Warning: This contains a sensitive subject and is sad but has a happy ending
Sue Ellen woke up, excited. This was a day she had been dreaming of for a long time. She and JR were going to have a baby, their second child. All she knew was that she couldn’t wait to tell him. They had been getting along lately, although this was a miracle child. John Ross was five years old, and she had figured this was their last chance for a child. Maybe this would be the daughter she had always wanted. Would JR love it if it were a girl? She knew how proud he was of his son, and wanted to carry on the family tradition of bearing boys save for the exception of Lucy. Maybe he would love a daughter as much as she would, time would tell. They had gone through a rough spell and their lovemaking sessions were far and few between. This was another reason this was her miracle child. Thankfully there would be no questioning of this child’s paternity. Not unless JR was the heartless rat he had once been. She didn’t think so anyway.
How would she tell him? Maybe after dinner. This should be an intimate occasion. Part of her wanted to tell him in front of everyone, she knew everyone would be thrilled. Bobby and Miss Ellie would be so happy. But this was the kind of news Sue Ellen wanted to share with her husband alone. But how to do it? Maybe she would light a few candles and break it to him gently once he got home.
The anticipation was killing her. The doctor said that she was two months along, which figured right into her timing. She would never forget that night. It had started out with a fight. JR had come home late, which she confronted him in front of the family. JR hated being humiliated and he dragged her upstairs. He grabbed her and she resisted. He responded by pulling her into a kiss and the next thing she knew she had melted into his arms. It was hard to say no to the charms of JR Ewing. That was the thing about their marriage. It was full of ups and downs but also the passion, oh the passion. It was enough to drive a woman out of her mind. But that night they had done something more than drive each other crazy: they had created a baby.
It was midnight and JR still wasn’t home. Sue Ellen was beyond worried, she was furious. How dare he ruin this special night? This was a night years in the making and now he had gone and blown it. Typical JR, only thinking of himself. She was going to have it.
At one in the morning he casually came strolling in.
“Hi Sugar, you still up?”
“Yes JR. Some of us have been waiting for you. You mind telling me where you’ve been?”
“Been at the office. Had a long day,” JR answered.
“That’s funny because Bobby was home at six,” Sue Ellen replied sarcastically.
“Sue Ellen you shouldn’t have waited up for me. You look a little peaked. You should have gone to bed. You know I keep long hours.”
“I know you do. You’d think I’d be used to it by now. Which tramp were you with tonight?”
“I swear to you I wasn’t with anyone. I wouldn’t do that to you, not after everything we’ve been through.”
“Save it JR. I’ve had enough. I’m leaving.” Suddenly she felt a sharp pain, the likes of which she had never felt before.
“Sue, what’s wrong?”
“I don’t feel so well. I’m hurting JR. I need to go to the hospital. This is all your fault. If I lose my baby I’ll never forgive you…”
JR was stunned. Her baby? He had no idea she was pregnant. If he had he never would have stayed out so late. Sue Ellen and John Ross were his world and he never would do anything to jeopardize her safety or the life of his unborn child.
“Come on Sugar, let’s get going. We can sort this all out later. I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.”
“JR can you promise me one thing?” Sue Ellen looked at him tearfully.
“Anything.”
“Don’t let anything happen to my baby.”
JR looked at her sadly. He knew this was one promise he couldn’t keep.
A few hours later the doctor took JR aside and delivered the bad news. Sue Ellen indeed lost her baby.
“Would you like me to tell her Mr. Ewing?”
Part of him wanted the doctor to, he was afraid Sue Ellen would hate him for telling her. “No doctor, you had better let me.”
JR went in her room. Sue Ellen looked so innocent. “Sugar, how are you feeling?”
“It hurts JR. I don’t know what’s happening.”
“I love you and I’m proud of you. I’ve always been proud of you.”
Sue Ellen began to cry. “Don’t tell me that. I don’t want to hear it…”
“I’m so sorry…”
She couldn’t stop herself. This was the worst news she ever heard. “Why is this happening to us? I know I’ve been many things, I haven’t been a perfect mom or wife but I’ve changed, I really have.”
“I know you have. You’re a good wife and mother. This baby would have been lucky to have you. I’m lucky to have you. You didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Then why JR?”
“Sometimes things happen.”
“Don’t’ say that.”
JR looked at her. “This is my fault.”
Sue Ellen stared at him.
“I’ve been such a lousy person and a lousy husband. I keep messing up everything I touch. And now my baby has to pay the price. I think you would be better off without me.” JR wiped the tears away from his face and he turned to walk away.
“JR wait!” Sue Ellen cried out.
He walked back.
“JR don’t leave me. I need you now more than I ever have. You may not be perfect but you’re all John Ross and I have. You are a changed man. I see it in the way you come home and have dinner with us. I see it in the way you hold me. I see it in the way you make love to me. I don’t know what I would do if I lost you. Please don’t go.”
By now both of them were crying. Mourning for what they had lost, mourning for the past and all of their mistakes, knowing that they had had so many chances. JR laid beside her in her bed and held her for the longest time.
It took a long time and neither of them ever truly healed but eventually they both went on with their lives. Four months later they began trying to conceive and in another two months they succeeded, and she gave birth to another son. He never took the place of their lost child but helped to fill the void. JR and Sue Ellen’s marriage wasn’t easy, but they knew they wouldn’t be where they were at if it weren’t for the bitter twist of fate.
