This story is dedicated to Karin, whose Too Hard to say goodbye tribute to Larry inspired this.

As John Ross stared at the mirror, he fumbled with his tie. d**n it, he thought bitterly as he tried in vain to adjust it to how it should be. Closing his eyes in frustration, thoughts of his childhood came back to him, all as if they happened yesterday.
He was just a small boy when he tied his first tie. It was his daddy who taught him, of course. John Ross would never forget the satisfaction of tying it, and more importantly, for making his daddy proud. Even at an early age all he wanted from life was to make his daddy proud. As they had stood in front of that mirror, JR had been patient, supportive and proud when John Ross clumsily completed the task his daddy had done with him.
Not that JR was always patient. He was mean, tough, cruel at times and one tough son of a pregnant dog, but John Ross always knew that his daddy had loved him. Always. To hear stories from his family, John Ross knew that his father had fought to give him a good life. Sometimes lines were crossed, but JR had always believed in his son, and for that, he would always be grateful.
Theirs was a unique albeit complicated relationship. Some times they disagreed, butted heads, but at the end of the day, John Ross knew that JR would always have his son's back. Everything he had done was to try to impress his dad, whether or not he would admit it at the time.
Now it was too late to thank his dad, to tell him how much he'd loved him. Perhaps JR knew, just as John Ross had always known how his father felt about him. But now he would never know, and he would have to live with that regret for the rest of his life.
He opened his eyes and stared at his reflection. Mustering as much courage as he could gather, he proceeded to adjust his tie, and this time it took.
Yes, his father would be proud, indeed.
