One Shot , hope you like it.
It was the fourth of July, everyone was home today. This was the one day, Jock insisted they all be together. They always have a BBQ, and swim, and have a big family event. It was funny, it was the one time a year, they all actually tried to get along, for Jock and Ellie.
Jock was up really early, he was excited, he put up the flag, like he did every year. He called Ray and Donna, to make sure they were coming. He was happy that Mavis and Punk where coming this year. He even invited Cliff and Afton for Pam, she wanted her Family near her this year too. He thought for One day Cliff and JR could tolerate each other. Miss Ellie came outside, and smiled, " wow Jock this looks amazing out here, you really went all out ".
" Yeah, I don't know this year , it just seems important for this to be perfect". She smiled hugging him, "you really are a big softy Jock, all that rough and tough act is just for show".
" Hey don't ruin my reputation around Dallas, I'm no softy".
" Ok, it is our secret".
John Ross ran out, "Grandma, Grandpa, it is the 4th of July".
"Yeah I know , where are your parents"?
" I heard them yelling , I didn't want to knock on their door".
Jock looked at Miss Ellie, " Not today, look after him", he walked into the house. He walked upstairs, and knocked on JR's and Sue Ellen's door. JR opened the door, " hey Daddy, I will be down, in a minute".
" I want to say something to both of you "?
" What is wrong you look upset"?
" You both don't think John Ross's, see's your fighting but he does. He came down, saying he was afraid to knock on your door. What is wrong with you JR, can't you just be a Father and a husband, one day of the year"?
"I'm here Daddy, what are you talking about"?
" I just know you like a book, your fighting with her. She is yelling back, because she is fed up with you. You want every excuse to walk out of this event today. You will be here, all day with Sue Ellen and John Ross, do you hear me"?
" Yes , loud and clear Daddy".
" You truly are blessed JR, you really don't realize it do you"?
Sue Ellen smiled, " We will be down Jock, we won't fight promise".
Jock smiled, he walked downstairs, hoping they would be fine today. He walked outside, and the guests were showing up. He greeted them, and everyone was having a great time. JR and Sue Ellen came out finally, and were talking with everyone. Jock watched, and wished he didn't raise JR the way he did. He loves JR's power in business, and is proud of that, but he wasn't proud, how he treated his family, not just his Wife and Child. He realized, he was partially to blame for that, business was everything, and he planted that in JR's head. He thought it was cool, JR was a player with women, but he thought after he brought Sue Ellen home he would change, but he didn't. He remembered Bobby was a bigger player than JR, but that changed, once he married Pam. He really didn't understand JR, why he was the way he was"?
Miss Ellie walked over to Jock," are you ok"?
"Yeah, I was just looking at my Family, I love them all Ellie. I especially love you "
" Jock are you feeling ok "?
" Sure, I'm waiting for your famous Chili, to be served". She smiled, "food will be ready soon, and I love you too Jock.". She sat beside him, as they cuddled, looking at the family.
Sue Ellen sat beside JR , and he smiled, " it is fun being home with you and John Ross, Sue Ellen".
" We both love you being here JR".
" He got up, lets swim Sue Ellen, John Ross would love that".
" Sure", they both got in the pool together. They were right, John Ross jumped into the pool with them. They three of them, were laughing, and joking, and splashing each other. Jock smiled, " now that is what I would love to see all the time Ellie".
" Me too, maybe someday he will change Jock".
The food was served, and everyone ate, and laughed, and it was a perfect fourth of July. JR and Cliff, actually were civil, and everyone was surprised at that. Jock got up , and said his annual speech, about Family and Friends, and what they should all be thankful for. He stared right at JR, who heard every word coming out of his Father's mouth, like it was meant for him. He looked over at Sue Ellen, and they hugged, as fireworks were going off. The kids were excited , and the adults, loved the fireworks just as much. JR walked over to his Father, and he smiled, " your really not happy with me Daddy"?
" I love you son, but it is time you grow up".
" Oh I'm sorry, your so disappointed".
" You are one lucky man, Sue Ellen is wonderful , and your Son, is amazing".
" I know that Daddy, I really do".
" You do, what are you going to do about it"?
" I promise, I will change, and be the son you can be proud of".
Jock smiled, "I will hold you to that JR, but I do love you son".
JR looked at his Daddy, " I love you too Dad".
Everyone went home that night, and Jock said goodnight to his family, and went to bed. The next few months, things changed around, Southfork, JR was home more. Sue Ellen was happy, and Jock and Ellie were happy to see the family finally coming together. It was a few months later, they lost Jock, in a horrible, jet accident, and his body was never found. Ellie had this feeling Jock, sensed he didn't have much longer to live. He wanted his Family happy, but she was devastated, she didn't think the family would survive without Jock. She was surprised, JR became the man of the house, he devoted so much time to his Mother, and Sue Ellen and John Ross. He ran the company with Bobby, and they both for the family, got along fairly well. Oh they had their disagreements, but nothing earth shattering. Sue Ellen really grew to admire, JR, and saw a side to him, that she was so proud of. He organized the next fourth of July, because he knew it was Jock's favorite holiday, and he wouldn't let his Daddy down. Every fourth of July, JR and the Family would dedicate the day to Jock, and they all talked about their favorite times with him. JR smiled, he just remembered the day his Father, showed him the right path, and he was so proud, Jock was his Father. He just hoped he could be half the man his Father was.
