This is a General Hospital story. In in the only kids Sonny has are Carly's and Alexis'.
Sonny Corinthos was playing a dangerous game. All of his friends had turned against him, and the only friend left he had in the world was Jason. Even then, he was beginning to have thoughts. Dark thoughts. Sometimes when he talked to Jason his mind went places they shouldn’t. Is Jason telling the truth? Is he out to get me? He’s with them- I know he is. Sometimes, just sometimes, when he talked to Jason Sonny kept his hand a little too close to his desk drawer, where bad things were known to be found.
Logically he knew that Jason would never betray him. They were more than best friends- they were comrades, they had an understanding, deeper than family’s. They were family, in every way. They had been through so much together, and Sonny would literally lay down his life for Jason. So when he started thinking bad things about his friend, that should have been a warning that something was wrong, very wrong.
His kids hadn’t even talked to him in months. Carly had done her best to keep them away from him, and Alexis wasn’t too happy with him. Not that Sonny could blame them. If he were them he wouldn’t let them anywhere near him. But of course, that’s not how his mind was working these days. Alexis and Carly were true nemeses, always have been always will be, but right now he knew they were working against him, poisoning his children’s minds against him. He sometimes thought of doing bad things to Jason, but somehow, something always stopped him. Jason was his friend, he would remind himself. Jason was not the bad guy. On this cold January morning it was becoming all too clear who Sonny’s real enemy was- Sonny himself.
It was a Saturday morning, and he had been up all night for the past four nights. He’d been pacing, cleaning, listening to music, anything he could to try to detract him from the voices in his mind telling him that he had nothing left. They were there, always there, and so for the better part of the last week he had not drove, , he had not eaten during that time either. If Sonny had bothered to look in the mirror he would have seen the bags under his eyes and that his dark brown eyes were even darker, but he had stopped caring about his appearance. No one, not even Jason, had access to him- he had made sure of it. He had told Jason to tell everyone he was out of town, and so far it had worked.
He was playing on the computer trying to focus when Max his bodyguard came in the room.
“Mrs. Corinthos is here to see you, boss.”
Sonny turned to stare at his employee. “I thought I told you under no circumstances was I to be disturbed! And now you let Carly, my soon to be ex-wife in my home, where I call the shots and I make the rules? Do you know what happens to people who break the rules in my world, Max?” Sonny started walking towards his drawer, when Carly made her presence known.
“Leave him alone Sonny. I told him to let me in. My God, look at you! You’re a mess! No wonder you won’t see anyone. What’s wrong Sonny?”
“Carly, don’t press me. You’re a smart woman- if I were you I would pick up your purse, say goodbye to your little boyfriend, and get the hell out of here. You’re not welcome here. Take a hint.”
Carly stared at him for a minute then ran to his restroom, locking the door behind her. She knew exactly what she was looking for- she checked the date on his medication bottles. Lithim. Last refill date 12/5/11. Today was Jan. 2nd. There were more than twenty pills in there. There were a few other medication bottles, each nearly completely full. Carly did the math. Sonny had been off of his meds for three weeks, and it was starting to show. Only she and Jason knew what he was capable when he was off his meds.
“Sonny!” Carly ran out with the Lithium still in her hand. “Do you want to tell me what’s going on or do you want me to fill in the blanks?”
“Carly- get out! You need to mind your own business. And that’s not just a friendly suggestion,” Sonny growled as he tried taking them from her.
“Look at me! Look at me! You’re a mess, you’re falling apart- how long has it been since you’ve slept?”
“A few days.”
“A few days? Sonny do you hear yourself? You need to go see your doctor and I’m not leaving until you do.”
“You’re not my wife anymore, you can’t tell me what to do.”
“The hell I can’t. I’m still your wife and even if I weren’t I’m the mother of your children and we’ve been through too much for you to push me away now. You need me Sonny whether or not you will admit it. What you’re doing is selfish. There are too many people who love you and depend on you for you to pull this.”
“I don’t need you…” he started to raise his voice, until even he could hear the strain when he spoke. “I don’t need you. I don’t need anyone! Don’t you get it? That’s who I am. I’m Sonny Corinthos. I’m a bad man. I don’t care about anyone else but myself. And the sooner you learn that the better off you will be,” he turned around.
Carly decided to change her approach. “Fine. Don’t take your meds. How long can you go without sleep? A week? Two weeks? Three? You’re not invincible Sonny. You have manic depression. You need your medication. Without it… well we both know what happens. And you’re half-way there now.” She reached over and ran her fingers through his hair, something very few people would do right at that moment. “ Look at me.”
