“What do you know about Pam?” Stephen asked Brooke.
“She is a few fries short of a happy meal. She is crazy. You wouldn’t believe everything she’s put this family through. She doesn’t have any friends. Her best friend was a dog for goodness sake. She is a very lonely woman who has nothing but time on her hands. You can tell she’s related to Stephanie.”
Maybe it was his compassionate heart, but something told Stephen that Brooke was being a little unfair to Pam. It sounded like she had lived a rough life, and she must be lonely. He didn’t know why but he wanted to get to know her better. She was a pretty woman, and she was always so cheerful around him. Maybe all she needed was someone to give her a second look.
“Don’t you think you’re being a little hard on her? Maybe all she needs is a little kindness, a little compassion. We could all use that in our lives,” Stephen said.
“Daddy, I love you but you’re nuts if you are thinking about getting to know Pam. She is so unstable. Please leave her alone,” Brooke begged.
“I love you too sweetheart but I’m an adult and I can make my own decisions. Now if you’ll excuse me I think I’m going to get going now.” He kissed her forehead and took off.
Across town, Pam was busy making her famous lemon bars. She picked up a picture of her Doberman Tiny and sighed. She still missed her dog very much and thought that nothing or no one could ever take its place. She liked people, but animals were much easier to deal with. They loved you unconditionally, and they never left. People who you loved always left.
Just as she poured herself a cup of tea the doorbell rang. Pam knew that Stephanie was at work and so she wasn’t really expecting anyone else. She peeked through the crack of the door and was stunned to see Stephen Logan standing there. What was someone as handsome as him doing there? She brushed down her dress and opened the door.
“Stephen? May I help you with something? I wasn’t expecting you!” Pam blushed when Stephen smiled at her. She wasn’t sure what he was smiling at, but she knew she liked it.
“I brought you some flowers. I thought you might like these. I hope its okay,” he grinned. “May I come in?”
“Thank you. They are beautiful. Let me put these in some water. You’re in luck. I just made some of my famous lemon bars. Would you like one?”
“I’d love one!”
They both enjoyed one. “Pam, this is wonderful. You’re a terrific cook. Are you this good at everything you do?”
“Well I can sew, and I can clean, I’m not much of a singer but I do try. I have a bit of a green thumb but I don’t get out in this apartment.”
“Sounds like you have a lot to offer.” Maybe Brooke was wrong about Pam. It sounded like she did have healthy interests, just no one to share them with. “Any man would be lucky to have you in his life.”
Pam was stunned. No man had ever said anything like that to her in her life. If they had, they were making fun of her. Maybe that’s what Stephen was doing. Why would he be here now? Certainly he couldn’t really be interested in her, could he? Dare she get her hopes up?
Nervously, she laughed. “Stop, you say that to all the girls!”
“Just the ones I like.” He took his hand and cupped her chin with it. He guided her face, forcing her to look him in the eyes.
“Pam, I’m going to ask you a question, and I want you to be honest with me. I hope you can trust me. I’m not here to hurt you.”
Pam nodded, not sure if she believed him or not.
“When was the last time a man kissed you?”
Pam looked away, embarrassed to answer him.
“I promise I won’t laugh. It’s okay. You can trust me,” Stephen told her.
“It’s been five years. And the guy did it on a dare. It broke my heart. I have a hard time trusting men. I’ve never been with a man and I’ve never been in love. I don’t know why I’m telling you these things. You’ll probably turn around and laugh- look at the pathetic old woman…”
“Pam, look at me. I don’t think you’re pathetic. And I definitely don’t think you’re old. I think you’re sexy, you’re fun, you’re smart- you’re someone I would like to get to know better.”
She was shocked. No one had ever called her sexy before. That was the last thing she was expecting to hear. “You would?”
Stephen smiled. “And if you’ll permit me I’d like to remedy at least one of your problems.”
Pam’s heart beat rapidly as he pulled her in close to him. He wrapped his arms around her and leaned in and kissed her, softly.
“Well, how was it?” he smiled.
“It was worth the wait,” she smiled, pulling him for another kiss. This was definitely unorthodox, and it shocked both of their families, but it was the beginning of a love that proved strong for the both of them. Pam was finally happy, at long last.
