“So Bobby, what are you doing tonight? Same old, same old?” JR asked as everyone sat down at outside at the table for lunch.
“JR, what I do for my evenings are none of your business.”
“You know, I think you might do well to take a cue from Pam. I have it on good authority that she and Mark are going dancing tonight at the new club that just opened. A good looking guy like yourself shouldn’t be spending all your time alone every weekend.”
“I’m not alone. I have Christopher. And I’ll thank you to shut your trap when he’s around,” Bobby demanded.
“I’m just saying, that Pam’s not letting Christopher interfere with her love life.”
Bobby stood up and got in JR’s face but looked down and saw Christopher looking at him. “Come on, buddy. Let’s get out of here. Mamma we’re going to eat lunch somewhere else.”
JR chuckled to himself while everyone stared at him. Sometimes he really was too much.
Bobby drove into Dallas and couldn’t decide where he wanted to eat. Christopher started crying.
“what’s the matter?”
“McDonald’s!” he pointed to the golden arches.
“Come on, buddy. That place is no good for you,” Bobby protested.
“McDonald’s!” Christopher repeated.
Bobby turned around and entered the parking lot to the restaurant. “All right buddy. If this is what you want we’ll give it a shot.”
His son clapped his hands in excitement.
They walked up to the counter, where an attractive woman was waiting to take their order. Her name badge said Sanda, and it said that she was the manager.
“you’re the manager? I’m surprised you’re at the register,” Bobby smiled.
“We’re a little bit short of help today. I like to pitch in,” she explained. “How may I help you today?”
“I’m afraid you have your work cut out with us. This is our first time in here.”
“You’ve never been to a McDonald’s before?” Sanda laughed.
Bobby also laughed. “I’m afraid so. I don’t really know what to order.”
“Well I recommend for your son the chicken nugget happy meal. And for you, the Big Mac meal is pretty popular.”
“A woman as pretty as yourself must have good taste. I will go with that,” Bobby agreed.
As she rang him up their eyes met and they both felt a spark of electricity. Bobby touched her hand a little longer than he should have. Sanda blushed.
“And when your son is finished eating may I suggest the playland? They have an excellent ball pit and they have a great jungle gym area. The kids have a great time.”
“Do your kids go in there?” Bobby asked.
“I don’t have any children. I’m not married.”
Bobby smiled. “I’ll have to remember that. Do you have any desserts here?”
“Yes, we have ice cream and pies.”
“I will be back for sure. Thanks, Sanda.” Bobby took his food and he and Christopher went to take their seats. Sanda was excited. Bobby was the most handsome man to have ever walked through the doors of McDonalds and if she didn’t know any better she would swear he was flirting with her. She definitely hoped he would be back for dessert.
True to his word, he came back for more. There were two other lines open with fewer customers but Bobby chose to wait for Sanda.
“What do you recommend for dessert?”
“I like the strawberry sundaes myself,” Sanda smiled.
“Okay, we’ll take two of those.”
Sanda got them for him and eagerly returned to him.
“Listen Sanda, I was wondering… I know this might sound crazy but I was really hoping you might care to join me for dinner tonight. I know you might be exhausted after work but it would be nice if we could get to know each other better.”
Sanda was thrilled. She wrote down her number for him and they talked for a few minutes. Bobby and Christopher went to eat their ice cream and then Christopher went to play in the playland. A little later Sanda went to check in on them when they heard Christopher crying. He had gotten stuck near the top of the area.
Sanda ran up to go get him without thinking. Christopher ran to her and together they slid down the slide. Bobby laughed, thinking how cute they looked together.
“Thank you Sanda. You really saved the day. My boy really seems to like you.”
“I love kids. I hope to have some of my own someday,” Sanda said wistfully.
“My mamma would really like you. You’re sweet. Sweeter than the sundae.” They both laughed.
They went on their date, and they had a good time. They continued to see each other regularly, and they often included Christopher on their dates. Sanda eventually became his stepmother and a mother of her own, all thanks to McDonald’s.
