“ I can’t deal with this,” Jessie said to Ridge as they laid down in bed. “I don’t know what your mother’s problem has been lately but she has been so mean to me. She has been criticizing everything from my hair to my clothes. I can’t help it that I still like to wear my own clothes now and then.”
“I know, but that’s my mother. She means well, but I admit she can be a bit overbearing. Just try to overlook her. I have always had this problem with all of my girlfriends.”
“Everyone except for Taylor.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? You’re not jealous of Taylor are you?”
“No, I’m not. It’s just hard when I think that your mother would rather you still date one of your ex-wives when I haven’t done anything wrong.”
“Honey, I know you haven’t. Just try to stay strong. I need you to stay strong. I have a lot of pressure with the Italian show coming up. That’s the biggest show of the year. I will be so busy, I can’t focus if I know that you’re not happy,” a concerned Ridge spoke up.
“Are you going to be too busy for my birthday? I know that’s silly but that’s the one time of the year that is special to me. My mother always made such a big deal out of it for me- maybe she spoiled me. I was hoping that we could spend the day together,” Jessie pleaded.
“I don’t know, sweetheart. I will be awfully busy. I can’t afford to make any mistakes. Dad’s counting on me to get this just right. I have the whole company resting on me and I just can’t let my personal life stand in the way of my work.”
“Is that all I am to you? Your personal life? Ridge, I thought I meant more to you than that. I am so hurt right now that I can’t even stand to be in the same room as you.” Jessie grabbed her pillow and went to the guest room. She looked at the clock. It was only ten. She picked up the phone and called her best friend Sanda.
“It’s me. Can we talk?”
“Sure, what’s up?” Sanda asked.
“It’s Ridge. He says he’s going to be too busy to spend any time with me on my birthday.”
“I’m sorry. But you knew he’s a very busy man when you started dating him.”
“I know. Maybe I am being childish but I was hoping he would take one day to spend with me.”
“Did you tell him how you feel?” Sanda asked.
“Yes and it didn’t do any good. And it didn’t help any matters that I’m still hurt how Stephanie has been treating me. She’s been acting like I’m a second class citizen. I hate that Ridge won’t stand up to her. I hate to say it but he’s such a mama’s boy,” Jessie said sadly.
“Wow, you have a lot of resentment built up. Do you think you two can work things out?”
“I hope so because I really love him. I really do.”
A week later it was Jessie’s birthday and nothing was said. Ridge was at the office and Jessie was at home alone, watching her favorite Barbra Streisand movie, The mirror has two faces. She was getting to watch another movie when the doorbell rang.
“Stephanie, what are you doing here? Ridge is at work.”
“Yes, I know. I came here to talk to you. Do you mind if I sit down?”
“No, please have a seat.”
“I understand that you think I’ve been picking on you, that you think that I have some unnatural hatred of you. You even think that I favor Taylor over you.”
Jessie began to panic. How dare Ridge betray her like that? What she had told him was supposed to stay between the two of them.
“Stephanie…I…”
She put her hand in the air. “Ridge never said anything. There has been some tension between us. I’ve gone through this before, with Brooke. I want you to know that I am not comparing you with Brooke. I would never do that to you. I like you, very much in fact. I have been putting distance between us for a reason. It takes a strong person to become a Forrester. I wanted to see how you would hold up. I think you did just fine.”
“I’m afraid I don’t understand…”
.
Ridge and Eric and Thorne walked in. Ridge got down on one knee and pulled out the biggest diamond ring that Jessie had ever seen.
“Jessie, I love you, and I have since the day I laid eyes on you. I’ve had a lot of losses in love and I never thought that I would be happy again. But you have restored my faith in love and in humanity. I believe that all things are possible if you truly find the person you’re destined to be with. Jessie will you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”
Jessie was overcome with emotion and couldn’t stop herself from crying. All she could manage to do was nod her head and smile, and Ridge took her in his arms while the entire family applauded. The Forresters had been through many tragedies, but this was a new day of happiness. This was a birthday that Jessie would always remember
