Jessie had had it with JR. She was sick and tired of being left alone night after night watching the kids while he was out doing God knows what. She had a feeling she knew, but she didn’t really want to know. This wasn’t what she signed up for when she got married. Everyone warned her but she didn’t listen. Her friends were disappointed in her, she could tell. She couldn’t stand all the pressure of being a Ewing. Miss Ellie was wonderful, and Bobby was lovely. But there were meetings and fund raisers and expectations of being JR’s wife that she didn’t think she could live up to. Sometimes she didn’t know if it was worth it.
Today she got the divorce papers. She asked the lawyer, Alan Hill, if she could go down and talk to him first. This wouldn’t be an easy conversation to have. How do you tell your husband of five years that you wanted a divorce? So many wasted years, so many wasted dreams. He just wasn’t the man she thought he was when she married him. She loved him and always would, but she just wanted better for herself.
So Jessie got in her BMW and drove over to Ewing Oil. She went past Sly and went into his office. JR was surprised to see her. He got off his phone and looked over at her.
“What can I do for you darlin’?”
“JR we need to talk.”
“Can’t it wait? I have an important meeting to go to in an hour and I can’t be late.”
“No JR. It can’t. That’s the problem. You always have meetings and you’re never home. You call them meetings and we both know what you’re really up to. I don’t know who but I think Marilee Stone is one of them,” Jessie accused.
“Marilee? There hasn’t been anything between us in years.”
“Whatever. It doesn’t matter. I just am tired. Tired of all the lies and the distance between us. Don’t’ you see what you’re doing to us?”
“I’m sorry darlin’. I didn’t realize that you were this unhappy,” JR said, taking off his Stetson. “Is there someone else?”
“There’s someone else. It’s Ewing Oil. As long as you work here I’ll always come second.”
“How about I take some time off. We can go anywhere in the world you like.”
Jessie looked at him. “Even Paris?”
“Even Paris. Mama’ll watch the kids. I promise I’ll do whatever it takes to make things work. I know I haven’t been perfect but you’ve been the best thing to happen to me in a long time. I love you Jessie and I promise to show you that from now on,” JR pulled her close to kiss her, the way he should have done a long time ago.
JR wasn’t perfect, but he was a far cry better than he used to be. He came home on time most of the time, and he remembered her birthday and their anniversary. They even took the trip to Paris that he promised her. They spent time like a real family, and that was all she ever wanted.
