A/N: this is ultimately a JR/ SE fic thanks for reading
“What’s your name Darlin’?” JR asked as he poured himself a drink and offered her one.
“No thanks. My name is Melinda Smith.”
“What do you do?”
“I’m a college student. But I have great secretarial skills.”
“What I’m about to ask you is a bit unorthodox you could say. I would need you to keep things on the down low. But you would be rewarded handsomely. Can I trust you?”
“Yes sir. I mean it depends on what it is,” Melinda answered.
“I need you to go to work.”
“That doesn’t sound so bad. I could really use a job.”
“Not for me. For a guy named Don Lockwood. I would still be paying you as well as he would. Do you think you could handle that?” JR asked.
“Well that does sound a bit strange. But I would be glad to help out.”
“Good. Here is his number and I need you to start right away. And dress a little better than how you are. You know, dress like a lady. Reveal a little something.”
Melinda wasn’t sure she felt comfortable with this, but she could sure use the money. Tuition was high, and she two jobs sure would come in handy. Women flaunted themselves all the time, right?
JR pulled out a couple of thousand dollars and handed it to her. “Go on and pick yourself out a few new dresses. I’m sure you will be fine.”
She nodded. “Thank you sir.”
“Report back to me once you’ve started.”
“Yes sir,” Melinda replied.
“Go on now. That will be all.”
Melinda left. JR grinned wickedly. This would be all too easy. Melinda was pretty. There would be no way Don could resist her, and then Sue Ellen would be back in his arms where she belonged.

“Hello, what’s your name?” Don asked.
“Melinda Smith. Nice to meet you sir. Can I get you some coffee?”
Don looked at her for a minute. “That would be great. Do you take dictation?”
“Yes sir. I’m pretty good at it if I say so myself.”
“Very well then. We’ll begin in ten minutes.”
Melinda smiled. He wasn’t from around her. She was definitely interested. Wait she thought to herself. It wasn’t right to think of her boss that way. But she could have done worse to work for an unattractive boss.
After a few weeks things started to go smoothly. Don called her into his office.
“Melinda how is everything going here?”
“Wonderful Mr. Lockwood. I really love it here.”
“Please call me Don.”
She blushed in spite of herself. “Thank you Don.”
“Tell me a little more about yourself. Do you have a family?”
“Well my family lives back in Ohio and it’s just me. Right now I go to college.”
“Very good. What are you studying?”
“Business management,” Melinda answered.
“Wonderful. Maybe there’s a place for you in our company when you’re through,” Don responded.
“I hope so,” Melinda answered.
“I have noticed that you’ve been putting in a lot of long hours.”
She began to panic. “I hope you don’t mind. There’s a lot to do and I don’t want to leave anything undone.”
“Is there any other reason?”
She closed her eyes. “Well my tuition bill is awfully high and I was hoping to earn a little extra to pay it off.”
“Well you’re a hard worker and I know you can be trusted.”
“Thank you sir…Don,” Melinda smiled.
“Melinda… would you like to go out for a drink after work tonight?”
This was the moment she was waiting for. “I’d love to.”
“Great. Meet me at Harvey’s at six. What you’re wearing is just fine.”
“Thank you. I’ll see you then.” She got up and excused herself.
She could barely concentrate for the rest of the day. She wondered what a guy like Don wanted with a girl like her. He didn’t know anything about her, but maybe he wanted to. This was all happening so fast, and she had JR Ewing to thank. She couldn’t tell him; maybe he would be disappointed that she was mixing business with pleasure.
“Sue Ellen, I’m sorry I can’t meet you tonight. Something has come up,” Don called her.
“Not again. I know we’ve been fighting but I was looking forward to tonight.”
“I’m sorry. I’ll call you later this week.”
They hung up, and Don felt bad for what he had done. He and Sue Ellen had been fighting, mostly over JR. She had been calling him a lot lately, supposedly over John Ross. But he knew that she was not over him, and never would be. He didn’t like feeling like second place. He didn’t know where things would lead but tonight he just wanted to clear his mind.
“Melinda I’m glad you could make it.”
“Thank you for having me.”
“What would you like to drink?”
“I’ll have a cosmopolitan.”
“I’ll have a scotch,” he ordered.
They both sat down and started talking. They realized they both had so much in common. Melinda had studied in London for a semester and Don liked Melinda’s favorite food, Mexican. They laughed a lot, something Don hadn’t done much of with Sue Ellen lately. When it was over he asked if he could kiss her good night.
“I thought you would never ask,” she smiled.
And soon she left, very happy with the way things turned out. When she went to pay her college bill the next week she was amazed to find out that it had been taken care of for her.
She into Don’s office. “I can’t let you do this you know.”
“Do what? Do my job?”
“You know what you did. You paid my tuition!”
“Consider it my privilege. I like to see young people further their education and I know how hard you work. The only thing I ask of you is that you go out with me again.”
Melinda smiled. “Of course I will. But I want to make it clear I am not going out of obligation but because I like you. I had a wonderful time with you and I really had wanted to see you again.”
“The feeling’s mutual. I’ll see you on Friday then?”
“On Friday.”
“Well get back to work before I report you to the boss.”
Don drove over to Sue Ellen’s and waited for her to answer. She was not altogether surprised to see him, they both knew what was coming. So they talked for a little while, and she cried, and they finally said their goodbyes. Neither of them had to say it: She was still in love with JR and always would be.
After a few weeks JR came by to pick up his son. “He’s not here right now JR. He’s at a swim meet.”
“Why didn’t you tell me this?”
“Because I wanted to talk to you. Won’t you come in?”
JR obliged, curious as what she had to say. She had a steak dinner ready, lit by candlelight, and sparkling water.
“Are you hungry JR?” she asked hopefully.
“I am now,” he smiled.
“I have some good news and bad news.”
“Why don’t you start with the bad news.”
“Don and I broke up.”
“Oh. I’m sorry,” he said as sincerely as he could. “What’s the good news?”
“Don and I broke up.”
JR smiled. “Does this mean…”
“Yes JR. It’s you. It’s been you all along. I’ve always loved you and I think that Don knew that. We both did even though neither of us wanted to admit it. I can’t get you out of my system no matter how hard I try. I want to make things work if you will give me your best. I won’t settle for anything less.”
So JR did what Sue Ellen said, and they worked on their relationship. A few months later they were married for the third time. It wasn’t perfect, but they wouldn’t be JR and Sue Ellen if they were. Sometimes love just needed a second chance- and then some.
