Melinda, Jessie and Sanda had been great friends for a long, long time. They'd been their through births, heartaches, jobs, and a few drinks between friends.
Melinda was a single mom of two beautiful kids. It wasn't easy, but she kept on going, especially with the help of her friends. Jessie was always dating guy after guy, and it was hard for Melinda and Sanda to see, not because they weren't happy for their friend, but they wanted to find the right guy, and also that Jessie would find the right guy for herself as well.
They were meeting for drinks, Sanda was upset and so Melinda found a babysitter for her kids. They were at Rooster's, and both Jessie and Melinda could tell Sanda had been crying.
“What's wrong?” Melinda asked as she took a sip of her drink.
“I found out that they are having budget problems at my job.”
“You're a great nurse,” Jessie smiled. “They'd be a fool to let you go.”
“Well, they must be fools, because I don't have a job anymore,” Sanda cried.
“you want to come stay with me and the kids? It will be crowded, but you can have the bed and I'll take the couch,” Melinda offered.
Sanda smiled. “I couldn't do that. It's hard enough for you to make ends meet with your kids. They should come first.”
Jessie put her hand on Sanda's. “You can stay with me. It's no problem. Take as long as you like to find a job, we'll be fine.”
Sanda wiped her eyes. “I don't know. I just don't know...” and she took her napkin and started to wipe her eyes.
Melinda and Jessie looked at each other. “Is this about John?”
Sanda nodded. “I know you guys think I'm silly. I know he was just a coworker, but he was more than that. I was in love with him.”
Jessie looked at her. “Love...that's a hard word. You never even went on a date, did you?”
Sanda looked up. “You don't have to rub it in.”
“It's okay. I understand. Even after my divorce I loved my ex, even though he'd moved on and didn't love me anymore,” Melinda sighed. “Sometimes the heart can't help what it wants.”
“I never met anyone like him,” Sanda declared. “Jessie, you don't know...you have no problems meeting guys. You're funny and outgoing and so pretty...me, I'm shy and I'm so scared to get hurt. I wanted this so bad, I just know if John and I had a little more time...”
Jessie and Melinda looked at each other. “Sanda,” Melinda sighed. “You and John had been working together for almost a year. How much time did he need to ask you out?”
Then Melinda and Jessie felt so bad as they watched Sanda run to the bathroom. She was hurt, and they only prayed that she would find the strength to keep going. They would be there for her, but right now as they sipped their drinks, they knew that there wasn't much they could do for Sanda's broken heart.
