Her hat is hanging by the door
The one she bought in Mexico
It blocked the wind
It stopped the rain
She'd never leave that one
So, she can't be really gone- Tim Mcgraw
Bobby looked at the hat hanging up in the closet, the one Pam insisted on buying on their last trip to Mexico. He had laughed because it was so big on her but she loved it. She swore it kept the sun out of her eyes. She was never much of a hat wearer but she loved that one. He had always teased her, always saying that he would get rid of it. And now it was one of the few things he had left of his beloved Pam.
Pam was dying. Cliff had come by today with the most terrible news he had heard in his life.
“Cliff, what are you doing here? I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you here at Ewing Oil. JR’s not in if that’s who you’re looking for,” Bobby said to his former brother-in-law.
“I know he’s not. I called ahead.”
“Then why are you here? I don’t understand.”
“I’m going to pour myself a drink. I’m going to pour you one. I think you’re going to need one,” Cliff said, helping himself.
Bobby nodded. This was quite curious.
“Bobby, there’s no easy way to tell you what I’m about to tell you. And I think you’d better sit down.”
“Cliff if there’s something on your mind I think you’d better come out and say it. This wouldn’t be about Pam, would it?”
Cliff nodded.
“What about it? Where is she? What’s going on?”
“It doesn’t matter where she’s at. Tonight is her last night. She’s dying, Bobby.”
Bobby was heartbroken. He knew that she didn’t want to be found, but dying? He never expected this. How could she go through this and never tell him? What would he do without the love of his life?
“Where is she?”
“I can’t tell you that. I promised her I wouldn’t.”
“You want to tell me, that’s why you’re here. What’s she going to do, come back and haunt you? Tell me now, darn you!” Bobby reached over and grabbed Cliff by the collar.
“Bobby I can’t.”
“If you don’t tell me where she’s at so help me I’ll never forget this… I’ll get you if that’s the last thing I do. If you thought JR was bad you haven’t seen anything yet.”
Cliff just stared at Bobby wondering what to do.
Bobby heard himself and hated himself for it. “Cliff, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. It’s just I have to find her…please don’t do this to me. I could never live with myself not telling her how I feel before she goes. I would do anything just to hold her in my arms one last time.”
If it was for JR, Cliff wouldn’t lift a finger, no matter how desperate he was. But his brother in law wasn’t so bad. And Pam deserved some peace before she died. So he gave Bobby her address.
He put his hand on Bobby’s shoulder. “Take care of her.”
“I will,” Bobby smiled. “Thank you.”
“I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing this for her.”
“I know you are.” Bobby turned around and left, telling Phyllis to cancel all of his appointments. Cliff prayed he was doing the right thing.

Pam was lying down when she heard a knock on the door. The nurse answered it, when Bobby barged past her.
“where is she,” he demanded. “I have to see her.”
Pam gasped. She would know that voice anywhere. He found her. But how did he know where she was at? Cliff- it had to have been. All these years she was so careful and now her worst fear had came true…. Bobby was going to suffer and she was going to have to watch him. She began to cry.
“Pam….” He called out as he ran to her. He put his hands on her face. “My goodness you are more beautiful than the day I met you.” All the feelings of anger disappeared and memories of love came flooding back to him.
“Don’t say that…”
“Pam don’t you realize how much I love you? You mean the world to me and now I’m here with you. Thank God Cliff came to me. I’m just sorry he didn’t come sooner. I have missed you so much. Not a day has gone by where I haven’t thought about you. You’ve been in my dreams and my heart. As much as I’ve tried to go on with my life it hasn’t been the same without you,” Bobby said, holding her hand and choking back tears.
“I never wanted you to see me like this. I have never forgot about you too. I knew what this would do to you. All I wanted was happiness in your life,” Pam said as she kissed his hand.
“Don’t you know that’s what you gave to me? Even on our worst day you brought me happiness that I never thought possible. When I thought of all our wasted time during our divorce--- all of that’s behind us now. We have today and I just want to make the most of it. I’m here for you and that’s all that matters. I love you so much Pam. I want to ask you a question.”
“Of course, you can ask me anything! I would do anything to make up to you what I’ve done.”
“You don’t owe me anything sweetheart. But I would like to know… would you make me the happiest man alive and marry me?”
Pam began to cry. “Oh Bobby, yes, I would love nothing more than to marry you. But I can’t leave here…”
“Don’t’ worry, I’ll take care of everything. You just give me an hour and I’ll make everything happen.”
Within two hours Bobby and Pam were married again. She didn’t make it through the night, but her last few hours were among the happiest of her life. They talked about Christopher and how well he was doing, Southfork, Ewing Oil, Bobby’s family, Cliff, and what Pam had been doing for the past few years. It was hard to let Pam go, but he went home happy knowing that he had one last day with her.
