To my friend Jessie, I hope you like it. I had fun writing it
Nicholas Pearce was in the hospital overnight for observation. He had been assaulted by JR Ewing for messing with his wife Sue Ellen for the last time. JR hated Nicholas and was tired of seeing him around him. Nicholas loved Sue Ellen but wasn’t sure she was worth all the trouble. JR was a powerful man and Nicholas wasn’t sure he was worth all the trouble. He wasn’t hurt badly but he sure had a black eye and a few bruises. He didn’t think he needed to be hospitalized but the doctors insisted on keeping him. With all this time he had on his hands he knew he had some time to reevaluate his life and where it was heading.
Did he love Sue Ellen or did he just love the excitement? Sometimes he wondered. Sue Ellen was very exciting that much was certain. He had never met anyone like her. She challenged his every belief system. He had sworn that he would never get involved with a married woman but all of that had changed when he met her. She was beautiful, true, but she was vulnerable and intelligent, and something about her cried out “save me”. Nicholas Pearce was a gentleman and couldn’t resist helping out anyone least of all a beautiful woman.
He was lost in his thoughts when another beautiful woman walked in his room.
“Hi I’m Officer Roberts. I’m here to investigate the incident that occurred tonight.”
Nicholas couldn’t help but stare. Couldn’t they have sent out a male officer?
“Nothing happened really. Just your usual assault and battery.”
“That’s not what our witnesses say.”
“Well your witnesses were wrong.”
“Sir if you’re afraid of Mr. Ewing don’t be. We will have him arresting for tampering with a witness if he messes with you,” Officer Roberts said.
“I’m not worried about JR. I just don’t want to pursue the matter,” Nicholas said.
“If I can’t convince you to change your mind here can I talk to you about it over a cup of coffee in the cafeteria?” she asked.
He smiled. That might not be professional but this sure was intriguing.
“Sure I’d like that. Let me tell the nurse.”
So he told the nurse and they went down to the cafeteria.
“So Nicholas where are you from?”
“I’m from California. I’m 36, never been married. Thought I’d start a new life in Texas after a bad relationship.”
“You may call me Jessie if you like. It’s nice to meet you. Though I wish it could be under different circumstances.”
“Jessie if I didn’t know any better I’d say you were flirting with me.” Nicholas smiled.
Jessie blushed. “If I’m out of line please say so. I don’t want to make you feel uncomfortable.”
“No its refreshing to meet someone so open. It’s a nice change from the woman I was seeing. She was a little unsure of what she wanted.”
“Are you seeing her anymore? I’m sorry maybe its none of my business.” Jessie couldn’t help but feel a little jealous.
“No it ended. Not necessarily under the best of circumstances but I think we can be friends. How about you? A woman as pretty as you can’t be single,” Nicholas commented.
“No I’m divorced. We never had kids. I wanted them, he didn’t.”
“I’m sure you would have made a great mother.”
“How did a woman ever let you go?” Jessie blushed again. She was already falling for him and she didn’t even know him.
“Lets just say outside influences helped. I’d really like to see you again Jessie. How about Friday? That is if they let me out of here, “ he laughed.
“I’d like that.”
So they met on Friday and Jessie had the time of her life. It wasn’t like her to fall so fast but Nicholas was really charming. He held the door open for her and insisted on paying for everything. They soon began dating exclusively and he forgot about Sue Ellen. JR couldn’t have been any happier even though Sue Ellen was heartbroken. It wasn’t long before Jessie moved in with him and things went along better than planned. Soon Jessie discovered something that she wasn’t expecting: she was going to have his baby.
She was nervous about telling him. He was going to be coming home from work and she prepared a special meal. She made baby back ribs and miniature corn on the cob and baby carrots. She hoped he would take the hint. She couldn’t wait to see his reaction.
He came home and they sat at the table. They began to eat when she looked up at him.
“Do you like your meal?”
“Love it. It’s delicious as usual,” Nicholas commented.
“Do you notice anything different?” Jessie asked.
“I’m sorry I don’t.”
“Don’t you notice a theme?”
He thought about it for a minute. “Baby back ribs, baby carrots, miniature corn on the cob…. Jessie are you trying to tell me something?”
Jessie grinned.
“are you pregnant?”
She couldn’t speak. All she could do was nod.
He stood up and pulled her close to him. “This is the best news of my life. I’ve waited all my life for this. Do you know how happy you’ve made me?”
She laughed. “I was hoping you would think so!”
“I’m delirious! You really do make me happy. Of course this begs one question.”
She had a feeling what he was going to ask but she was afraid to get her hopes up.
He left for a minute and then came back with a box. He pulled out a diamond ring. “Jessie I’ve been meaning to ask this for a long time. Will you do me the honor of being my wife?”
“you’re sure? You’re not just asking me because of the baby?”
“I’ve had this in my room for a while. Of course I’m sure.”
She nodded. “Of course I will.”
So that fall they were wed in a lavish ceremony. They had a baby girl who they named Destiny because they believed that’s what brought them together. Their lives weren’t perfect, but it was better than what either of them planned.
