Set in Dark Imaginings
Sam felt old. Having this hernia meant that he couldn’t do things that he couldn’t do before, or so he thought. Worst of all, it meant he lost some of his sexual appeal. Who would want an old man now? He’d always prided himself on his sexual prowess and now that was about to change. Worst of all, Diane had rejected him. Having a roommate had gotten his mind off of things but now his roommate had been discharged and now he was all alone, alone in his thoughts. He wanted the company of a woman, and not just any woman. He wanted Diane, the sparks were still there .
Diane. As much as he tried to deny it, as much as he protested it, as much as he said otherwise, deep down he knew that he was still in love with her. There was just no getting over the blonde barmaid as hard as he tried. Not that he would ever admit that to her. She would just laugh in his face, or worse yet, tell him that she didn’t feel the same way about him, and he would never be able to show his face at Cheers again. She would gloat, and he would never hear the end of it. No, it was better that he keep his feelings to himself than to risk rejection.
Speaking of the devil, at that moment in walked Diane. Trying to cover the fact that he was thinking of her, Sam thought quickly.
“What’s the matter, slow day at Cheers?”
“No silly, I came by to see you. Don’t you want me to visit you?” Diane asked.
“You can if you want to. I have no opinion whether or not you visit me.”
“Well if you don’t care then maybe I should leave. I don’t want to waste your time or mine.”
“No, stay.”
“You said you don’t want me to stay…”
“Please stay. I want you to stay,” Sam asked.
“That’s better,” Diane smiled. “How are you feeling?”
“Oh I’m ready to go back to work but the doctors won’t release me. They say something about me needing to take it easy for a few more days. What do they know?”
“The doctors are very intelligent, Sam. I think you should take it easy.”
“Instead of playing doctor I think you should try playing nurse. You could close the curtain and sit on the side of my bed,” Sam smiled.
“Oh you’re naughty,” Diane scolded.
“Seriously, Diane, if I tell you something, will you promise not to throw it in my face?”
Sensing how serious he was, Diane nodded. “Of course.”
“I want to thank you for coming down here every day to see me. It gets a little boring and I know you don’t have to do this; I know you only do it because you care,” Sam looked away.
She was taken aback. She thought of all the times she’d fought with him to get serious and here he was, being sincere. “I do care Sam. More than you know.”
“What would happen if I told you that I care too?”
“Are you suggesting that we get back together?”
Sam looked at her and nearly choked on his words. “I can’t believe I’m saying this but yes. Yes I am.”
“Oh Sam. I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time. I think that we should tread carefully but I would love to get back together with you. We can get this right this time, I know we can. We can channel the fighting into the passion that is the trademark of our relationship. Let’s do this Sam. Let’s make this work,” Diane cried.
“I want to make this work too. I can’t promise that I’ll change, I can’t promise that we won’t fight, but I promise that I’ll be the best boyfriend that I can be.”
And so they entered into another stage of their relationship. They still fought, they wouldn’t be Sam and Diane if they didn’t. But this time they used their fighting as an opportunity to talk and grow closer and they built bridges that hadn’t been there before. They worked at it, and realized they finally found something worth fighting for, literally and figuratively.
