do want you. But I don’t want to hurt you either,” Blair sighed.
“Why don’t you let me decide how much I can tolerate? You’re the nurse, I’m the patient. You have to follow my orders. Now you can start by taking off that sweater or whatever it is you’re wearing…”
She didn’t know what to do. On one hand she had been waiting eight years for this moment; on the other hand, she didn’t want to further injure him either. Sensing her resistance Todd went ahead and helped her with her sweater.
“Todd!”
“What, it was going to come off, it was just a matter of time,” he smiled.
As he grinned at her, she knew it was no use. She could no more resist him than she could resist drinking a cup of coffee in the morning (another bad habit, nothing like the one she had with Todd, but still one she was trying to give up) or tapping her fingernails when she was nervous. If he was a habit, then help her but she wasn’t sure she wanted to give him up. And after what happened next she definitely wasn’t about to let him go again either.
“Do you know how bad we were Todd? Starr or Jack could have walked in on us. They could have been traumatized for life. We can’t do that again.”
“Well they didn’t, so they aren’t, and so we will. We’ll just tie a sock around the front door first.”
“Don’t be crude,” she laughed in spite of herself. “I mean it. No more of these.”
“You said there wasn’t going to be any in the first place so how am I supposed to start to believe you now?”
Blair rolled her eyes. “I’m serious Todd.”
He sat up and pulled her close with his good arm. “You know what, Blair… I think I still love you.”
She looked at him, surprised. “I love you too. I don’t think I’ve ever stopped.”
“No, you put on a good impression of stopping.”
“I’ve been mad at you but I never stopped loving you. Not once.”
“Well then I guess that settles that. Think the kids will be happy?” he asked.
“Well, Starr will,” she smiled at him, they both knew how Jack felt about his father.
“you know what? I’m home again, and I have my family back, I never thought I would be able to say that. Thank you.” He kissed her quickly but with enough meaning to let Blair know how he was feeling.
“You’re welcome. Welcome home, stranger.” As they held each other for the next few minutes, they both realized they had a lot to be grateful for. They were a family again. Todd was okay. The kids were all right. Things could be better, but they could have been a lot worse too. There was no place either of them would have rather been than right there at that moment. And all Todd could think was that it was good to be home.
