This is set during Swan Song.
Ray loved Donna, why couldn’t she see this? Why did everything have to be so difficult? She’d always been there when he needed her the most. That was one thing he could take to the bank. Even though he didn’t deserve her and he knew it, she’d always stood by him. When he’d lost his father and nearly self-destructed, Donna still believed in him. Somehow she saw the best in him even when he didn’t. Ray even cheated on her and she stood by him. When he went on trial for murder she never thought twice about staying with him. So why now, why did she want to leave him?
He just couldn’t imagine what he would do without her. And the timing of it- not that there was ever a good time for a woman to leave a man- but why now? She was carrying his child, and she knew that he’d always dreamt of becoming a father. This child meant everything to him. Once the baby was born he wanted to be there for it, and not be a part time father. That might work for some men, but not him. He wanted to provide security and comfort, everything a real father should. He would always love his child, but he was angry that Donna could even think of denying him the right to be there for his child every day of its life.
Ray knew that he had his faults- he was stubborn and liked things his way. But he was willing to make things work. He would do anything to get Donna to stay. But she wasn’t having any of it. All of those things she’d accused him of being he could say the same of her. When you had two independent people it made for a rough marriage. But now during her pregnancy she should learn to lean on him as he had her for so long. But what people should do and what they actually did were two very different things as he had found out.
How could he make her see that he would do make anything to make this right? He would do anything- say anything- if she would just give in, just a little. Maybe he took for granted that she would always be there for him. Donna was the best thing to ever happen to him and he knew it. For weeks now he had been walking on eggshells trying to find the right thing to say to her but nothing seemed to come out right. All they did was fight, and he kept pushing her away. All he knew was that he was scared that the next argument would be the last, and he didn’t know what he would do if that would happen.
But in a moment everything had changed. Katherine Wentworth had killed Ray’s brother. As Ray and Donna watched helplessly, Bobby asked everyone to be good to each other as he took his last breath. Donna fell into her husband’s arms as they both wept for the lost brother. This couldn’t be happening. Bobby was gone. Both of them felt so helpless as they realized that everyone’s lives were forever changed.
Not a word was spoken on the way home. Donna was taken back to the moment she learned that Jock’s plane had gone missing. She hadn’t wanted to say it aloud, but even then she had known that he wasn’t coming home. But she couldn’t tell it to her husband. And now she had to see Ray go through this again. This just wasn’t fair. How much could one man go through in a lifetime? Bobby was a good man, an honest man who loved his family. And now he was gone. And suddenly nothing else mattered.
When they got home Ray went to the shower, and Donna could hear his cries through the door. She couldn’t control her own tears. She wanted to go in and join her husband, but she wasn’t sure that she would be welcome. She knew that she hadn’t been the easiest person in the world to live with recently. There had been problems, so many problems in her marriage. But did they even matter any more?
Ray came out and no one could speak. She could see the hurt on his face and her heart broke for him. Shaking her head, she ran to him and held him like there was no tomorrow. They broke down in each other’s arms, speaking the silent language of hurt that only two people in mourning could understand. This was a dark day for the Ewing family, and they both knew that they needed each other more than ever.
Finally they sat on the couch.
“Oh Ray… I’m so sorry,” Donna finally spoke up.
“He was my brother….he was the best man I knew. I don’t understand this. What was she doing here anyways? Why was she so bent on destroying him? What did he do wrong? He never hurt anybody. All he tried to do was be good to everyone that knew him. He was my best friend, Donna. And now…”
Ray didn’t have to finish his sentence but they both knew what he was going to say. Bobby was dead. He was the victim of a senseless murder.
“I wish there were something I could say to help you. I feel so helpless right now. You’ve been through so much. All of a sudden nothing we’ve been through is all that important is it? I love you Ray and I want to be here for you. I don’t want to fight any more. I want us to work together to make it through this. I know you need me whether you realize it or not and I need you. Our child needs us. I want us to make things work. And I’ll do whatever it takes to go forward. I’ll forget about the past. We have so much to hold on to. We have each other. We have the baby. We have our family. We have got to be strong and not fall apart, not now. I love you, Ray. Let me help you.” Donna took his hand and wondered what his reaction would be.
Ray couldn’t think about the future at the moment, nor could he think about the past. All he could think about was how much pain he was in and how he would give anything to make it stop. As the tears fell from his eyes, he allowed himself to be held by the one person who knew him better than anyone in the world. She loved him, and he loved her. He placed his hand on her stomach and felt a twinge of hope for the Ewing family. She also placed her hand beside his. As they sat there together, they both knew that this child would bond them forever. The love that they had for this child would get them through this difficult time. Neither of them knew what the future held, but both felt grateful that it included the other.
