It was the day of the wedding, and the music was starting, and Miss Ellie was no where to be found. Donna set down her flowers as matron of honor and she and Clayton took off to find her. The guests were confused, and Clayton told JR and Bobby he would handle this. Neither of them agreed, but they would listen. They knew that on this day their mama would listen to Clayton more than they would listen to him.
“Miss Ellie,” Donna called.
“Go away, I want to be alone.”
“Are you canceling the wedding? You know I won’t let that happen!” Clayton smiled forcefully.
“Miss Ellie let me come in, we’ll talk this in. I can help. I think I know what’s going on,” she whispered to Clayton.
Clayton walked downstairs where he would hold off the guests.
Miss Ellie held open the door. “I can’t go with this.”
“Miss Ellie, why in the world not? Is it because of the masectomny?”
Miss Ellie nodded. “We’ve had this conversation but it’s not the same thing. Tonight he’ll want to see and I’m frightened of what he might see… he might be expecting a whole woman and when he sees that I’m not, well then, he’ll be so disappointed. I’ve never given myself to another man but Jock since and this won’t be easy for me, and I couldn’t handle Clayton running out on me.”
“Now Miss Ellie. I don’t think you’re afraid of Clayton running out on you. You’re afraid of losing another good man. That’s why you brought Jock up. It’s okay to let yourself love another man. It’s okay to move on with your life. I believe Jock would want you to.”
“Do you really think so?”
“I do. And with such a strong man, who’s capable of protecting you and guiding you and looking after you, why I’d bet money that Jock sent him your way,” Donna smiled.
Miss Ellie finally smiled. “Do you think that Clayton will really accept me after all I’ve been through?”
“Honey if he can handle JR Ewing, a little old scar isn’t going to scare him off. You’ve talked about it, and he knows what to expect. Ray’s talked with him. It’s not going to be easy for the both of you but you’re in this together and I think you’re going to be just fine. It may be one of the most loving moments of your life,” Donna reassured her.
And they decided to go out and get the ceremony started. Feeling stronger than ever, partially due to her memories of Jock, Miss Ellie felt ready to go out and face the friends and family she had left behind. She found JR, who walked her down the aisle to give her away, and soon stood side by side by Clayton Farlow, her very soon to be husband. As she looked at him there were no fears, all doubts had been cast away by the kindness in his eyes and the strength of his hand.
Finally they made it through the ceremony. There wasn’t a dry eye among all of the women. Every woman there drew hope for their own futures or own marriages that somehow things might be better for them. If Miss Ellie could find happiness than maybe, somehow too, they could find happiness in their own life.
After a few slow dances and a sip of chamapagne, Miss Ellie cut the first slice of wedding cake. They stayed long enough to enjoy a piece, although they weren’t really hungry. After all, both Clayton and Ellie had other things on their mind, although no one would admit to it.
They caught their plane which flew them in five hours to North Carolina. They found a beach there that they could go to and unpacked at a bed and breakfast where there were only a few other customers. This was going to be fun.
“You came just in time.Dinner’s in about an hour,” smiled the clerk.
“Perfect. We’ll be down then. We might be a little late.” Clayton smiled.
Upstairs after getting unpacked both were nervous. Clayton knew what he would like to do and Miss Ellie knew what she would like to do but she couldn’t stand to be pushed away. The scarring was so bad, and she couldn’t blame him for running from her.
“Let’s lie down and talk shall we?” Clayton suggested.
Visibly relieved, Miss Ellie agreed.
They laid down, face to face, and talked for a long time. Miss Ellie had closed her eyes she was so comfortable. Clayton had placed his hand on her shirt and began to gently tug on it.
“May I?”
This was the moment of truth for her. This would be it, when she knew if he really loved her or if he found her a monster. Her womanhood, her very existence was in question, and she was being asked to share it with another human being. Dare she take this chance? This was her husband now after all.
Miss Ellie nodded. Nothing was said for a few minutes.
“My love, I believe you take my breath away.” And Clayton began to kiss her, leading into a session of lovemaking.
Miss Ellie realized that shed’ found herself a good man, one who would accept her for who she really was. And she would never let him go. Forget JR for a minute. This was about accepting her and her darkest secrets, and she shared that with another human being. And he welcomed her with open arms. She knew she had a love that would last a lifetime.
