JR sat at the Cattleman’s Club, thinking about everything that had had happened between himself and Sue Ellen. They were divorced and she was living in her own place, having gained custody of John Ross after a bitter fight. This was a terrible day for him- it was his and Sue Ellen’s anniversary. Inside his car was a copy of her pageant, the first time he’d laid eyes on her, the day he knew he had to have her. She was so innocent then. What had happened to her? He didn’t have to ask. He had happened to her. He d destroyed her innocence and her childlike faith in the world. She was gone now, and he had no one to blame but himself.
JR prided himself on being a man on top of the world, but right now he was making enemies faster than he was making money. That was nothing new to him. He could have his choice of any women in Dallas; hell, he had half of them while he was married. That was his problem. He couldn’t stay faithful but he couldn’t forget about his true love. Yet he couldn’t walk away from her the way a smart man would have. Sue Ellen wasn’t perfect. She’d had her share of indiscretions as wall. She was stubborn and proud and difficult to live with. But she was the one thing that he couldn’t live without.
Why did JR want her back? Was it because he couldn’t have her? He had to admit that would have been his motive in the past. But this was now, and he’d realized that he had too much to lose by giving up now. There was Sue Ellen, John Ross, his father’s pride- all of the things that mattered most in the world to him. He couldn’t stop now. Why couldn’t he think of these things before? What in the world was wrong with him? He was not a man prone to bits of self-reflection but he knew that he was on a path of self-destruction, taking down the ones he loved the most. And that included Sue Ellen. It was no wonder she left him. But it couldn’t be too late for them. It would never be too late.
“Sugar… I was calling to say I’m coming over. And I wanted to wish you a happy anniversary…..”
