Home again: a gone with the wind one shot
For: my friend Jessie I hope you like it.
Pairing: Scarlett/Rhett
Setting: According to the movie version. Rhett has left Scarlett and she has returned to Tara.
Scarlett awoke from her nightmare, or at least she thought she had, as she opened her eyes and realized where she was. Tara. Home at last. It had been a long, terrible, painful road to get her there, but she was where she belonged, and in her heart, she knew that this was the only place she could be right now. After losing everything that had ever mattered to her- Bonnie, Melly, Ashley, and most importantly, Rhett, she knew that she had to find her courage again. Ashley was a fool most of the time, and she hated herself for throwing away her life for a fool, but he had been right about one thing. She did draw her strength from Tara, and that was the one thing she had loved more than any one man. God knew she hoped he was right, because she didn’t think she could love anything more than Rhett Butler.
Rhett. She could curse the day she’d ever laid eyes on that varmit. There was no other word for him. He was the darkest, most wicked, most scandalous man Scarlett had ever met. And yet she had married him anyways. True, she had married him for the money, mostly. And it wasn’t his picture she looked at every night before she went to sleep. But he was the only man whose touch sent her into places she had never imagined were possible. She didn’t know who she hated more-him for doing them to her or her for secretly wanting more. But no, being a so called lady she pushed them away, pining away for the one man she couldn’t have.
But even Rhett tried to understand. He really did. He, unlike Ashley, was no fool. He knew what he was getting into, and he wanted her anyways. Scarlett had pitied Rhett at times, wondering why he felt that way about her when he knew it was another man she loved. But Rhett Butler was not a man to be pitied. He constantly challenged her, demanded her time and attention, questioned her intellect, wounded her pride, and even though he didn’t’ say it, he wanted the one thing from her that she couldn’t give him- her heart. Scarlett could call Ashley Wilkes or Melly a fool all she wanted until her heart was content, but in reality she knew who the title really belonged to-herself.
All of her life she had taught to live by the rules, not that she really cared. Then the war came and changed everything. She met Rhett Butler and they played by their own rules. They lived as they wanted, happily and greedily, and even then it all changed when Bonnie came along. Bonnie. Scarlett hadn’t even begun to process what Bonnie had brought to her life. As much as Scarlett loved her-and contrary to what society and Rhett had thought- there was no doubt that she was the apple of Rhett’s eye. No one, not even Scarlett, could compete whenever Bonnie was around. And then she was gone.
Rhett had told Scarlett that without Bonnie there was no chance for them again. As Scarlett stepped outside on the steps of Tara and breathed in the fresh morning air, she suddenly realized that she knew that Rhett was lying. Just as Tara was the great love of her life, she was the love of Rhett’s. They couldn’t help themselves. There was nothing like home to make you feel like yourself again, and that’s what Rhett and Scarlett were to each other. They were familiar, in each other’s blood. Just as she always went home to Tara whenever her world fell apart, Rhett would return to her whenever he needed safety or peace of mind or whenever he couldn’t find whatever it was he was looking for in the world he was living in. He would be back. Sure as she was standing there on her family plantation, he would be back. She would live another day to see it.
