song is by Lady antebellum Need you now
“I brought home some Big Macs and french fries for dinner,” Reid declared proudly as he let himself into Luke’s apartment.
“Mister man, I told you I was preparing a nice pasta salad for dinner,”Luke exclaimed. If this was the first time Reid had done this he wouldn’t be upset but it was happening more and more often.
“Okay Okay it’s not a big deal, I’m sure I’ll have some room for some of your pasta after I’m done. McDonalds doesn’t usually fill me up anyways,” Reid tried to pacify Luke but to no avail.
“Then why do you go there knowing that? You’re hurting your health not to mention wasting money when we agreed that you were going to start eating at home.”
“You agreed. I didn’t say anything. I can’t help it if I like eating out and like my junk food. I’m not hurting anybody but myself so I say you need to back off Luke.”
“So now you’re giving me orders?” Luke was getting very upset. This evening was getting out of hand quickly.
“You were the one wanting to change me by making me eat those what are they…Kumquats? What the heck is a Kumquat? How do you spell them anyways? If you can’t spell them then you shouldn’t be eatting them. See you’re trying to change me and I can’t stand that. I never thought you’d be the one to try to change me. I can’t deal with this. I have so much pressure at work to be the best doctor I can be , I work on my bedside manner. Do you know how hard it is to be the last person someone sees before they die? Or to hold the hand of a burn victum who’s been disfigured who may never have their looks again and I have to tell them it will be okay? And now I have to come home and be told that I have to be told that I have to be someone other than I am? Sorry but I need some fresh air.”
Reid left . When he left his McDonald’s bag there, Luke wondered if he hadn’t made the mistake of his life.

It had been two days since Luke and Reid had spoken. It was times like that that Luke wished he could talk to his mother, but Lily didn’t understand. He’d never felt so alone. So he went back to his place and waited for Reid to call. Waited for anything, for him to arrive. For a sign. It was so bad Luke went out and got two Big Macs just waiting, knowing that Reid would be home soon.
Picture perfect memories
Scattered all around the floor
Reaching for the phone 'cause
I can't fight it anymore
He dug out all their pictures and lay them out by the phone, willing Reid to call. Come on, Reid. Not a single ring.
It's a quarter after one
I'm all alone
And I need you now
Said I wouldn't call
But I've lost all control
And I need you now
And so he fell asleep there by the phone, waiting for a call that might never come.
Meanwhile it was Reid across town doing the same thing, waiting for Luke to call him . Luke had never taken no for an answer before, so why had he not called him? Why would he not call him? Reid had the next forty-eight hours off so he had imbibed a little. It was no fun being home and drunk without Luke there with him to yell at him. He realized then that Luke got after him becase he loved him. There had to be a happy medium. He would make this work, no matter what.
It's a quarter after one
I'm a little drunk
And I need you now
Said I wouldn't call
But I've lost all control
And I need you now
So Reid picked up the phone and Luke answered it on the first try.
“I’m sorry,” Reid said.
“Me too.”
“I love you.”
“Me too.”
Finally Luke asked him if he wanted to come over.
“I do but I can’t. I’ve had a little to drink. Go ahead and yell at me.”
“Reid why would I yell at you? You were honest and you made the choice not to drive when you’ve been drinking. I’m proud of you.”
“You are?” Reid asked, shocked.
“I don’t tell you that enough. Maybe that’s part of our problem. But youre one heck of a guy and I’m proud that you’re my man.:
“Luke… I’m proud of you too.”
And so they reached an understanding in their relationship and vowed to stop taking each other for granted. They both turned a blind eye to some of the little quirks that drove each other nuts but didn’t let the big stuff go, but in the end, were quite the happy pair after all.
