Reid had called Luke up, trying like mad to get a hold of him. When Luke finally answered, Reid was almost in hysterics.
“Sorry, man, my phone died. I think I new charger. What..”
Luke didn't have a chance to explain himself.
Reid was really upset. “I need you over here right now.”
“What- I thought you said Sanda's at work...isn't it her first day since having little Jude?” Luke asked.
“It is...oh I don't know what to do. Just come over here will you?”
Luke chuckled. “All right. Give me a few. Want me to grab some wings and a pizza?”
“No. Just come here already!” Reid answered as he slammed the phone.
A few minutes later, a very worried Luke arrived, and Reid was waiting outside, carrying a bundled up five month old baby Jude, Reid's son with his wife Sanda.
“It's a good thing Sanda's not here,” Luke smiled. “If she saw you with your baby outside without his hat on..”
“Ssh. Come in here!” Reid pleaded.
Luke looked at the baby. “He's fine. What's wrong that you turned down food?”
Reid's hair was tussled, he looked very stressed out. “It's Jude. He's been crying and I don't know what's wrong with him. He only fell asleep a minute ago.”
Luke smiled. “You look like you need a break. Let me hold the little guy.”
“Please don't wake him,” Reid sighed then sat down.
“You're a doctor- you should know whether or not there's something wrong with him. Have you examined him?” Luke asked.
“Yes. He seems fine.”
“You feed him?”
“He only ate a bit of his baby food. Sanda made some fruits and vegetables and put it in the blender, and she even bottled it up really well. I love that she wants our son to eat healthy.”
Luke smiled. “If she can't get you to eat healthy she'll save your son.”
Reid shot him a dirty look.
Luke couldn't help but smile. “he's been changed, right?”
“Like every other minute it seems!”
Luke put his hand on the baby's forehead. “he seems a bit warm, not really that bad though.”
“Oh god, Jude's sick. He's sick and it's all my fault. Sanda's going to hate me!”
“She doesn't hate you.”
“She's a good mommy. She'd never let Jude get sick.”
“He's fine,” Luke reassured Reid as they sat down on the couch. “She'll be home soon. For now, you can talk to me.”
“Thanks, but I'm worried about my son.”
So they waited in silence, until a half hour later Sanda arrived home.
“Hi,” she greeted Luke. She kissed her son on the forehead then walked over to kiss her husband Reid. “how are my two favorite boys?'
Then she saw Reid was upset. “What's wrong honey?”
“I...I'm a horrible dad.”
She looked at Luke in surprise. “What is going on?”
“The baby, he...you're going to be mad at me.”
She touched his cheek. “Just talk to me.”
“The baby,” Reid sighed. “Jude cried for hours tonight. I tried and tried to comfort him. I tried to feed him, I gave him a bath..”
Sanda smiled. “it looks like you need a bath. You have baby carrots in your hair,” she laughed.
“Sanda, I'm a bad dad.”
“No, you're not. I haven't told you this, but the other day, he cried for a long time for me too.”
Reid looked at her in surprise. “What?”
“It took me a while to figure out he was teething. He still hasn't cut his tooth, but his gums, if you feel them, they are red and pretty hard.”
Luke smiled. “See, Reid...its okay. It's normal for babies to fuss when they cry.”
Then Reid surprised them both by wiping away tears.
“Sanda...I know you've been wanting to go back to work. But...Jude needs you. He's a good boy. I try but nobody knows exactly what he needs but his mommy. I'm a doctor and I couldn't figure out that he was teething. You don't have to work. I know you like working..”
Sanda laughed. “I actually didn't want to go back to work.”
Reid looked at her. “But you like your job!”
“I like what I do, yes. But I love being Jude's mommy. I wanted to go back to work to help save money because you've been talking about going to Spain for a vacation, and I just wanted to make your dreams come true.”
He looked in her eyes. “My dream is to have my favorite girl taking care of my favorite boy. Spain can wait. Jude will only be little once.”
“You mean it? You don't mind if I stay home?”
Reid kissed her. “I want whatever makes you happy.”
“You make me happy. Our son makes me happy.” they looked at the sleeping Jude.
“Reid?” she questioned. “Do you mind if he sleeps with us...just tonight?”
Reid looked at Luke. Every night Sanda said the same thing...it would just be 'for that night' that the baby slept with them. But it made Sanda happy being so close to her baby, and he would do anything to make her happy.
“Yes, sweetie. Our son can sleep with us.”
“Where am I going to sleep?” Luke laughed.
“Sorry, the only man I'll share my wife Sanda with is our son. You can take the couch,” Reid responded.
And for a little bit, Reid and Sanda, who was holding baby Jude, and Luke, sat on the couch, grateful for their friends, family, and each other.
