“Why don’t you love me?” Sue Ellen pleaded, as she kneeled down before her husband, while he looked the other way. “I’ve done everything I can for you, I’ve lied, I’ve borne your child, I’ve begged, I’ve given up alcohol, I’ve changed my hair and my clothes, I’ve given up Dusty…what will it take for you to love me again?”
“Get up Sue Ellen…show some dignity,” JR dragged her by the arm until she stood facing him.
“Do you even know me at all JR? I’m a beauty queen who could have had her choice of any man in the state, but I chose you. You forget that, but I think you need a reminder of that every now and then.”
“That’s funny because your last choice of man was a man who couldn’t even satisfy you when it counts,” JR scoffed.
“Don’t you dare talk about Dusty that way! You aren’t fit to shine his shoes,” Sue Ellen yelled.
He grabbed her arm. “Don’t you use that tone of voice with me!”
“No, JR. It is you who should watch their tone of voice with me. Not only am I a beauty but I have smarts, but you couldn’t tell by the choices I have made by staying with you. I am the laughing stock of Texas but I tolerate it because I choose to be your wife. I have stood by you through death, threats, lying, cheating, blackmail, and worse. You’ve made many mistakes but do you know what your biggest mistake was?”
JR was intrigued. “And what would that be?”
“You’ve mistaken me for a fool. You’ve confused love for stupidity. You wouldn’t recognize love if it walked up and slapped you in the face, which I think would do you a world of good.” Sue Ellen raised her hand, and JR blinked.
“Well, are you going to hit me or not?” he asked.
She smiled. “No, I don’t think so, but Lord knows you have it coming. You have a lot coming to you, but you won’t get it. You never do. You think just because you are JR Ewing you can treat me like you do your business associates, but I won’t have that anymore. Do your business associates do this?” She slipped her dress down, revealing only her slip.
JR’s eyes widened, and he was more than a little intrigued to say the least.
“You know in the bedroom I can offer you whatever you want, but you deny me my marital privileges, and you look elsewhere. As you can see with your own eyes, I am all woman JR. There is nothing that those tramps give you that I would deny you. I could satisfy your every need if only you’d let me. I’m every woman JR, and you are either too blind or too stupid to see it. And I know no one has ever accused JR Ewing of being a stupid man before.”
“Sugar,” JR started, “What’s gotten into you? You’ve never talked to me like this before.”
“I know, and that’s the problem. I’m tired, and I’ve had enough. You may not like Dusty, but he showed me what it’s like to be loved, really loved. I’m going to give you one last chance to straighten up, or you can bet Ewing Oil that I’m going to run back to Dusty faster than you can drop your hat. Do we have an understanding?”
JR thought about it for a second, and he realized all he had to lose. He knew that Sue Ellen meant business, and he saw her walking away for that saddle tramp Farlow, and he didn’t like it. Not one bit. She was his woman, and no one was going to take her away from him. It would take some changing on his part, but he would make his marriage work, no matter what it took.
He walked over and kissed her as passionately as he could, the way he knew she could not resist. “Sue Ellen, you know how I feel about you, how I’ve always felt about you. How I’ve always felt about you. I know I’m not good about showing it, but all that’s going to change. I’m going to make my family a priority, starting today. I know you’ve heard it all before; what do you say you let me show you how I feel?”
She smiled. It wasn’t enough to make up for all the years of being left alone, but it was a very good start.
The end
