A/N: I'm not sure if in this point in the story if JR and Sue Ellen are sleeping in separate bedrooms so I'm assuming that they do.
Bobby was gone. His beloved baby brother was gone, just like that. Right before his very eyes, his brother had flatlined, and there was nothing the doctors could do to bring him back. Time had stood still for JR, Ellie, Clayton, Pam, Donna, Jenna, and Ray. Their beloved Bobby had perished and they had witnessed the most unimaginable act of cruelty that life could bestow upon them. Could this be just some lie? The first to leave were Clayton and Ellie; Clayton feared her heart couldn't bear the sight of her son lying in that condition. Ray and Donna made their peace, consoling each other through their tears. Ray offered to be of whatever assistance he could to Ellie, who only wanted to be with Clayton at the moment. It was assumed that everyone would meet at Southfork. Jenna would go tend to Charlie and join the family later.
Pam and JR were the only ones left in the room. Pam refused to let go of her beloved's hand.
"We were going to be married. We should have been married. He was my everything. I love this man. This should not have happened. I just don't believe it. How can she do this to us? He had a family. He had a home. He had a life. He had so much to live for and now he's gone. How can I go on without him? How can I look at another sunset again knowing that I won't be sharing it with Bobby? How can I eat dinner tonight knowing that I was supposed to be having it with him? And how am I supposed to tell our son that his father won't be coming home? Tell me that, JR? How am I supposed to go on when the man that I love is lying here, never to leave this hospital again. I can't do it. I can't leave him alone. I can't stand the thought of losing him. Don't take him away from me, JR. Don't take him away from our son." Pam said, single tears streaming down her face.
"Now Pamela, you listen to me." JR said, with his own face stained with tears. "You'll get through this. You're a Ewing. You always have been and you always will be. Bobby needs you to be strong. You have little Christopher to think about now. He needs his mamma. I know you'll do the right thing and make Bobby proud. We all will. We can't allow ourselves to think about why this happened. The fact is, it did happen and that woman paid for what she did. She took something from us that can never be brought back. All we can do is try to go on the best we can. You and Christopher are part of the family and don't you be forgetting that. Now don't you be torturing yourself anymore than you already are. Go on home and take care of that boy of yours. He needs you more than ever."
Pam's lip trembled as she tried to think of a response to her former brother-in-law. She knew he was right. Before she left, she took one last look at Bobby and she broke down again.
"Now, Pam, don't you be doing that. Focus on your son. He needs you right now. Looking at him isn't going to bring him back. I want you to call a cab and go get your son and get out to the ranch. Promise me you'll do that."
Pam nodded. "But there's one more thing I have to do first."
She walked over to Bobby's lifeless body and kissed his lips one final time. "I love you. I'll always love you." She whispered."
And then she turned around and left the room.
And so JR was left alone in the room with his brother. Some hospital workers entered the room, preparing to take the body, but JR shook his head.
"Give me a minute."
"Bobby, I know that you and I have had some differences. Hell, we've fought most of the time, most of the time about stuff that didn't add up to a hill of beans. Mamma always got after us to try to get along better. But I didn't listen to her. I didn't listen to anyone. I was determined to get my way, the only way I knew how. Remember when I was shot and you took over Ewing Oil? I couldn't just let you run it. No, I ran interference every chance I could. You may have thought you were running it but I was calling the shots. And now…"
A single tear ran down his face.
"I don't know if I would do it differently." JR conceded. "I'd like to say that I would. But Bobby, I'm not that kind of man. That's the difference between you and me. You do everything above board. If you can't look someone in the eye while doing it, you don't do it. And that's all well and good, but that's not my style. Little brother, I'd like to say I taught you a lot about business. But you taught yourself what you know. You had your own style and it worked out alright for you in the end. It's not the way I would have done things. You got us a refinery. You got us back in with the cartel. You did Daddy proud. You found your legs, so I gotta give you some credit that I wish I would have. I'm not sorry about too many things, but I'm sorry I underestimated you. The Ewings just aren't going to be the same without you. I'm not going to be the same without you. You see, I'm a little worried now. That's right, I said worried. You were always the good one, the one that balanced me out. And now that you're gone, I'm worried that you took the best part of me with you. What's left to stop me now? "
A woman's voice took him by surprise. "You'll be stopped. Bobby will live on. You'll be surprised."
"Sue Ellen, what are you doing here?"
"I got here as soon as I heard the news. JR, I'm so sorry."
She walked over and wrapped her arms around her husband, who gladly accepted her embrace.
He was a little bit embarrassed, wondering how much she had overheard.
"Bobby meant a great deal to the family." Sue Ellen stated.
"d**n right he did. He was always Daddy's favorite. I hate to say it but I'm glad he's not around to see this day. It would have crushed him. "
"Mr. Ewing," The workers came in again. "We really need to take him now."
"Okay. You do that." And so JR and Sue Ellen stood in silence as they watched his brother be covered up and rolled away. Sue Ellen wiped away the tears from his eyes.
"Let's go home, darlin'." She whispered.

