Jessie was tired. She was tired of traveling, of struggling to survive, and most of all, she was tired of being alone. It wasn't so bad when she was in a group, but after a mass attack by the zombies she had thought she couldn't go on. The hard part was when she realized her best friends Melinda and Sanda were missing. Twelve people had died, so it was hard for her not to think the worst.
Today was an especially hard day. Today would have been Sanda's birthday, and all she had wanted was to spend some time with Melinda and Jessie. Even though Sanda was missing, Jessie carried around a gift for her. It wasn't much- but once when Jessie went through a house looking for food she found in the bathroom a tube of red lipstick. Sanda would look so beautiful in it.
As she sat down to eat an old can of peaches she had found, she decided to look for the lipstick, maybe wear some in Sanda's honor. Not that she had anyone to impress, but she wanted to feel like Sanda and Melinda were still with her.
Digging slowly through her knapsack at first, she started to panic. The lipstick was gone! She couldn't believe it. She'd held on to it for 33 days, and now it was nowhere to be found.
Suddenly she felt very, very alone. It was hard for her to even want to go on any longer. What was the point? Any time she got close to someone they disappeared.
This was the first time in months she allowed herself to cry. She covered her mouth, careful not to make any noise that would alert the zombies, but still, she could feel her heart breaking just a little more by the second. On top of that, it was starting to rain, and she had no where to go.
Startling her, a hand was placed on her shoulder. She didn't know what to do. What if it were a zombie? But then, remembering the day Sanda and Melinda and her promised each other they'd get through this together, it dawned on her that it might be one or both of them. She looked up and started to scream.
The man took his hand and covered her mouth with it. “Ssh..” he ordered.
He was terrifying looking. His hair was long, almost a beard and worse, he had an eyepatch. Oh God, she thought. This was it.
Before she could speak, he smiled and took her hand and helped her up. “It's okay. I'm not going to hurt you. But you need to come with me.”
“I don't go anywhere with people I don't know..” Jessie snapped.
“Look, it's getting dark and you know as well as I do they come out right about this time. Do you want my help or not?”
She looked around and before she could answer he picked her up and carried her against his chest.
Jessie started to hit him. “Look behind you, silly girl,” he ordered.
She saw what made him take her like that. There were zombies, and she knew at that moment that he was her only chance of survival.
“Don't panic. I know somewhere...I have somewhere we can go. You just have to stay calm and trust me.”
“It would help if you would put me down!”
Smiling, he put her down and grabbed her hand and they both ran as far as they could. He wasn't lying. He had a camper and a tent and a small fire for heat, not enough to attract any zombies. Once they stopped running, she caught her breath.
“Thank you...you didn't have to do that,” she replied.
“You wouldn't have had a chance by yourself. What in the world were you thinking coming to the woods by yourself?”
“It looks like you're here, so maybe I should ask you the same thing,” Jessie retorted.
“Are you hungry?”
“What?”
He repeated himself. “I have food..not much but you're welcome to join me. You'll have to go to the camper with me...that's where its at.”
Knowing she didn't have any other option she agreed. “My name is Jessie. Do you have a name?”
He paused and left Jessie wondering what for. “Brian. My name is Brian,” he sighed.
“Well, Brian, let's go see what you have. And thank you...”
He nodded and then the two of them headed inside the camper, safe at least for the night.

Jessie and Sanda I know this might be depressing but trust me things will be okay. Jessie I know you hate him but there is a story I want to tell, I hope you will like it!

