Brooke was devastated. Jessie was about to give birth to Ridge’s child. Ridge and Jessie weren’t married yet, but she knew that Jessie loved him. Brooke still cried over Ridge nearly every night of her life. She had believed that they were soul mates, that they were destined to be together. After four kids and nearly two decades together, she’d thought that nothing would keep them apart. Not infidelities, not tragedies, not indecisions, nothing. And now Ridge had moved on. She couldn’t accept it. Not now or not ever.
She had to find a way to be with Ridge. This couldn’t be over. Brooke was nothing if not determined. Ridge was hers, everyone knew that. Nothing would ever keep them apart. She would feel bad for Jessie and especially the baby, but you just couldn’t fight fate. And that’s what it was between her and Ridge.
Should she do this? Should she confess her undying love to Ridge? It was now or never. If she waited until after the baby was born, then she may never get a chance again. Ridge may be so wrapped up in the child that he may never leave Jessie. If she spoke up now she may find out that she had a chance, that he still felt the same way she did. Brooke couldn’t stand it any more. She had to fight out how Ridge felt.
Brooke knocked on Ridge’s door.
“Logan,” he smiled. “You’re looking particularly fetching today. On your way to see any one of your suitors?”
Brooke took a deep breath. If he only knew.
“What’s the matter? Cat’s got your tongue?”
“Ridge, we have to talk.”
“Sure, Brooke. What’s up? You can always come to me, you know that. After all these years I hope you know that I’m always here for you.”
“I know that. That’s one thing I’ve always appreciated about you. You’ve always been there for me whenever I needed for you. I guess I’ve always taken that for granted. I wish I would have told you that when we were together,” Brooke said sadly.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ve always known how you felt about me.”
“Have you?”
“I think so.”
“I don’t think you do. That’s why I’m here.”
“I’m afraid I don’t follow,” Ridge said, confused.
“Ridge, this may be the most cruel thing that I’ve ever done to you. But I couldn’t live with myself if I didn’t tell you how I feel. I still love you. I’ve always loved you and I’m afraid that I always will. I could kick myself for all of the mistakes that I’ve made in the past. We’ve been through so much together and that has to count for something. Don’t let our love slip away. Let’s get away, just the two of us. Let’s start again. You’ve been in my past, and I truly believe that you’re in my future,” Brooke said tearfully.
“Logan, you said it the best. I’m in your past. I love you and I always will. Nothing will ever change that. But Jessie is in my present and my future. I’m building a life with her. She’s having my baby. I would never do anything to hurt her. I love her, just as I loved you once. I will always be your friend and I would never do anything to hurt you but I want to be with Jessie. I hope you can understand that.”
Brooke began to cry. “I thought… I don’t know what I was thinking. I always thought we would wind up together. I thought you were the only one for me and I was the only one for you. I never dreamed we’d wind up this way. I’m sorry, I can’t do this anymore.”
She ran out the door, only to see a very pregnant Jessie running towards the elevator.
“Jessie, wait!”
Jessie rapidly pressed every button she could, desperate to get away from Brooke. The doors opened and Brooke got in with her.
“Jessie…”
“Don’t talk to me. I don’t know how you can do this to me. I have a baby on the way. Don’t you care? If I was a cussing woman I’d have a few choice words for you, you…”
“Jessie, please… it’s not good for you to get upset. Think of your baby.”
“Oh, now you’re worried about my baby? You weren’t so worried about her a few minutes ago when you were making a play for my boyfriend!”
Suddenly the elevator stopped. Jessie’s eyes widened while Brooke began hitting buttons. She got on the phone, which wasn’t working.
“You’ve got to be kidding,” Jessie exclaimed.
“No joke,” Brooke muttered.
“No, my water just broke!”
“Oh my gosh! What are we going to do?” Brooke began to panic.
“Call Ridge!”
“J don’t have my cell phone on me. I left it in the car.”
Jessie reached in her purse and tried to dial. “Great. It says no service.”
“What are we going to do?” Brooke asked.
“I don’t know. I can’t wait much longer!”
“Jessie, stay calm. It will be okay. I’ve given birth to three kids. I can help you if I need to. Don’t worry. Everything will be just fine. I won’t let anything happen to you or your baby,” Brooke smiled.
Jessie sat down. “You promise?”
“I promise. Now you just hang in there. I’m an old pro at this. We’re going to get through this together. Squeeze my hand if you need to.”
“I’m scared Brooke.”
“Don’t be. I’ve given birth in the strangest places. And my kids have all turned out just fine.”
Jessie didn’t know why, but she believed Brooke. If she could survive unusual circumstances, maybe she could too. This wasn’t how she planned it, with Brooke of all people, but hopefully she would be all right. Suddenly she felt the urge to push. “I can’t hold off any longer!”
“Okay! I’m coming to help you!”
A few minutes later Jessie and Ridge’s daughter was born, and both mother and daughter were fine. Who would have thought that the two rivals could have put aside their differences in order to come together for such a blessed occasion?
Jessie cried with tears of joy. Brooke cried too. As she watched Jessie hold Ridge’s daughter, she knew that she was saying goodbye to Ridge. Ridge was right; what they had was in the past and Brooke was looking at Ridge’s future. It was going to be hard, but it was time to move on. She owed it to Ridge that much. And she owed it to herself as well. She would never say goodbye to Ridge, he would always be part of her. They had kids together. But if Ridge was going to be with someone else, she was glad it was Jessie. She genuinely made him happy. Finally the elevator opened and help came for Jessie and the baby. She was proud of herself and what she had done for Ridge, contrary to what had happened an hour before. It was time to move on. She was ready.
She had to find a way to be with Ridge. This couldn’t be over. Brooke was nothing if not determined. Ridge was hers, everyone knew that. Nothing would ever keep them apart.
