“Welcome to today’s Dr. Phil. Today’s guests are a family unlike any you’ve ever seen before. Meet the Ewings. We have Jock, the patriarch. We have his ever patient wife Ellie. JR is the oldest with a heart as slick as the oil he sells. Sue Ellen is his wife who drinks but thinks that no one is aware of her little habit. Bobby is the good son, so good it makes me wonder if he is for real. Pam is the ever suffering daughter in law who believes her mission in life who throws herself into work. And then there’s Lucy, the stereotypical poor little rich girl who only wants to be loved. Let’s not forget about Ray, the ranch hand with a skeleton in his closet that I guarantee will rock this family to its core. Let’s begin shall we?” Dr. Phil began.
“Dr. Phil began with Jock. “Jock, I understand that you’re a proud man. You build this company from the ground up.”
“Darn right I did! I put all my sweat and tears into giving my family a legacy that will carry on long after I’m gone. My grandchildren will be running Ewing Oil.”
“Don’t you mean they will be running my company?” shouted a voice from the audience.
“Digger Barnes you shut your trap. I didn’t steal your company. It’s about time you grew up and accepted responsibility for your own actions. I found that oil fair and square. It’s not my fault your life turned out the way it did- in the bottom of a bottle.”
“So you are taking pot shots at a man with a drinking problem. Is this how you handle your daughter-in-law?” Dr. Phil asked.
“But I don’t have a drinking problem,” Sue Ellen insisted.
“And I suppose it’s normal people keep bottles of vodka in their closets, and in their vanities, and in their dressers?” Dr. Phil pressed.
“You would drink too if you were married to JR!”
“So now it’s someone else’s fault. It’s always about someone else. It’s high time you got real with yourself Sue Ellen. It’s all about you when you’re drinking so let’s make it about you when you’re sober.”
“But Dr. Phil… he stays out all night and doesn’t tell me where he’s at. He doesn’t have too. He’s a liar and a cheater. He made love to another woman in my bed. He’s carried on with his secretary. He’s even slept with my sister!”
The audience gasped while Dr. Phil stared at JR. “Is this true?”
“I might have had an indiscretion or two but Sue Ellen knows they didn’t mean anything. I always come home to her and John Ross.”
“Funny you bring up your son. As if your son can protect you from the reality that you’re a louse. I’m sorry there’s no other way to put it. I can use all the clinical terms in the world but in my professional opinion you’re nothing but a dog. And you know what they say about old dogs not learning new tricks.”
“Sue Elle n, that’s not true. I promise I’ll be good from now on. I don’t want to lose you or John Ross. I will come home every night. I want this to work. I want you to quit drinking and I’ll do whatever it takes to help you.”
The audience, not believing him for a second, booed him loudly. Lucy laughed, while Jock gave her a dirty look.
“Do you think this is funny young lady?”
“Any time JR gets in trouble is funny. Which is most of the time,” Lucy said proudly.
“And you haven’t had your share of trouble?” Dr, Phil asked.
“I usually don’t get caught.”
“How about the incidents at school when your aunt Pam had to bail you out?” Dr. Phil asked.
Lucy glared at Pam. “You weren’t supposed to tell.”
“We know all about that. You were skipping school while making hay in the hayloft…with your very own ranch hand.”
“What? Why didn’t I know about this?” Jock bellowed.
“Granddaddy, it wasn’t what you thought. I straightened up. I started going to school. I love you. Please don’t yell at me,” she begged.
“You’re young and innocent. What I’d like to know is who’s the fool who took advantage of you.”
“Granddaddy, please don’t.”
“It was me, sir. We were in love.” Ray spoke up.
“What, you and my granddaughter? I trusted you. Why I ought to knock your block off!” Jock stood up to face Ray and Dr. Phil’s security guard stood in between them.
“Jock, I can see this makes you angry. Why does this make you angry?”
“I trusted you boy. You were supposed to be handling the land, not my granddaughter.”
“Sir, we never meant for it to happen. I had feelings for her. But I realized it was wrong and I put a stop to it.”
“Granddaddy, Ray didn’t do anything wrong. It was all me.”
“I don’t care. You’re fired.”
“Granddaddy,” Lucy spoke up. “If Ray goes, I go. I’ll go off with him. You won’t be able to stop me. You won’t ever see me again.”
The audience grew quiet.
“Lucy, do you really think it’s appropriate to blackmail your grandfather this way?” Dr. Phil asked.
“Yes. I’m not going to let him ruin Ray’s life over something I did.”
Jock looked at Lucy and then at Ray. “Boy, you’ve been the best help I’ve ever had. I won’t fire you. But if you so much as look at my granddaughter so help me…”
“Yes sir. I understand,” Ray nodded.
Dr. Phil couldn’t believe this. He had lost total control of his show. The Ewings were nothing more than lying, cheating blackmailers who did nothing but try to control one another, and even the patriarch couldn’t control them. This was beyond his expertise. The audience was going crazy. He threw off his earpiece and stormed off the stage. The ratings were the best he had ever had. The Ewings were just too much, even for Dr. Phil.