Ch 2
So at first things were a bit uneasy between them. Jessie had gotten used to being by herself, and she suspected that Brian had to too. Still disoriented and disheveled from the chase, she tried to gather her thoughts before asking any questions.
“Jessie...something troubling you? You haven't said two words other than thank you for the can of franks and beans I gave you. And that was twenty minutes ago,” Brian started. He got up and reached for her and she abruptly pulled away.
“Relax. I told you I wouldn't hurt you. I was just getting your empty can,” he nodded towards it. “I may be a bachelor, and this camper isn't much, but the end of the world is no reason to let your house go. You never know who might drop by,” he chuckled, referring to the zombies.
In spite of herself, she found herself smiling. She wasn't ready to laugh- not until she found her friends. But this was a bad situation so she figured she should try to make the best of it.
“Brian, may I ask you a question?” Jessie asked tentatively.
“Depends,” he growled, then seeing her hurt look on her face, he softened the tone of his voice. “Go ahead.”
“I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to be nosy...”
“It's okay. I'm just not used to company. Especially not with such a pretty young lady.”
Jessie blushed. “Maybe I should take the tent tonight..”
“No!” Brian replied a little too quickly. “I'm not going to try anything. I just...”
He turned and stared out the window.
She reached over and touched his hand, catching him off guard. “Hey, Brian...it's okay. I'm sorry. It's just that...I'm not really used to being around people. I just feel a little lost these days,” Jessie sighed.
“I know what you mean. More than you know.”
“Do you want to talk? I may not have the answers but Melinda and Sanda always came to me with their problems. Especially Melinda. She's pretty sensitive and just really needed someone to talk to once in a while.”
He looked at her closely. “Melinda and Sanda- were they your sisters?”
“Are. They still are! And no, we're not sisters, but we might as well be. They're the only ones who risked their lives to make sure I survive in this crazy world. Melinda, she had a good boyfriend, but he was a leader of a group. They needed to move on. Melinda wanted to marry him but she chose to stay behind with me,” Jessie began to cry. “And Sanda...she just understands me. I don't' have to explain myself to her- she just gets me. They're probably the only two people in the world who did.”
Once again he moved forward, but this time he cupped her hands with his. And this time, she did not pull away.
“Do,” he said softly.
“What?”
He then took her chin and led her make eye contact with him. This time she did not even flinch by his eye patch.
“Do. They still do get you. They're out there, somewhere. And I'm going to help you find them.”
She shook her head. “I can't...I can't let you do that. You have a camper, gasoline is hard to come by. You have this camp...you can survive in this world. I can't.”
“Jessie...you can survive. I'll make sure of that.” and then, catching her by surprise, he kissed her gently on the lips, just for a brief minute, but enough to make her pull back.
“I...I really think I should sleep outside. I'll see you in the morning.”
With that, she walked away, not even bothering to look back.

ch 3 After a few minutes, Jessie realized she was really scared, but she couldn't bring herself to face Brian. She wasn't sure what had happened to make him want to kiss her. She couldn't lie- it was kind of a nice distraction from all the bad things that had happened to her, but right now she couldn't handle getting involved with someone who just might disappear at any moment. It was bad enough that she didn't know what happened to her best friends- the thought of giving her heart only to have it broken was just too much to take. It was dark and scary out, but she didn't know what to do. Jessie knew that, by herself, she didn't have much of a chance out there. So she made up her mind that she would leave first thing in the morning before Brian even woke up. “Jessie?” She looked up to see him coming outside to check on her. The glare of the fire illustrated his eyepatch, and she had so many questions, but didn't think it was appropriate to ask. “Jessie...I'm sorry if I scared you in any way. It's just that...never mind. I guess you wouldn't understand. But it won't happen again. Please...stay with me.” She looked at him curiously. Was he desperate for any company, was he a lonely man? Obviously he'd lost a lot in his life, but what or who, Jessie did not know. “I'm sorry I freaked out, Brian. It's just that..it's been so long since a man kissed me. I lost my boyfriend about a year ago. That was how I got to know Sanda and Melinda. They found me all alone on a street and they took me into her group. Melinda told her boyfriend that they needed me, and that I needed them, and it was because of them I managed to safe all this time.” “We'll find them. I promise you that. I just...I just want to keep you safe.” She walked over to him. “Why? Why should I matter to you?” He looked down at the ground, and to Jessie, he looked a bit sad. “I'm sorry...I don't want to make you feel bad,” she sighed. “It's not you. It's me. There are things...Jessie do you ever look back at your life and wish you had done things differently?” Brian asked. “I think we all do. We all have regrets.” “Yeah...Yeah.” “It's okay, Brian. Whatever it is you're keeping from me, you can tell me. I won't judge you, I promise. That's what Melinda said she always loved about me.” “And Sanda?” Brian changed the subject. “You might think it's silly...but at night, to pass the time, we all would stay up late and tell each other stories. It was nice, just being able to express ourselves like that. Sanda would always tell these romantic stories about how we would all fall in love and have babies...I guess that would be a bad thing these days,” Jessie responded, thinking of her friends. She saw the way he flinched when she said the word “babies”. “Do you have children, Brian?” He started to speak but finally shook his head no. “It's getting late. Come on, I have a little cot you can sleep on.” As she followed him, she wondered what he was hiding. Had he had kids? A wife? What was so bad that he couldn't tell her about himself? She crawled up on the cot and covered herself in the blanket he'd provided. “Good night, Jessie.” “Good night...and thank you,” she smiled. Their eyes met, but then he quickly walked away to go to his cot. As Jessie tried to fall asleep, she said her nightly prayer, hoping that Sanda and Melinda had found someone as nice as Brian to take them in. TBC I am so glad you two like this story. Don't worry I have surprises in store for all of us.