He thought about it, and didn’t do anything. So she walked in front of him. “I want you to come with me now. Look.. it’s me you’re talking to. It’s Carly. Michael and Morgan’s mom. I would never let anything happen to you, you know that. I promise only good things can happen from now on but you have to see your doctor. I can’t let you live like this. You’re hurting Sonny and when you hurt I hurt. You’re a part of me. We look out for each other. If I were in a bad way I know you- you would come to me and tell me to get it together so I’m doing that for you now. Come with me, let’s go see your doctor. I promise it will all be alright.”
Sonny looked around, and thought about what he had been through. He wasn’t sure who he could trust but there was something about her voice- He hated how headstrong she was but right now he knew that she was right. Something wasn’t right, and they had to find out what it was.
The doctor came in and asked Carly to leave.
“If she leaves I leave. She’s a part of the deal. She stays,” Sonny ordered.
“As you like, Mr. Corinthos. Now, I just want to ask you a few questions…you say you’ve been off your medication… how for how long?”
“On and off for two months. Mostly the past three weeks.” Carly was shocked. She had no idea.
“Are you finding yourself becoming more suspicious, having trouble trusting people?”
“I trust no one.”
Carly smiled. She saw that a mile away.
“No, I’m serious. Are you having…troubles?”
Sonny tried not to look at Carly but his eyes inadvertently met hers.
“Yes,” Carly spoke up. “He hasn’t been seen in days. He’s made himself invisible to those in his life who love him. His reality is a very different one than yours and mine but can’t you take one look at him and know that something’s not right?” she pleaded.
“Mr. Corinthos, you have a history of bipolar, and also you have a history of not cooperating in taking your medication. At this point I would normally talk about hospitalization…” the doctor warned.
“Hosptial? Do you know who you’re talking to?”
“I’m very aware of who I’m talking to, and even Superman has his limits. You have a chemical imbalance, Mr. Cornithos. That doesn’t mean there is anything wrong with you. It just means you have to learn how to take care of yourself. I’ve done just about everything I can but we have to get you stabilized. And I’m not afraid to use whatever means necessary to make sure my patients get the treatment they need. Do you want me to continue with your treatment?”
Sonny nodded.
“I’ll give you two a minute then I’ll be right back to let you know what happens next.”
As the door shut Sonny looked at Carly. This was the man who was unafraid of anything, who faced down weapons and murderers and all sorts of unlikable activity, but as he turned towards his estranged wife, he was afraid to admit what they had both come to realize- right now Sonny Corinthos was afraid of his own mind.
“It’s going to be okay, you know that.”
“I’m not going to any hospital. Who does he think he is threatening me? Is he stupid or something?”
“Sonny, calm down. You know he’s on your side. You know who else is on your side? Me. I am. I always have been and I always will be. You mean everything to me. When you’re not good I’m not good either. When you’re down I’m down right there with you. You won’t ever have to go through whatever happens alone. You have me, and you have Jason, and you can always count on us. You know I love you, Sonny,” Carly smiled as she took his hand.
“I know I haven’t shown it all the time, and I don’t tell you enough, and Lord knows I’m not the perfect husband, but you know what? I love you too Carly. You and the kids mean everything to me. I don’t know what I would do if I ever lost you. You just took them away from me and I had no choice and I got so mad…”
“But you know you can’t stop taking your medicine because you’re mad at me. Talk to me. I may not listen at first but I always calm down. You know how I feel about you. There is no one but you. No one.”
Sonny looked her in the eyes. “You don’t know what you..what this… means to me. I won’t forget it.”
Carly squeezed his hand. “You know what, it’s going to be okay. We’re the same, you and I. I just prefer my mouth as my own personal weapon,” she laughed, causing him to break out into a dimpled smile for the first time since she’d seen him.
“Mr. Corinthos?” The doctor knocked before entering. “I don’t think I’m going to admit you. But I’ve readjusted your medication to build you back up to where you were. And of course you know we’re going to have to do blood tests, that kind of stuff, but we’re going to have to play it smart from here on out. You know when you’re in trouble; I won’t lecture you about taking your medication. You did the right thing coming here today and that’s the most important thing of all. Good luck, you have my number if you need anything.” He shook Sonny and Carly’s hands then handed Sonny his medication and work orders then left the room.
“You ready to call it a day?”
“Already? It’s not even noon,” Sonny complained as he rubbed his eyes.
“Come on, let’s go get your medication, then we’ll take a nap. I’ll lie down with you. My mom has the boys. We’ll be okay. We’re in this together. You jump I jump, remember?”
Sonny looked at her before kissing her softly on the lips. It wasn’t a romantic kiss, but it was one made by love none the same. They would be together again one day, he smiled to himself. He didn’t know when or how or where but they always kept finding their way back together. He was too tired to put up a fight as Carly led him by the hand and took him to her car, but he knew he was a man of his word; when he said he wanted something done, he got it, by any means necessary. So Carly had better look out- he was on his way up.