Somehow, they had survived that first day. Ellie had been inconsolable, as was Pam. Pam had focused on Christopher and had somehow found the strength to get through the day. Ellie had made frequent trips to her room alone. JR made it through the day with plenty of bourbon. Sue Ellen had avoided alcohol, much to JR's relief. The last thing he needed to worry about was a drunken scene on this darkest of days. Finally, it was bedtime, John Ross was in bed and JR and Sue Ellen had taken to bed.
JR heard a knock on his door.
"Come in."
In came Sue Ellen wearing a blue nightgown with a matching blue robe. "I thought that you might like some company tonight."
JR thought about it for a moment. Did he want to be alone with his thoughts? Part of him just wanted to drink away all of the pain he was feeling but then again he could use the touch, even the innocent touch of a woman. And he knew that Sue Ellen knew him better than anyone else on earth, and could provide him the understanding that he was so desperate for at the moment. She knew his moods, his thoughts, his weaknesses, his needs. She could anticipate his feelings before he could even feel them. Tonight he definitely did not want to go through this grief process alone.
"Come in, sugar." He patted the bed, inviting her over.
"How are you?"
"How do you think I'm doing?"
"If you're going to be cross with me, "Sue Ellen stated, starting to get up," I'm going to leave."
JR placed his hand over hers. "Don't go, sugar. Stay."
There was the man-child that she so desperately loved. She could see the begging in his eyes for her to stay. Even when he spoke harshly with her, his eyes always did speak volumes to her. Tonight was going to be a bad one for him, and he would most likely take it out on her. But she just most certainly wouldn't allow it. She would be anything he needed, but she was not going to be his whipping girl. He had too many other girls to choose from for that.
"Your mamma's holding up awfully well." She started.
"Mmmm. Mamma? Yes. She's a tough bird. I'm worried about her. I don't plan on leaving her side anytime soon. I'm glad Gary flew in. She really is worrying herself sick to death about this."
"Just be good to her, JR."
"Oh, I will. Don't you worry your pretty little head about that. Nothing's going to come between me and my mamma."
"How's Gary handling it?"
"Not too well. He and Bobby always got along pretty well. I hope he sticks around longer than just a couple of days. It would break mamma's heart if he wound up in California before the funeral started. But it wouldn't surprise me. He's always had an aversion to Southfork." JR commented.
Sue Ellen sat next to JR. "Can I pour you a drink?"
"That'd be fine."
She gave him a drink, then sat next to him on his bed, rubbing his back as he sipped his drink. "Darlin, I want to say thank you."
"You're welcome. Can I get you another one?" She stood up.
"Not for the drink. I mean for being here for me and my family. Losing Daddy and now Bobby are just the most terrible things this family's ever been through and I'm just glad I've got you to go through it with me. I look at Pam and she's all alone now. Jenna's alone. Ray's got Donna. Mamma's got Clayton. And I've got you. I don't know how I'd made it through today if I didn't have you, taking care of my son and being good to my family. You're something else, Sue Ellen. You know that?" He gently brushed her cheek, which was now wet with a single tear.
"You're pretty terrific yourself. I saw the way you treat your mamma and the way you were with John Ross today. I know you were good with Pam which I know was hard on you. Bobby would be really proud of you. Your daddy'd be real proud of you right now, JR."
JR looked at his wife as if he'd seen her for the first time. He tenderly touched her face, and her lip trembled. She licked her lip, and then he ran his finger across her lip. Sue Ellen kissed that finger. He brushed it against her lip again, and she repeated the kiss. JR sat the glass down on the nightstand and took her face in with both of his hands. Her eyes widened and the feel of his touch. He brushed her bangs away from her face. She involuntarily sighed as he traced her cheekbones with his thumbs. She closed her eyes as he leaned in for a kiss. She did not protest, rather, she kissed him back, gently at first, then madly.
The lovemaking was fast and desperate, aching to forget the pain that they were both in. JR was in total control, with Sue Ellen ever so willing to follow his every move. There would be no slow and steady moves tonight. Everything was fast, furious, and ready. Kisses flew at an anxious pace. Clothes were torn off with no awareness of where they might land. Sue Ellen was wound up being multiply satisfied, each time being more intense then the time before. Finally JR was able to release his own pleasure, and they both collapsed on the bed, exhausted.
What they shared did not take away from the grief that JR was feeling. It was an intense experience that momentarily replaced the intense feelings that he was already experiencing. And it served to strengthen the bond that he shared with his wife, who would be right be his side throughout this nightmarish ordeal that began in such a tragedy. No longer content to sleep in separate bedrooms, from that night onward, Sue Ellen moved back into JR's room, and the two grew closer than ever. It would take a long time for the grief process to allow the couple to heal, but with the help of each other and the renewed love that they'd found in each other, they'd found strength in each other that helped them to move on. And JR learned to deal with his grief on a day by day basis, He threw himself in work, of course, and alcohol, but there was only one woman he turned to help him heal. And that woman was the true love of his life. Bobby would be so proud.
