Hero
Scarlett/Ashley
Ashley knew he had to get back. He’d been held prisoner for a very long time and was tired. The only thing that kept him going was knowing that he’d had a wife that loved him so very much waiting for him back home. Home. He didn’t even know if that waited for him. That was the only thing he loved once as much as he loved Scarlett. A man could only have one true love in his life, and during his time in captivity, he knew he had found her in his raven haired wife. For the first time in his life he knew what it was like to love someone other than his self; he’d gotten out of his head and his dreams. Oh he still dreamed, but they were other than his books and the war.
Scarlett had taught him what it was like to get out of his head, and into his heart. True, they had only been married for two days before he had left for war, but those two days were unlike anything he had ever dreamed of in his life. They were full of passion, full of desire, full of life. She had captured his imagination and his soul unlike anything he had dared himself to dream of before. He had been afraid to live before- he had seen that now. Life had new meaning- Ashley saw what it was like to be someone in someone else’s eyes. Yes, he was officially declared a war hero, but all of the medals in the world meant nothing to know that he was a hero in his wife’s eyes.
They had locked themselves in their room for the entire two days after their marriage. It was Scarlett’s idea, he chuckled to himself. It wasn’t t very ladylike, but he had long suspected that she wasn’t as keen on tradition as she had let on. It started when she feigned a headache and had made her excuses to skip out on their celebration. Then she had sent for Mammy to fetch her new husband. Mammy rolled her eyes as she did get him, but he went and Scarlett locked the door. For someone who was supposedly ill she sure did not look sick. Wearing her best evening wear, in the middle of the afternoon, it was all Ashley could do to resist her. And after a few kisses from Scarlett and a few glances with those emerald eyes of hers, he found that he couldn’t. Ashley apologized to his guests and explained that he needed to take care of Scarlett, and take care of her he did. Shy and timid at first, after the second time Scarlett found that she enjoyed her wifely duties, and found that it wouldn’t be as bad as Mrs. Meriweather had warned her it would be. Why, she might even enjoy it after all! Imagine that!
They had locked themselves in their room for two whole days, up until the time he had to leave. Scarlett was so upset he forbade her to leave to see him off. But he was thankful for those wonderful memories to see him off. They got him through the darkest days of his life. As he made his way down the path in Atlanta, he was stunned to see a sight he thought he would never see- Scarlett sitting on the porch with a little girl. He wondered whose it was. Maybe she had taken in a family to make ends meet.
Finally he made his way to the porch. “Aren’t you going to greet a returning warrior?” Ashley smiled.
“Ashley? Oh Ashley?” Scarlett teared up. “I thought I would never see you again. You’re here. Oh Elizabeth.. look who’s here. Daddy’s home. He’s really home,” she said, picking up her daughter.
“Daddy?” he was confused.
“Yes..you and I have a daughter. Aren’t you happy? I couldn’t believe it myself. I had no way to get ahold of you. I didn’t know if you were coming home…she was all I had of you. And now we’re a family, a real family.”
He smiled, not wanting to get close to his family quite yet. It was definitely better than all of his dreams put together. He never thought he would live to see this day. He had a sinking feeling that bad news awaited him, but it could wait a few more minutes. Right now he wanted to take this feeling in for as long as he could. Life wasn’t exactly fair, but right now it was what it should be.
