I put this here because its about Gary but I could have put it in the Dallas fanfic section since it takes place at Southfork. I hope you like it Jessie.
It was the night Jessie was waiting for. She and JR had been dating for seven months, and she had never been happier. Everyone had warned her about him, but he had been nothing but a gentleman towards her. He’d brought her lavender roses- that was his trademark-, showered her with jewelry, and had treated her to lavish dinners. She wasn’t used to being treated this well by a gentleman before. She had to laugh. The words JR and gentleman weren’t thrown around casually too often, and that’s what he’d been with her. And tonight he said he had something important to tell her, and she had a feeling she knew what it was. Jessie had a sneaky suspicion he wanted to seal the deal as he would say. JR wanted to propose, and there was no doubt what her answer would be. She would love to be the next Mrs. Ewing. She held out her hand and pictured what it would look like with a big old rock on it. He would probably go all out, not that it mattered. She would be happy with a pop can lid she was so happy.
She arrived at the restaurant where JR was waiting for her.
“Darlin, you look beautiful as always. You sure do look like a lady,” JR said as he held out the chair for her.
“Any girl seen with you has got to look her best,” Jessie smile.
“With you it sure comes naturally.”
“JR you sure are a charmer.”
“What would you like to drink? Let me guess? White wine?”
“You know me so well.”
JR smiled in that devilish way he had about him. “Yes, I like to think I do.”
“This sure is a nice restaurant. It Is crowded here though.” Too crowded, Jessie thought. She was hoping for something a little more intimate for a proposal. Oh well, JR always liked a grand gesture.
It occurred to Jessie that he might put her ring in her drink so she excused herself. He did order white wine after all. When she came back she examined her drink carefully. No such luck.
“Is there something wrong darlin’?”
“No, nothing at all.”
They ordered their meals and sat in silence. Jessie noticed that JR seemed awfully nervous. This was a good sign. It was only a matter of time.
“Is there something wrong? You’ve hardly touched your steak.” Jessie observed.
“I never could put anything past you. As a matter of fact there is something I’d like to discuss with you. This won’t be easy. I’m no good with this kind of thing…”
Jessie smiled and shut her eyes.
“Jessie I’m seeing someone else.”
She opened her eyes. She couldn’t believe what she had heard. How could he do this to her? He’d made a total fool out of her. She’d thought she’d found the one she was going to spend the rest of her life with and he was busy fooling around. What was wrong with her? What was wrong with him?
“Jessie, it’s not you. It’s me…”
“How dare you. Don’t you dare give me the it’s not you speech! I know when I’m being dumped! You are the cruelest most callous man I’ve ever met. You’re a monster JR Ewing and I’m sorry I ever met you.”
“Jessie I know you need some time so don’t worry about staying on at Southfork. I’m going to stay away for a few days until this all dies down. I’m really sorry.”
“I’ll bet you are!” Jessie stood up and threw her glass of wine at him.
Jessie drove around for awhile until she realized she didn’t have anywhere to go. She pulled up at Southfork, crying the entire time. The first thing she did was walk over and pour herself the stiffest drink she could get. She was startled to find JR’s brother Gary reaching over to pour himself a drink.
“Oh!” she exclaimed.
“I didn’t think anyone was around. Did I startle you?”
“Yes you did. I thought everyone was asleep.”
“Gary it may not be my place but I don’t think you should be doing this.”
“You would be too if you were in my shoes.”
“What’s the matter?”
“It’s mine and Val’s anniversary. The problem is she doesn’t want to celebrate. She doesn’t want to celebrate anything but our divorce.”
“I’m sorry Gary. I know that break ups are tough. Believe me I know,” Jessie sympathized.
“What’s the matter, did my brother hurt you?”
“You could say that.”
“Do you want me to put a hit on him? I have the resources.”
Jessie stared at him.
“I’m kidding. I don’t have the resources.”
Jessie looked at Gary for a minute longer before they both broke into laughter.
“Come on Jessie lets go sit by the pool.”
She followed him, both of them forgetting about their need for a drink.
“I’m sorry for how my brother treated you. I tried to warn you,” Gary said.
“Yes you did. Everyone did. It’s my own fault. I always listen to my heart and not my head. It always gets me in trouble.”
“I know the feeling. I’ve gotten myself in a few jams myself that way.”
“When will it ever end? I’m so tired of being hurt,” Jessie sighed.
“It’s better to have loved and lost than to never have loved at all.”
“Do you really believe that?” Jessie asked.
“I do. I believe in love and everything that comes with it. I wouldn’t miss out on everything for all the money in the world,” Gary smiled.
“You know…” Jessie stopped herself.
“What?” Gary asked gently.
“Nothing. You would just laugh.”
“Try me. I can be pretty understanding or so I’ve been told.”
“You might think this is silly but I was going to say it’s a shame I didn’t meet you first.”
Gary smiled. “Why would I think that’s silly? You’re kind, soft hearted, you don’t have a mean bone in your body, not to mention you’re drop dead gorgeous…”
“Now I can tell you’re JR’s brother- you’re a sweet talker just like him,” Jessie laughed.
“What would it take to prove to you that I’m serious?”
Jessie raised her eyebrows. “You’re serious!”
He nodded. “I like you. I’m sick to death of watching JR throw away women like you while guys like me don’t’ get a second look. What’s a guy like me got to do to prove to you that nice guys finish first?”
Jessie smiled teasingly. “For starters you could always kiss me Gary Ewing.”
“Gladly.”
She didn’t have to ask him twice. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her in for a kiss. It didn’t take him long to prove that he was nothing like his brother. They began to date, and she wound up not having to move out of Southfork. JR wasn’t happy, but he didn’t have any say in the matter. Miss Ellie was thrilled for her favorite son and his girlfriend. She gladly welcomed Jessie into the family and it wasn’t long before Jessie got the engagement ring that she had been looking forward to. It wasn’t the way she was dreaming about- it was even better.
