Thanks to Jessie who inspired this fic. I wrote this because I didn't like how GL treated Michael Zaslow so I thought of something they could have done with Roger instead.
Holly was sitting at her house in Hawaii when the phone rang. She nearly tripped over her shoe to answer it. She cussed silently then laughed, then answered the phone.
“Hello?”
“Mom, it’s me.”
“Blake? Hi, it’s nice to hear from you. Is everything all right sweetheart? It’s good to hear from you again. It’s been awhile since you’ve called dear ol’ mom.”
“Mom, no, everything is not okay. I need you to come here as soon as you can.”
“What’s wrong? You’re scaring me.”
“It’s Dad. He’s been in a car accident.”
Holly let the phone slide down as she processed the information. Roger- her ex. The man who had put her through so much. The man who she could never let go of, no matter how hard she tried, now needed her. It had taken years to get him out of her system and now Blake wanted her to give up her life to come running to him? Blake was too young to understand the complications of her and Roger’s relationship mercifully. She would never be able to understand why she could not- would not be able to go to him.
“Blake, I’m sorry but I just can’t go to him. I wish there were something I could do to help but I think that my presence would do more harm than good.”
“Mom, you don’t understand, he’s badly hurt. He needs you. I need you. Please don’t do this to him. I know you two have a past but this isn’t the time to hold this against him,” Blake pleaded.
“This isn’t about holding a grudge. I’ve let go of your father a long time ago. I had to or I would have gone crazy. I can’t explain what your father has done to me. I love Roger and I always will… but if I see him now it will take away years of progress I’ve made with myself and that’s a risk I just can’t afford to take.”
“Mom, can’t you do this for me?”
“I’m sorry Blake, but I can’t,” Holly sighed.
“Dad may be paralyzed. They don’t know if he will ever walk again.”
Holly felt her eyes fill with tears. This couldn’t be happening to the immortal Roger Thorpe, not the man who lived for danger and excitement. Not the man who wasn’t afraid of anything. Now she knew she couldn’t see him- it would break her heart too much. “I’m sorry, Blake,” she said sadly as she hung up the phone.
Holly couldn’t’ sleep that night. All she could think of was Roger and everything that he had put her through. She had almost lost her mind because of that man. But how she had loved him, in ways even she didn’t understand. Throughout all of the affairs, all of the lies, all of the scandals, Roger had always been the one who had her heart- and he knew it. He preyed upon it, and used it to his advantage. But there was something about him that kept drawing her back to him every time. When would she ever be free from him?
She had always needed him in order to make her complete. And now in a cruel twist of fate, Roger needed her. But could she be strong enough to stand by his side? And would he even want her to see him like this?
The next morning she boarded the red-eye to Springfield. Holly didn’t even tell her daughter that she was coming. In her heart she knew she could never abandon Roger, not when he had meant so much to her in her life. She had been through so much in her life, and this would be the hardest thing she would ever have to go through, but if he would have her she would stand by his side.
She got to the hospital, where she saw Blake out in the hallway crying. She ran up to her and they embraced.
“Mom, I didn’t think you were coming.”
“I didn’t think I was either. But you know I could never walk away… not like this. You know what your father means to me.”
“I know and I think he really needs to know that right now, “ Blake smiled.
Blake ran up to Rick. “My mom’s here. Can she go in to see Dad?”
“Not for very long.”
“How is he, Rick?” Holly asked. “Tell me the truth.
“I’m sorry to have to tell you this Holly. We don’t know much at this point. But right now he won’t be able to walk. We don’t know how long it will last. We are doing everything we can for him,” Rick said sadly.
“Does he know?”
Rick nodded.
Holly walked in and saw Roger looking out of the window. It was all she could do to keep from crying, seeing him lying there like this. She would love to know what he was thinking, and she wished she could take this all away from him.
“Roger.”
He didn’t even look at her.
She sat by him and took his hand. He didn’t even grab it in return.
“Blake called me. I’m so sorry. I wish there was something more I can say to you,” she began awkwardly.
More silence.
“Roger, look at me,” she demanded. “Look at me.”
Finally their eyes met and she could see all of the hurt in his eyes. He was still the same man that he had loved all of those years; in some ways nothing had changed.
“Listen to me. We are going to get through this. I don’t know what it’s going to take but I am going to be here with you the whole time and you’re going to make it. I need you to be strong right now. You’re the strongest man I’ve ever met and I need you to keep fighting.”
“Why should I Holly? What’s left for me to keep fighting for? A lifetime of confinement? A life sentence? . I’m finally getting my just desserts for all of the bad things I’ve ever done. You’ve won. We’re even.”
“How dare you! I never wanted this for you. I got my revenge on you by being happy and living my life. And I’m not going to let you push me away. Not now. Not ever.”
“What are you saying, Holly?”
“Roger, I’m saying that I still love you. I always have and I always will.”
“You’re only saying that because you feel sorry for me.”
“No one ever feels sorry for Roger Thorpe. We belong together, you and me. We’ve always had our ups and downs but you’ve always been there to catch me when I fall. You know how to read me like a book- sometimes that scares me but I’ve got your number too. We’re two of a kind. No one drives me crazy or makes me laugh or challenges me the way you do. There is no one I’d rather spend the rest of my days with than you.” Holly leaned in and kissed him. At first he refused but she kissed him again. He refused again but then he finally gave in and kissed her until their passion broke and they both realized that their love had never really died.
Holly and Roger re-wed. Theirs was never a boring marriage, even though Roger had his obstacles to overcome. He came to a new appreciation for her, and he learned new ways to show it for her. They still fought on occasion- they wouldn’t be the Thorpes if they didn’t’. But in they surprised everyone and had a marriage that inspired many people. Whoever said people couldn’t change couldn’t have been more wrong.
