Phillip and Beth were driving back from visiting their granddaughter Sarah and Jonathan. They were driving in total silence. She had thought he had cheated on her since he she had caught him kissing Mindy. No matter how many times he had tried to explain that it wasn’t what it looked like, she wouldn’t listen to him. He had hurt her too many times in the past for her to give him another chance. Every time it seemed like they had a future he would do something to break her heart, and she refused to let him in again.
“Beth… please… it wasn’t what you thought…”
“You know what…” she put her hand in the air.” Just drive. I know what I saw and I don’t care anymore. I really don’t. I’m tired of the excuses and I’m tired of you. I don’t see what we have to say to each other anymore. We have tried this so many times and it’s never worked. Maybe we should take it as a sign from God that its just not meant to work. I’m tired, Phillip. I’m tired of your games and I’m tired of your lies. You’re just like your father.”
Phillip did a sharp turn and pulled over to the side of the road. That was the worst thing anyone could have said to him. He looked at her for the longest time. “I am so not like Alan. After everything we’ve been through don’t you think you owe it to me to hear me out?”
“I don’t owe you anything! I’m sick of this… Phillip… I don’t like the look of this guy…”
A man walked up to the car and knocked on the window. Against his better judgment, Phillip cracked down the window.
“Excuse me, sir. “I’m lost. Can you give me directions?” the man asked.
“I’m sorry, we’re not really from around here.”
The man laughed. “I thought so.” He pulled out a gun. “A couple as pretty as you really shouldn’t be out driving around by yourselves. Now give me your wallet and your purse. Do as I say and you won’t get hurt.”
Nervously, Phillip and Beth obeyed.
“Now you wouldn’t think of doing anything funny like calling the police would you?”
“No, sir. You have all our money. Just leave us alone please,” Phillip pleaded.
“I want to make sure you won’t do anything foolish. Give me your cell phones.”
“Hers is in her purse. I don’t have one.”
The man took his gun and smacked Phillip across the face. “A man like you has a cell phone. Now give it to me.”
Phillip reached in his jacket and handed him his phone.
Before the man left he shot the front tire and then he ran off. Phillip took Beth in his arms, she was starting to cry by now.
“It will be okay. Someone will come along and help us.”
“No they won’t. We’re in the middle of nowhere. We’re stuck and we’re going to die out here alone,” Beth sobbed.
Phillip kissed the top of her head. “Don’t say that. Someone is bound to drive by. I won’t let anything happen to you. I promise. Have I ever let you down?”
Beth looked at him, and thought of all the times he came to her rescue. He had saved her in so many ways, she would always be thankful for having him in her life. No matter what their differences were, he was truly a miracle in her life. He’d given her the best years of her life, and there was no way she could repay her for what he’d given her.
“I’m scared, Phillip.”
“Don’t be. I’m here now. You know I’m here to protect you. Don’t you always feel safe when I’m around?”
She looked in his eyes. He was the only man she could only say that the answer was yes, she did feel safe when he was around. She had suffered abuse and never thought she could trust another living person. But she trusted him with her heart and her soul and her body. In her heart she knew Phillip would never do anything to hurt her, not on purpose.
Beth settled into Phillip’s arms, and they watched the sunset turn into nighttime, with no cars passing them by. They talked about everything, from how he had saved her from her father to the good old days with Rick and Mindy. He made her laugh and made her cry, Most of all he made her feel safe in ways that only he knew how. She didn’t know why, but she knew that he would get her out of this.
“Look at me, Beth.”
“I would never do anything to hurt you. I kissed Mindy but it was a friendship kiss. I would never do anything to hurt you or Rick. I don’t want to lose you. I just got you back and I never want to lose you. I promise you that’s the truth. Whatever’s happed with me and Mindy is in the past. You are my present and my future. I want to spend the rest of my life making you as happy as you make me.”
“What are you saying, Phillip Spaulding?”
He smiled. “I think you know what I’m saying. I want to be with you for the rest of my life. Marry me. We belong together. No matter what happens we always wind up back together. Let’s not waste any more time pretending not to care about each other when all we want to do is love each other. At least that’s what I want to do with you. Please say yes.”
Beth laughed. “Yes. I would love to marry you.”
She fell into his arms, where she spent the rest of the night. Finally in the morning, they flagged down a passing motorist and where able to call for help. Much to the delight of their family and friends, they were wed. Jonathan decided to let Lizzie raise Sarah, and Phillip and Beth finally felt there family was complete. They took the hard way, but they got there, and they never left again.
