This is an alternate ending to The Letter- Bobby and Pam’s breakup episode- the way I wish it would have happened.
Pam couldn’t believe it that she’d made it this far. After all of the false starts through their split today was going to be the day that she would ask Bobby to come back home. After every thing they’d been through, she had finally decided that she just couldn’t live without him any longer. He had agreed to meet her at the park. There was no turning back. She knew that she had hurt him deeply, but she had been hurt too. The fighting over Ewing Oil had turned Bobby into someone she didn’t recognize. Then there was JR. He had vowed to do everything in his power to keep Pam and Bobby apart. And then there was her mother’s death; that had been the most painful time in her life. But now she was beginning to heal and was ready to face life on life’s terms. And that included Bobby.
She wanted her husband to come back to her. It wouldn’t be easy; there had been a lot of hurtful words said and feelings were hurt. It had devastated Bobby when Pam had asked for a divorce. He’d never come to terms with that, and he had asked her to reconsider. Now she had, and she only hoped that he would welcome her with open arms. Now Christopher could have his parents back together again, what greater gift could a parent give a child? She could hardly wait to hear what Bobby had to say.
She had never stopped loving Bobby; that was never an issue. They had done enough loving to last a lifetime. She would never forget how happy they were when they first married. She was so nervous about being accepted into the Ewing family. She didn’t know how they would take a Barnes marrying one of them. But Bobby had been so reassuring. If he had any reservations, he didn’t let on. He made her feel as if she was the only woman in the world he would have married. They had been so naïve back then. They didn’t know what they were getting into. If they would have known what they were getting into with Cliff and JR would they do it all over again? Pam would have liked to have thought so.
Bobby was so strong, so handsome. Sometimes she couldn’t believe he was hers. Everyone said they made the perfect pair. But they didn’t really listen to what everyone said. They couldn’t afford to, because there were plenty of people who said they shouldn’t have gotten married in the first place, their own relatives included. They had certainly defied the odds to get where they were at before the separation. Cliff and JR were certainly betting against them, even manipulating to separate them. And Pam had listened to them at times. But she would never listen to them again. Her marriage meant everything to her, and she could no longer afford to pay attention to the naysayers. But she couldn’t just stand by idly while they plotted against her. She would beat them at their own game. But the best revenge would be reuniting with Bobby. Watching JR’s face as she walked through Southfork arm in arm with Bobby would be priceless. That would teach him a lesson for ever messing with Pamela Barnes Ewing.
Pam and Bobby met up at the park where it seemed like they used to meet up at two lifetimes ago. Pam felt her heart race at the sight of her beloved Bobby. He looked so handsome as usual. How would he react to her announcement? Would he tell her that he loved her too or would he tell her that he moved on? That thought hadn’t even crossed her mind until now. The very thought panicked her, and suddenly she felt very nervous. What if she couldn’t go through with this? She had to, for Christopher’s sake. He deserved a chance at having his family back together, and she owed it to herself to find out how Bobby felt about her.
Pam took Bobby by the hand and looked him in the eye.
“Bobby, I know how hard these past few months have been on you. I know I haven’t made them easy for you or for anyone. Christopher has felt the tension between us and for that I’m truly sorry. If there were some way I could go back and undo what’s been done I would, but I can’t. I needed this time to think. I’ve hurt you, and I am so sorry. I never meant to, I and I don’t think that I can forgive myself. I’m not asking you to forgive me. I’m asking you to try to understand where I’m coming from. I was tired, so tired from everything. I didn’t understand you anymore. I just lost my mother. I was sick of all the fighting. I lost myself. I lost track of me and you. And through all of this I realized that I still love you. Maybe it’s unfair of me to ask you this now but I don’t think it’s too late for us. I’d like to come back home. I don’t’ want to forget everything we’ve been through but I want to start again. We worked too hard to build something worth fighting for and I don’t want anything to come between us. What I’m asking is, Bobby- do you still love me?”
Bobby looked at the ground, then at his wife. “I never expected you to say this. I have been preparing myself for the divorce. This has been one of the most difficult times of my life. If you would have asked me a year ago if you thought that I’d ever lose you the answer would have been no. But you left and you took away my son. I was crushed. Pam, you hurt me. But I still love you more than ever. I’ve never stopped loving you. I’ve been praying that you would come to your senses and would ask to come back home! I can’t believe it- we’re a family again,” he laughed, standing up, taking her by the hand.
Pam stood up, laughing with joy. She delighted in Bobby’s happiness. This was the moment she had been praying for all day. He loved her, and she was coming home. They had both finally seen the light. Now nothing could stop them- nothing except their foolish pride. Love really was better the second time around.
