A/N: Lyrics in italics are to Garth Brooks Friends in Low Places, to which this story is set
JR couldn’t believe this day was happening. Today was the day Sue Ellen, his beloved Sue Ellen, was marrying Don and he had no one to blame but himself. Today they were at the Hilton Hotel getting ready to exchange their vows and he was all alone, as usual, already half liquored up and it wasn’t even five o’clock yet. And he was just getting started. It was going to be a long night. His daddy would frown upon him drinking alone the way he was but what else could he do? It wasn’t as if he could go crashing the wedding party… or could he?
JR looked at his watch and knew he didn’t have much time. What was he going to do? Stop the wedding? It was probably too late for that. And she wouldn’t have him anyways even if he did pour his heart out to her. As much as it pained him to admit it Sue Ellen seemed happy with the English guy, but that never stopped JR before. Sometimes Sue Ellen just didn’t know what was good for her until someone spelled it out for her.
Should he change into a tuxedo? Did he have that much time? He poured himself another glass of bourbon as he called for a limo. There was no way he was driving with as much he’d had to drink and he figured if you’re going to crash a wedding why not do it in style? The hell with tradition, he thought looking at his suit. He never was one for tradition, and how traditional was it to break up one’s wedding? No, JR laughed, Don had bigger things to worry about than a breach of ettiqute. So he went with what he had on and finished up his drink and waited for his driver to arrive.
Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one
You thought you'd see there
Once he got there he made his way in past security by offering them a few bucks, nothing the Ewing name couldn’t buy. He got in just in time to see Sue Ellen pledging her vows and the minister pronouncing them husband and wife. This was it. JR couldn’t believe it. He was sick to his stomach. It was too late for them.It was over, it was really over. Sue Ellen would never be his again.
As he got up he decided to follow the crowds. This should be one interesting reception. Lots of booze, and a chance to make Sue Ellen squirm, why, he wouldn’t miss it for anything in the world, he laughed.
.
He went up to the open bar and got himself a bourbon when he bumped into Sue Ellen.
“Oh are you here for the same reason I am?” JR asked. “Is married life that bad already?”
“Oh shut up JR. what are you doing here? I did not invite you for a reason,” Sue Ellen glared at him.
“Yes, and that was because it would make it harder for you to get through your vows.”
“JR you’re crazy.”
“Come on now Sugar, don’t tell me you didn’t see my face as you stood up there reciting those vows. I’ll bet you anything you did and you just won’t admit it. “
“JR you can’t talk to me like that anymore. I’m a married woman- a happily married woman- and you gave up the right to talk like that to me a long time ago,” Sue Ellen glared at him, looking around at the crowd that had formed around them. Now if you’ll excuse me I have a dance to attend to.”
So as JR had to watch Sue Ellen and Don dance their first dance he thought that he would die. This was awful. Not as watching what came next. While those two were dancing servers brought around a glass pf champagne for everyone, non-alcoholic for Sue Ellen. After Don and Sue Ellen went to their seats Don stood and lifted his glass and everyone grew quiet.
“Sue Ellen, my bride, my love…you have changed my life. Before meeting you I never thought that I could find love again but you showed me that it was possible. You’ve made me a new man. You’ve given me…”
Just then JR stood up and walked across the room and took the glass of champagne out of Don’s hand. “Sugar I’ve got to hand it to you. You can really pick em. When you went for Barnes I thought you were scrapping the barrel. When you went for your boy toy okay she’s going through a phase. Then there was the rodeo man. But here you are. You want me to be happy for you. Well we’re through and I am not complaining!”
JR lifted up the glass and drank it down and smiled and the two, leaving them completely speechless. JR went out to his driver and decided to make a night of it, knowing that he had completely fooled Sue Ellen of how he really felt. She had his heart, she always would, but she would never be able to stomp on it for all the world to see.
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said, honey, we may be through
But you'll never hear me complain
Suddenly he heard a pounding on the limo.
“JR.”
“Sugar..”
“Open up.”
“What are you doing in here? Isn’t your husband going to be looking for you?”
“I told him I needed a minute. What the heck just happened in there?” Sue Ellen demanded.
“I don’t know what you mean?”
“Yes you do. You had a great old time in there at my expense and I want to know why.”
“Well it was more at his expense but yes I admit it was a great time….”
“JR!”
“Sugar, I didn’t want to lose you. Watching you marry him really burned me up. I realized then what a fool I’ve been. And how sorry I am for everything that’s happened between us,” JR said.
“That’s nice but you know it doesn’t change anything.”
“I know it doesn’t. And I don’t have anyone to blame but myself. And I thought that if I could hurt you today than I wouldn’t be all alone in the hurt I feel today.”
Sue Ellen looked at him and softened. There was the boy that she fell in love with, the one who would open up to her, the one who would be real for once. That was the man she’d been in love with- a lifetime ago. “JR I loved you. I always loved you and I always will. But you’ve hurt me and I’ve hurt you and we’ve hurt each other too many times to count. I had to let you go or I would go crazy. I’m sorry JR but I’ve moved on. I had hoped you had done the same.”
“Does he make you happy?”
“He does.”
“Not as happy as I did,” JR smiled in spite of himself.
“JR!” And before they knew it they both found themselves laughing, knowing that Sue Ellen had changed and JR probably never would. But they’d come to a place where they knew where they would always love each other, where no one could take that away from either of them. And as one love story ended, in a way a new one began, for they learned how to compromise, to listen, to share and to respect each each other. JR swore he could still feel the passion simmering beneath the surface but there wasn’t much he could do about that except bide his time. When her husband messed up-and he would- JR would be there to pick up the pieces. He would do things right next time. Next time.
The end