ch 4
The next morning, Jessie tried to look for something in her knapsack to give her new friend for breakfast, but she couldn't find much.
She looked around for any signs of who this Brian was. There was not much to reveal anything about him.
Accidentally, Jessie knocked over the cup of water he'd given her before she went to bed. Not wanting to wake Brian, she started looking in the kitchen drawers for a towel when something caught her eye.
It was a picture.
It was Brian, without his eye patch, and a woman and a young child.
Now Jessie felt really bad, because he must have lost his family in all this. When would this all end?
“Give me that,” she heard him order as he came from his cabin. He took it and looked at her. “What are you doing snooping around like that?”
“I'm sorry...I didn't mean to...I was just looking for a towel...”
“Next time if you need something just ask.”
“Why don't you want to talk about them, Brian?” Jessie approached him and gently touched his face and looked straight at him. “You had a family. Don't you want to remember...”
“I don't want to remember anything! Don't you get it, we only have today. Nothing is guaranteed! Nothing! If we look back at the past then that will just get us killed!”
Jessie felt bad she started running into the woods. She didn't' know where she was going, but she felt so bad for making him angry. It made her feel uncomfortable but she knew that he must be hurting to react like that.
“Jessie, wait!” Brian called as he ran after her. “Please...I'm sorry. I didn't mean to talk to you like that..”
She turned and stared at him. “What do you want from me? One minute you're kissing me and the next you're yelling at me! I don't know what I should do when I'm around you!”
“Jessie...please. We can talk. Just come back to the camper with me.”
“Why? It seems like I just annoy you all the time,” Jessie retorted.
“It's not that. It's complicated. I did have a wife once, and a daughter. My wife...she died before all this...all those creatures happened. And I did have a daughter. Penny was her name. I loved her so much...so much...”
“It's okay. I don't want to push you into talking about it if it hurts too badly,” Jessie gently touched his face.
“All I know is that I'm alone now, and I figured I was going to die out here alone. But with you here...I'm not so lonely. And it kind of feels good to tell you the truth.” Brian turned away. “There, you wanted me to talk. If you want to leave I'll pack some food for you.”
“No, Brian. I'll stay. I'll try not to get in your way if you try not to yell at me anymore. Deal?” Jessie smiled and held out her hand.
He looked at her for a minute and then shook it. “Come on...I have a secret stash of some chocolates I found. Care to join me?”
She nodded and followed him back to the camper. Jessie didn't know what to think of her new friend, but all she knew was that she had to keep looking for Melinda and Sanda.

ch 5
So Jessie and Brian returned to the camper, true to his word ,he offered her chocolate. She hadn't had anything sweet for longer than she could remember. She smiled, lost in her thoughts. Melinda loved chocolates, especially Reece's cups. Jessie wanted to laugh as she remembered how proud Melinda had been when she found a Reece's cup and gave it to her boyfriend Craig. It wasn't much, but she had tried so hard.
“Hey...” Brian touched her face. “Earth to Jessie. It seems as if you're a million miles away. Is it me? Am I making you uncomfortable?”
Jessie opened her eyes. “No. It's okay. I was just thinking about my friends, where they are...if they're okay.”
“Listen to me. We'll find them. I promise you that.”
“Why?” Jessie questioned. “It seems to me like you have some things that you don't want to talk about, and I'm not even sure if you want me here. Why on earth would you risk your life for people you don't even know?”
He sighed and relaxed in his seat. “I don't know...think of it as atonement.”
She looked at him curiously. What had he done that he needed atonement for? She wanted to know, but was intuitive enough to know that prying would only cause her to alienate herself from him. Instead she surprised him by reaching for his hand.
He looked up and into her eyes with curiosity. “I'm glad you're here, Jessie.”
“Me too.” And to her surprise, she meant it. “Tell me about Penny.”
When she saw the look of hurt on his face, she tried to change the subject. “It's okay. I'm sorry for asking. I promised you I wouldn't, but I know you must miss her terribly. It's okay for you to still love your family.”
Brian ran his hands through his hair, sighing deeply as he thought about how to proceed. “She was beautiful, absolutely beautiful. She was nine, too young to deserve any of what had happened to her. When Joan- her mother- was still around they would play together all the time, always making up songs. I'd come home and once in awhile dinner would be late because Joan had got so caught up in playing with our daughter...Sometimes I didn't understand. I liked things my way. If I only knew then what I know now...”
.Jessie smiled and to their surprise, she hugged him. He hadn't been expecting that, and wasn't quite sure how to react. .
“I'm sorry..” Jessie stammered. “I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable...its just that I hate to see my friends hurting...”
“Thank you, Jessie. That means a lot. More than you know.”
“Hold on. I'll be right back. I have something for you.”
“Jessie, don't worry...it's not necessary...”
“I'll be back in a second.”
When Jessie came back, she smiled. “Close your eyes.”
He looked at her and then she realized that she'd forgotten about his eye patch. “Oh my god, I'm so sorry, Brian! I didn't mean...I didn't think...”
“It's okay. Really it is. I guess in this world things are the way they are and there's not much you can do about them.”
“Hold out your hand,” Jessie ordered.
He made a point to cover his good eye with one hand, and smiling a bit, he held out his other.
When he opened his eyes he looked and was shocked to see what Jessie had given him. It was a coin. Not just any coin.
“It's a...penny...” he managed to say not looking away from it.
“I know there's nothing I can say or do that will help you get over your daughter...but this is my lucky penny. I saved it ever since I was five. It's about the only thing I managed to hold onto through all this. It might sound silly. But I used to think it would bring good luck. And now I want to give it to you, hoping it will bring you...peace. That's silly, isn't it?”
He stood up, clutching onto the penny. She didn't know what he was going to do. “Thank you, Jessie. This means a lot. It really does.”
“I know it's kind of meaningless...money is kind of worthless these days...”
“Jessie, it has meaning to me. You helped me to think about my daughter Penny, and for the first time in a long time, I don't feel so angry thinking about her. Instead all I can think of right now are the good times we had...thank you, this was really sweet of you.”
She closed her eyes, figuring he would try to kiss her again. And he did, just not how she expected it. He took her hand and then kissed it softly, and when she opened her eyes she realized she was also feeling something she hadn't in a long time- she was feeling safe. It was a good feeling.
She stood up to face him, and this time it was her turn to surprise him. She touched the side of his face, the left side, the one bearing the eye patch. He didn't say anything, and she didn't pull away.
And then he pulled her close to him, gently kissing the top of her head, and they both closed their eyes, transported to very different times in their lives.

