“Do you realize that none of this would have happened if you wouldn’t have brought that idiot son of yours to town? That monster has terrorized half of Genoa City and now Nicholas is behind bars paying for a crime any of us could have committed. And what does The Mustache have to say for himself? Does he find himself guilty of anything in all of this?” demanded Jack Abbot at the Newman residence.
“Jack, you’re angry and I don’t blame you. But Victor is punishing himself. You don’t have to sit here and throw more angry words at him. That won’t do anyone any good…” Nikki Newman started.
“Angry words…what I’d like to throw at him are my own two fists. This man has done more to bring ruin and destruction to this town than any singular act of God than I can think of. First Patty Williams and now Adam Willson? Victor has no conscience. He has sacrificed his own child…what everyone thought was his own child…all in the name of protecting his beloved Adam,” Jack spat out.
“Stop it right there, Abbot. I did no such thing. I handed Faith over as soon as I realized what Adam had done. She was my daughter, I had raised her as such and I had loved her as my own. For me to lose her was an unimaginable heartbreak. And to find out that my own son was guilty of doing this to so many people- well I am as shocked and disturbed as the rest of you. And I intended to see him for his crime.” Victor spoke up.
“Jack, can’t you find it in your heart to have some sympathy for Victor? He’s lost two children now, and his son is fighting for his freedom. His family has been through so much. Now would be the time to put aside your bitterness and find some common ground. You both love Ashley, and you both watched her suffer this terrible loss. You both have lost children. Jack….remember how much we wanted the babies I carried? You wanted so badly to be a father. Then I miscarried. That devastated us. The loss of a child is a tragedy, one which I don’t think you would wish on anyone. So try to imagine Victor’s pain as he tries to come to terms with the loss of his daughter Faith and the death of his son Adam. Please see that he is a man in pain. He is human, as you are. You mourned for your children, just as he is. Don’t let your hatred turn you into what you accuse Victor of being,” Nikki pleaded with her ex husband.
“Nikki, mourning the loss of Adam is different then mourning the loss of our children…”
“But is it so different than mourning Faith? She is so innocent, so precious. She didn’t do anything wrong. She didn’t ask to be a victim. All she did was love Victor as a father, in only a way a child can. And to lose that, that is devastating. You know the loss of your hopes and dreams for a child. Can’t you for once see past your hatred for Victor and see him as a man who hurts too?” Nikki went behind the couch and placed her hands on Victor’s shoulders, literally standing behind her man.
“Thank you, Nikki, but I do not need this man’s approval of my feelings. He is not capable of seeing anyone else’s point of view but his, and that is one reason I could care less of what he thinks of me,” Victor spoke up.
“Now Victor, you stop it. I want you two to come to an agreement. This was not Jack’s fault. This was not your fault. This was a senseless tragedy. And if you two can’t come to some agreement then I won’t be around to watch the consequences. I can’t watch you destroy yourself and those you come in contact with Victor. And Jack, I expect you to take the high road every now and then. I watch you and the compassion you are capable of showing. Its’ high time you share that with other people.”
The two men grew quiet, both thinking about what Nikki had to say. There was so much tension in the room, and Nikki was doing everything in her power to break it. It wouldn’t be easy; she was working against years of history.
“All right, Mustache, I’ll give you that you’ve been supportive of Ashley during this time. I don’t suppose it could be easy on you to be away from Faith. Ashley does have it harder; you’ll always be part of Faith’s life. But so far you’ve handled it admirably all things considered,” Jack conceded.
Nikki smiled. She always knew that Jack had a great deal of class in him. He could be counted on doing the right thing, even if it cost him. And that cost him a lot.
“And Jack, I do regret bringing Adam to town. I never dreamt he would have turned out like this. I am ashamed to call him my son. I am ashamed that he had ruined so many lives. I wish things could have turned out differently for everyone.”
That was as close to an apology as Victor would give, and everyone knew it. That was admission of remorse, which satisfied Jack who nodded his head. They would never be friends, never like or trust each other, but tonight was a starting point in their road to healing. If it weren’t for Nikki’s persistence, none of it would have been possible. Probably tomorrow they would go back to the name calling and finger pointing that marked their relationship, but tonight they could sit and share in the silence that marked the shared night of mourning that each of them felt. It would be a long time before the two of them could get together in the room and be civil with each other, but tonight they allowed themselves to just let go of everything and just sit. There would be time enough for hatred later. Each of them recognized a moment of peace when they saw it, and they desperately grabbed on to it, for it might be a long time before they saw it again. Change was coming to Genoa City, for better or worse; Adam’s death had changed everything for everyone. What they shared tonight served to strengthen each one for the times coming ahead. Victor would know what he had to do for Nicholas. Jack would come to a decision about his marriage. And Nikki would regain the strength she needed to keep her family going. And it all began with just a little bit of faith.
