A little rewrite of history- okay a total rewrite
Blair thought she had it all; money, a nice home, and now, a brand new baby girl. She never thought she could be this happy. After losing two children, she was so scared that something would go wrong with this one, but here she was, a daughter of her own. She was so tiny but perfect, and nothing could go wrong. This day was perfect. In Blair’s heart she knew there was one thing missing, but she wouldn’t let her heart go there. She couldn’t let anything ruin this perfect day. Tears of joy had been shed, and she would not let her daughter out of her sight, for deep down she had a feeling he would show up. And she didn’t know if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
Him. She didn’t know how she felt about him. Todd Manning was the love of her life, but Blair would deny it to those who asked. He had hurt her over and over again, and she him, so there was no point in her sitting around thinking about what might have been today. There were moments when Blair looked at her daughter and she swore she saw her father in her, and she had to smile to herself. How would Todd react knowing he had a daughter? She had never told him about this child- she couldn’t. Todd would have either called her terrible names- he definitely would have- and said the child wasn’t his, or he would have tried to take the child from her, and Blair couldn’t have that. No, it was better that she left town. He would never find her in Canada, that was for sure.
Sure she missed her friends and her family, but she had started a new life for herself. She had a new home with some new friends-not a whole lot because she wasn’t sure who she could trust. She was well aware she was the mysterious person in town, but she didn’t care. She didn’t let her guard down. She was even getting to know a new guy, John, but she hadn’t gotten intimate with him. Her choices in men were infamously bad. Besides, she had given her heart away several times, and the last time she had she had never really gotten it back, even though she would not admit it. Todd still was a part of her, and now with this baby, she would never escape him.
What would she name this daughter? That was the big question. The nurses and doctors had all been anxious to hear what she had picked out, but Blair couldn’t decide. It was hard making a life -changing decision, especially not having anyone to help her. Not that she would have listened to Todd. She rarely did. She smiled. It wasn’t as if all of their times were bad. They had actually shared some pretty good ones. When they were close, it was like heaven. And it was bad, well, that went without saying.
They were too much alike, she decided. Both schemers, both liked to have their way. There was no way it could ever work out.
“Still, it would be nice to have your daddy here,” Blair murmured as she cradled her newborn daughter.
“I am here, Blair. Are you going to let me see my kid or what?” came a familiar voice as a startled Blair looked up. This couldn’t be happening. He couldn’t have found her. She had made sure of that.
“Todd? What are you doing here?”
“I could ask you the same thing. Pretty clever. Canada? It took me a little bit. I was going to ask you what you’re doing here but I can see you have your hands full.” He stared at the baby, a million thoughts going through his mind.
“Todd, don’t take her from me. She’s all I have. You left and I had no choice…”
“You gave me no choice Blair. Is she…”
“She’s yours, Todd. She’s ours. Would you like to see her?”
He thought about it for a minute. “Are you sure I won’t scare her?”
.
Blair smiled. “You’re her daddy. Of course you won’t scare her. Come here,” she said softly.
Reluctantly, Todd obeyed. He walked over by Blair’s side and looked at the baby who looked back up at him. He smiled in spite of himself.
“How did you find me?” Blair asked.
“I followed the stars.”
“That’s it. That’s what we’ll name her. Starr. Starr Manning. Do you like it?”
Todd nodded, unable to take his eyes off of his child. “It’s perfect. She’s perfect. Unlike us,” he said, causing his estranged wife to laugh.
“I know. But we must have done something right. Look at how she turned out. It’s going to be okay, isn’t it?”
He tried to say something but the words escaped him. Instead he looked into Blair’s eyes, and after a minute and after she nodded, he kissed her, and then he gently touched the baby’s forehead.
“Are you happy Todd?” Blair asked.
“Yeah..” his voice creaked. “Yeah. Are you?”
“I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I have everything I ever needed right here. “
“You mean…”
“Yes. I have you and the baby. We can do this. I know it won’t be easy but if we both try…”
“I’m not perfect Blair. I’m going to mess up and make mistakes and I will hurt you again.”
“Thanks Todd.”
“But I guarantee I will not let my daughter down. You can take that to the bank,” he added.
She took his hand. “I know. It’s all going to be okay.”
“Yeah. Yeah.” He kissed her, and as they watched Starr start to fall asleep, they both knew that it was a new beginning for the both of them. They both were aware of who the other one was; there were no false hopes or promises. Instead it was just a very good day for the three of them indeed.
