Sue Ellen couldn’t believe the situation she was in. JR had been shot, and it was her fault. Her blasted sister had pulled the trigger, trying to kill him, and she darn near succeeded. Sue Ellen had come so close to losing him, and she’d never realized how much she loved her husband. It was funny, she heard herself thinking those three little words, and she hated herself for it. She’d sworn she would never let her guard down around him again, but she couldn’t help it. She loved JR. She loved everything about him, from his wicked laugh to his blue eyes to the way he threw her down to make love to her to the way he drove her wild with anger. She was addicted, and she couldn’t help herself. He left her always wanting more, and this time, there was no turning back.
What would he say if he knew she felt this way? Would he push her away, or would he welcome her into his arms? JR was a proud man, and he didn’t like or respect signs of weakness. And that’s what this was. Her love for him was a weakness, one that she hated herself. But after coming so close to losing him, she didn’t care anymore. She didn’t have anything else to lose. She almost lost the only man she ever loved. What was the worst that could happen? Would he laugh in her face and call her a fool? He’d done that for years, and that never stopped her for coming back for more. No, Sue Ellen would face her fears and admit to him what she should have said all along- that she was in love with her husband.
So she knocked on his bedroom door, not really waiting for his reply.
“Sue Ellen, what’s gotten into you? You could have given me a chance to tell you to come in at least,” JR replied impatiently as he fixed his tie.
She walked over there and straightened it for him. Before him she had no idea how to work one, but now she was an expert.
“Is there something you need or do you make a habit to just barge in on people when they dress?”
He wasn’t making this easy on her. Sue Ellen was tempted to turn around and cut her losses while she still had her pride.
“JR, we need to talk.”
“Can it wait; I need to see my daddy in a few minutes.”
“No, it can’t wait.”
“You’re not pregnant are you? We’re not going to have another fiasco like we did with John Ross?”
“JR will you shut your trap and listen to me for five minutes?”
Amused, he turned around and faced her with a smile on her face. He wouldn’t admit it, but he always loved it when she stood up to him. It kind of turned him on.
“JR, I’ve been doing some thinking. I would really like to work on us. I have missed us.”
“Sue have you been dipping in the booze again?”
“Will you listen to me for once? You know this isn’t easy for me! I’ve been doing a lot of thinking and I’ve realized that I do love you JR.”
He raised his eyebrow. “You do?” It was more of a statement than a question. “What brought this on?”
“Well I have to admit it was when I thought I had lost you, it did scare me. I haven’t been able to think about anything else. I realized that I didn’t want to lose you. You and John Ross are the most important things in the world to me. I know I haven’t been the best wife to you, but I would like to change things. I would like for us to make a fresh start. Just the three of us. I believe we can be a family, a real family. I want to show you how I feel about you. You do make me happy, JR, and it’s time I told you so.”
JR started to say something, but thought better of it. Instead, he put his cane down and reached over and pulled his wife close to him. “You do make me happy too. I can’t really show it to you the way I’d like to, but maybe my word would have to do.”
Sue Ellen smiled. “I believe you, JR. I really do.”
He wrapped his arms around her waist. “You and me-aren’t we something. Let’s give those old Texas wife friends of yours something to talk about. Would you like that?”
She laughed. “I think we already have.”
He pulled her in for a kiss, their first real kiss in a long time. They both knew this time would be different. They didn’t know how, but it would. And that kiss would be a good place to start.
The end