Such a beautiful update I love that Jessie and Brian are bonding. I love this story, I love seeing the soft side of the Governor. I am not really happy with the mean one, I hope Jessie never has to face that side of him. I love that she gave him her lucky Penny so he could have good luck, and good memories of his daughter. Maybe Jessie will bring out the civil side of Brian. Thank you so much for writing this awesome story for me. I love it so much.

ch 6
The next morning, Jessie woke up and actually found herself smiling when she woke, the first time in more than a month since the attack on her former group.
“Brian?” she called cheerfully, looking forward to his company.
He did not answer, which disturbed her. Maybe last night he was just being polite, maybe she had crossed a line by bringing up Penny, so he wanted to get away from her.
That wouldn't surprise her. Except for her last boyfriend who was killed over a year ago, she found herself time to time wondering if she would ever be able to love another man.
That was when Melinda and Sanda stepped up to the plate. They would always reassure her that anything was possible, that she never knew when love might find her.
Could it be that they were right? Jessie shook her head. Here she was thinking about love when the man she was starting to care for had walked away from her. No use getting her hopes up again.
She sat down on the small chair, trying not to think about anything. It must have worked, for the next thing she knew Brian was standing over her and had touched her arm.
“Jessie...you've been out for a while. I was beginning to worry...are you all right?”
She smiled. “I am now.”
He looked away, and she felt bad. Maybe she was being too forward, maybe he didn't like that. “I'm sorry...sometimes I just say how I feel. I don't mean to do anything wrong...”
“Hey, Jessie. It's all right. It's not you. I just....I'm just a very complicated man...” he sighed.
“Do you want to talk to me about it?”
“No!” Seeing he had hurt her feelings, he softened his voice. “I just...you wouldn't like me very much if you knew...”
“Knew what?”
“Nothing. I really don't want to talk about it.”
“Brian, it's me. I know you don't really know me but I would never hold anything against you. I am starting to trust you and I hope you might be trusting me...”
“Jessie, I know there will come a time when you won't care about me like you do now. I just hope you know...I would never do anything to hurt you.”
“But why...why can't you talk to me? I would never judge you, its not like you're a murderer or anything,” Jessie laughed.
He bit his lip. “No. You're right. Don't worry, everything will be just fine.”
“I won't push you, but please, I hope you know I appreciate you taking me in and how your kindness means so much to me.”
“Jessie, come on. Grab some things. Here---” he handed her a knife. “Take this. You might need it.”
“Where are we going?”
He smiled. “We're going to find your friends.”
She hugged him, and tried to forget about her sense that he was hiding something from her. When he was ready, he would open up to her. Until then, she would continue to try to prove to him that he could trust her, no matter what. Little did she know that she was right, he was hiding something, so dark and mysterious that as long as Brian lived he knew that she could never find out. Never.

Jessie I wrote this because I still want to try a nice story for you. It will get bad, but don't worry, it won't be as bad as last night. Nothing could be! LOL. I hope you are able to continue all your wd stories. they are so good!
